Dear Listers, Just a brief note to say thank you to each and everyone who responded to my request re: addresses of newspapers; the response was overwhelming--it will probably take me a month to get through all of them! <grin> I apologize for not thanking all of you more promptly; I hadn't forgotten you--I just haven't been at the computer for any length of time; we've had a recent loss in the family. Thanks again. I certainly appreciate all the help folks have been giving me especially all the little "tips". Some of them have saved me enormous amounts of time. Will let you know if I hit "gold" ! <smile> I'm going to be checking into Montgomery, Greene, Miami and Hancock counties pretty heavily so will keep my eyes and ears open for any info which may be helpful to some of you. I appreciate all of you and, especially those of you who are the 'list-keepers'. Don't know what any of us would do without you! A SPECIAL salute to you!! Sincerely, Barb R.

My grandfather, born in 1869, is not in the birth records, but I found his birth date in a "Birthday Book" his wife kept. This grandmother was a "keeper," so I also inherited a family bible which gave her parents birth dates, etc., from the 1800's. (She didn't label her pictures, though. I had an interesting time figuring them out.) The Hancock OGS has published three Marriage record books that might give you a clue. That could possibly lead you to the cemetery inscription records, also published by the OGS. Relatives are often found on neighboring plots. There are also a couple of good History of Hancock County books that also give very good clues - if you are lucky enough to find your ancestors in them. Also, I have traced family members by noting the family in, for instance, the 1880 census, and then checking to see who's missing in the next census. Census indexes are on line at Family Tree Maker and Ancestry.com. And Heritage Quest has CDs with the IMAGES of the census pages And again, if the person you seek died in Hancock County, the local OGS has an index to obituaries and also the microfilm of the paper they appeared in. You might check with the local OGS and see if they have a researcher who can check some of these places out for you. Findlay-Hancock Public Library has all of this stuff in its genealogy room - including microfilms of all the (Ohio) censuses, birth, death, obituary records. I try to go "home" to Hancock County every year and spend a lot of time in that library. They also have LDS records there. Check out the Hancock OGS website at: <http://www.rootsweb.com/~ohhccogs/> Actually, I noted as I got this address that they have volunteers to check out the obits for you. Back in the spring, 1996 Hancock Heritage, there was a page from the program for the 1873 graduation at Union High School in Findlay. On the list of grads was William T. PLATT, the oldest son of George PLATT & Eva FAULK. How long was Union HS in existence, and when did it become Findlay HS? Are there other records from later Union HS years? I thought I asked in the library once, but maybe I asked about old Findlay HS, not Union HS. Thanks for any help. Ann Brickner
David, I located two Elizabeth POWELL who married: One to Moses MYERS on Feb. 1, 1849 and the other to John KRAFT Jr., on Aug. 27, 1857. This is from the only "Marriage Records of Hancock Co., OH 1828-1864," that I have. Hope it helps. Linda Surnames: WICKHAM, DAY, JONES, FOSS
Hi, all - F.Y.I. - I've indexed the 1912 Centennial Programme of Findlay and Hancock County. This is a 96 page document that contains over 1000 names of Hancock County citizens from 1812-1912. I am looking for a birth record of a John Yerington said to have been born in 1820 in Findly , Hancock, Ohio. I do not know his parents names, or the names of any siblings.
DAvid, If she was married in Hancock County, perhaps someone would be so kind as to look for the marriage record for you. Just a thought. David, You might try looking for the person's obit if you have date of death. Sometimes the obits list date of birth. Just a suggestion. The Findlay Library has an Obit database on there computers but unfortunatley it was a victim of the dreaded "Love Bug" and wiped everything out. (**Note= it is in their computer system, not online, but there computers are online) So they have to re-enter the whole database. I was told it could take weeks. But they have a file in book form, but there are several volumes and it isn't as updated. Michelle +Publicity Chairperson for the Newcomers' Club of Findlay, Ohio+ **Enumerator for the U. S. I noticed that the Probate Court only carries Birth (and Death) records as early as 1867. Where would I go to find the recorded birth of someone born in Hancock County in the year 1854? I have found the person in the 1860 & 1880 Censuses but these do not give a full birth date. And in the 1900-1920 Censuses I do not know what her married is so I could not find her there (maybe Elizabeth Powell, married to William Powell). -- David R. For all of you that are within driving distance of Findlay, there is going to be a seminar at the Community Room of the Findlay Hancock Co. Library on June 13 from 1pm to 4pm. It is titled "Using Genealogical and Local History Collections for Family Research" and it is being given by Steve Charter who is the Archivist at BGSU. If you have never heard Steve Charter speak, you are in for a treat. He is very interesting and it would certainly be worth your time to come. It is free but you need to make reservations by calling the library at 419 422-1737 and ask for Dianne Wood. Or, you can email her at wooddi@oplin.lib.oh.us. Like I said, there is no charge for the seminar but they are only taking reservations for 40 people and there are several already on the list. You will need to contact Dianne as soon as possible to make your reservation. Hope to see you there. Vicky Stozich President Hancock Co. Chapter OGS

