    1. [OHHAMILT] Early German schools in Cincinnati
    2. Phyllis Garratt
    3. I am researching early (prior to 1840) German schools in Cincinnati. I have a letter that states that my great grandfather Jacob Gessert arrived in Cincinnati at the age of 5 in September 1836 on an Ohio Steamer. "He first attended the so-called German Emigrant School of which the first teachers were Mr. Wise and Mr. Salomon. Soon the German-English Free School was established, of which Mr. Joseph A. Hermann was the first teacher. In 1839, a Mr. Henry Poppelman became his teacher." I have contacted Don Heinrich Tolzmann (indirectly through one of his good friends) and I have spoken with Blegen Library in Cincinnati as well as the Cincinnati Historical Society. No one seems to know anything about these schools. I did find this little bit online: ".Philipp Hauser, and . Julius Weyse (or Weise), who taught from 1836 to 1839 at a school for German emigrant children sponsored by the Presbyterian Lane Seminary." Has anyone else run across information about the German Emigrant (Immigrant) School? Phyllis
