    2. How did the name John/Jonathon transform into Jno? I have several ancestors who were listed at times on census records as "Jno." and have wondered what it meant and then why it was not just written as John. As yet, i have only seen it with german ancestors. Is it possible it derived from a german word?

    3. The German name would be Johann, so that doesn't make any more sense than Jno. for John or Jonathan, does it? I have seen it for nationalities other than German. 3. Hello from Germany, the German equivalent for John is Johann. Jonathan has exact the same spelling but a different intonation! Therefore I don't believe Jno is derived from German.
