    1. Re: [OHHAMILT] Steamboats, etc.
    2. This topic tweaked my interest. Family legend has it that my gg-father Aaron Brown who arrived in Hamilton Co in 1805 at age 7 yr was apprenticed to a blacksmith at age 14, circa 1812. Prior to becoming a farmer/blacksmith, about 1820, in the Glendale area he is said to have worked on the first steamboat built in Cincinnati , and the iron bands used on the water pipes for the first water distribution system for the town. Are there records as to the name and date of the first steamboat, and a date for the first water system? CRJ In a message dated 6/7/2008 7:09:05 P.M. Eastern Daylight Time, [email protected] rites: Hi; I did quite a bit of searching several years ago when I found my great-great grandfather's obituary which stated he was "the well known steamboat man". Apparently he was not well known enough to have been documented anywhere! But in the process, I ran across some very interesting resources. Look for books about Ohio River and Inland rivers steamboats by Frederick WAY. Many names and boats are mentioned, although most of the people were ship's captains, not just crew. If you are in Cincinnati - volumes should be in the main library. Also, there is an organization which published an extremely detailed journal, probably quarterly. I believe the name of the society is "Sons and Daughters of Riverboat Pioneers" and is located in Marietta, Ohio. Those publications are also full of details, including family names and information. Turned out my ancestor was apparently a watchman on the boats, most likely on the Kentucky side of the Ohio, as he was found in both Newport and Covington late in life. So, good luck on your search -- and if you run across Hiram POTTS, I'd appreciate the info! Ann Bergelt Florida **************Get trade secrets for amazing burgers. 3. I believe that the Cincinnati main library has an entire section on Riverboat history. You might try there. Phyllis

    3. One of my ancestors, Henry Seaman, was a riverboat pilot. I have never been able to find a single bit of information on this.