Looking for other WICKHAM descendants to share family information with. John C. and Anna B. (MILLER) WICKHAM lived in Blanchard Twp., Hancock Co., OH with their 12 children approximately in 1816 until his death in 1836. It would be nice to find other descendants into this family to further everyone's research :) Linda
Does anyone know of links for newspapers? I thought I had put it in my files, but must have deleted 'cause I sure can't find it!! <grin> I am particularly interested in newspapers in and around Dayton, Ohio and Brookville, Ohio. Would appreciate the information. Thanks and wishes for a safe and restful holiday. Barb R.
Hi, Listers! Wanted to thank each and every one who responded to my request re: Dick/Dickson names. Couldn't make a LOT of matches, but have filed all info for future use. Still have that proverbial brick wall, but WAS able to locate info on one of the sons of Philip & Ida: also was able to confirm that the Edward Dick I have was in fact a brother to Philip. Thank you again, and please remember me if these names should 'pop up' among your own searches. If there is anything I can help with, please feel free to ask. As I said, I am REALLY new at this, but am willing to do what I can. Thank you once again...God bless.... Barb R.

While inquiring about MINNA FETZER's grave site in Maple Grove I was informed that the grave and several grave adjacent were owned by an ANTHONY PASSOLD. My family tree contains an ELIZABETH PASSOLE which could be a misspelling of PASSOLD. Elizabeth married a Peter FETZER and I was wondering if this Minna could have been a child of Liz and Peter. Minna (or Minnia) died in 1874. A couple of the graves are occupied by people with the HORNING surname. Is there anyone researching the PASSOLD family name? -- David R. A geneal-angel in Hancock Co has today found my 2ggrandmother Maryann Ewing who married HENRY Francis "Frank" BROWN as his first wife on 17 DEC 1850 in Ashland Co., OH. We do not know who Frank Brown's parents were. Maryann EWING is the daugh of William EWING b. 16 April 1793 in Lebanan, PA and died McComb, Hancock OH in 1873. He ( according to IGI) is the son of William EWING and Anna Margaret LENZ. I have no further info on them? Maryann's mother ( IGI) was Christianna SHUPP b. 16 June 1791 as recorded in the records of Shoops Reformed Church, Harrisburg, Dauphin Co., PA. Christianna d. in Hancock Co., OH in 1859. Her parents ( in the record) were Christopher SHUPP and a Rosina. No further info available. Do any of you have these people in your databases? Thank you in advance for your time in this search. Margaret Shank ( Arvada, CO)
Though I have searched the cemetery records on-line for Beaverdam and have talked to Mark TWICe, I can't find the gravesites of James and Isabelle GRANT and their son, Orville who died in 1898. James died in 1914 and Isabelle in 1927. Are there any records available which would identify UNMARKED grave sites? From James and Isabelle's death certs I have learned that the undertaker was a JOHN D. REUSHLER with an undertaker's license of 891. I do not know if this man was in Hancock or Allen Co. All three obits indicate ( as do James and Isabelle's death certs) that they were buried in Beaverdam: James was buried on July 30th 1914 and Isabelle on January 6, 1927. Can anyone suggest what I might try next? Pewrhaps the Boy Scouts will walk those Beaverdam Cemeteries on Memorial Day to place flags... should I ask them to look? As far as I know, James DID NOT fight in the Civil War. thank you all in advance for any help in this matter. Margaret Shank ( Arvada, CO)
