Ok, Margaret, good idea! Ellen "Nellie" RYAN: Her middle initial shows up many years later as "M". There's a possibility that her given name was Mary Ellen RYAN, as a potential family match in 1870 Illinois is indicating. (Her firstborn was named Mary E, also) Nellie was born in June of 1860, in Ohio, according to census records. Nellie's parents: Listed on her death certificate as Lawrence RYAN and Mary MCCLOUD, both of Ireland. William MARTIN: Never had a middle initial or name turn up. No birth month listed on anything, but 1856 is listed for year on the 1900 census in NYC, and his birthplace has always been listed as England. William's parents: Listed on his death certificate as William and Mary MARTIN, both born in England. Nellie & William's marriage was at St. Xavier's on Sycamore St, on 3 Nov 1880. No ages or parents names are listed on it. Record was signed by W. Boex, S.J., with Witnesses Thomas CAHILL and Maria QUINN. (I should also add that I've been in contact with St. Xavier's, and they have no records on William or Nellie prior to the marriage) Nellie & William's firstborn was born 4 Sept 1881 in New York City, so they relocated between the marriage in November 1880 and the birth in Sept 1881. So, basically what I have on these people starts in 1880 and I have a lot of stuff moving forward from there. I do have 1 photograph of Nellie & William, along with another couple that are unknown. I'd be happy to post it here, but I'm not sure if it's allowed in this forum. Would love to know the identity of the other couple. It was a tintype photo that was in with Nellie's papers dating back to the 1880's. I was wondering if it might have been taken before they left Cincinnati for New York. Thanks you guys for all your help with this, it's much appreciated. Also, Dennis Ryan is in the 1860 census for Cincinnati. How about posting the names you have for her parents and the witnesses on her marriage? It might help in breaking down the brickwall. The witnesses could be neighbors or family members.
