Hi Jacqi, Welcome to Cincinnati (so to speak). I'll try to give you a run-down on Cincinnati research from my experience to give you a general idea, but hopefully others who know more or better or who have access to resources can answer you more specifically (I'm in New England and far from any library with any sort of collection of use to me). I'm cutting and pasting parts of this from old posts, so if it sounds disjointed and/or repetitious, I apologize. You are unlikely to find birth and death records for that time period for two reasons: one, the state of Ohio didn't require them until sometime around 1908, although there were some earlier ones; and two, because the courthouse in Cincinnati was burned down in 1884 and most records were destroyed (although efforts have been made to compile "restored" records). Your best bet is church records if you can locate the church. Some people on this list may have access to published baptismal records. Or if you can narrow down the church, the LDS has microfilmed a lot of church records-- Protestant for the most part. For Catholic records you pretty much have to work through the Archdiocese archives-- they'll do the search for a minimum fee, I think of $25.00. http://www2.eos.net/dajend/catholic.html http://www.catholiccincinnati.org/archives/ Here are some useful sites you might want to look at. Be sure to check out the links and look into the nooks and crannies of the sites: Cemeteries: A general Hamilton county cemetery web site: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ohhamilt/cemeteries1.htm There are some excellent on-line cemetery records, but many are not yet on-line. If you can narrow down the most likely cemeteries by location and/or religion, someone here might be able to check copies of published records for you or even provide the contact info for the cemetery. In any case be sure to check out these 2 sites which do have on-line records: http://www.springgrove.org/springgrove/genealogy_query.asp for Spring Grove Cemetery, which is a very large (and beautiful) cemetery founded in the mid-1800s. They have images of the actual records from burials on-line and computer records for those from around 1990 on. http://www.rootsweb.com/~ohhamcem/cemlist.html Listings for Wesleyan Cemetery, which is maintained by a member of this list. There may be others, but these are the 2 I'm aware of. There is a general site for Catholic cemeteries, but their records are not on-line: http://www.cccsohio.org/Default.htm A couple more sites which have good info on Cincinnati genealogy: http://www.jungclas.com/gensite/hamilton/hamresou/ (includes a link to where particular published or filmed cemetery records and church records may be located. Plus more.) and http://members.aol.com/ogshc/ogshcweb.htm This is the local genealogy society's site with more links. They put out a very informative book on the how's and where's etc. of research in Hamilton County, very reasonably priced-- if you think you'll be doing much research in the area, it might be worth buying a copy. There are people on the list with access to city directories for Cincinnati which might give the location of your people and of possibly near-by churches in your time frame. The 1890 directory is available free on-line at http://members.aol.com/cintigenealogy/1890citydirectory/ As I said, Ohio did not require death certificates until 1908 (although there may be other instances of earlier versions). There is more information about the "history" of death certificates in Ohio on the Ohio Historical Society site: http://www.ohiohistory.org/resource/archlib/refemail.html#death The OHS can send you a copy of the certificate for a reasonable fee if you have the date-- for details see the site. They do have an on-line index for 1913-1937 (more years are in the works). For deaths occurring before 1908 (or even after, why not?), your best bet is to find obituaries/death notices which might provide the name of their church/minister or the cemetery. Church records can be a gold mine in Cincinnati if you can locate the one(s) your ancestors belonged to. The public library-- http://www.cincinnatilibrary.org/ -- has a partial on-line index to local newspapers, including obituaries. They also charge a small fee to copy the obits and send them to you. The catch is you need the date of death, at least to within a few days-- if it's not in their newspaper index you need to find the date some other way. I haven't used this service for a couple of years so ask on the list and someone who has done it more recently can give you up-to-date information, or check the list archives. The Little Miami Publishing Company has published a bunch of local history books, including transcribed church and cemetery records. Worth looking for in libraries or perhaps someone on the list can do lookups if you have a specific reference: http://littlemiamibooks.com/ Heritage books also publishes some (heritagebooks.com) Sorry this is so long. Hope it helps. DEMPSEY and Margaret TULLY Dempsey in Chicago, with no success...until someone found them for me in the Hamilton Co 1900 census. Does anyone on this list have access to birth and/or marriage data for Cincinnati in that time period? The census shows their daughter, Margaret (or Rita) born Aug 1891 in OH, and I am wondering if that would be in Cincinnati or elsewhere. Also, news to me from the census, Michael's niece Adeline DAVIDSON, b 1893 in OH, was living with them. It appears Adeline may have been orphaned. In later info I have, she is called "daughter" of Michael and Margaret, not niece. Does anyone have access to death/obit info that would show her parents' names? Thanks in advance for any help, suggestions, or referral to online resources for Ohio/Hamilton (a new area for me to research). Jacqi -- No virus found in this outgoing message.
