Hi folks, I could use some help from some of you that have experience with records at the Hamilton County Court. I wrote to them on the 15th of February, and already heard back from them today. However, the results were not what I'd hoped for. I have a marriage certificate for my ggrandparents, William MARTIN and Ellen "Nellie" RYAN. They were married at St. Xavier's on 3 NOV 1880. The only information provided on the marriage certificate was the names of the couple and names of the witnesses. As most of you know, I've been at a dead end with this for close to a year, so decided to write to Hamilton County to see if I could get a copy of the marriage license/application, etc. The court request came back: "I have searched the years 1863-1884 and found no record for the request you have given us." I don't understand how that can be. I gave them the exact date of the marriage. I know when Ann B. helped me with this, she told me that it was from restored records. Is it the court records I'm looking for that were destroyed? I'm bummed out in a major way. I need desperately to verify Nellie's parents names, as I'm having doubts about the information on her death certificate. I don't know where else to turn to try and get that information, as I have absolutely nothing on her prior to her census information a few months prior to the marriage. Nellie worked for the Chas Taft family, and I wrote to them some time ago to see if they had anything, and they were unable to help. Any thoughts, suggestions, shoulders to cry on? Thanks, Lori
Hi Lori, Is this Hamilton County Court the same as the Hamilton County Probate Court? If not, you might try calling the Probate Court at 513-946-3551. They have Marriage Index/Records from 1817 thru the Present. For certified copies, it is $2.00 and uncertified, it is 50 cents. Another suggestion would be to write or call the Hamilton County Library for a newspaper announcement on their marriage. I have gotten more information on my family from newspaper articles than from any other source. Best wishes in your search and don't give up. Lori, If you have a marriage certificate from the church, you probably have more info than you would get from the courts. It's true a good number of records were lost in courthouse fires. But there is also the problem of information required on marriage records at that time.....very little. Back then you didn't get ages or birthdates but that he was at least 21 and she was at least 18. Parents of either was not asked for nor any witnesses. You got the names of the couple, the date of the marriage and who performed the service. You're lucky to have what you do, but unfortunately it seems that's the best you are going to do. I'm actually in the same spot you are. My great grandparents were married May 10, 1870. I was able to get that from an index of restored marriage records. Their's was one lost in one of the fires. My next step will be to contact the Archdioceses to research their archives for the church record. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but hopefully you have a better understanding. If still needed, I can offer the shoulder to cry on, and a box of tissues. Sorry to tell Lori and Bob but I got the same from the church records. I have the marriage cert for my ancestors, wrote the church where they were married St. Peter in Chains and they sent a copy of the sheet that lists their names and the priest who married them. That was all. I have a brick wall there also trying to find their parents.
