This is a real roadblock for me. I can't seem to find Charles W. Smith anywhere. He married my grandmother Hattie Lee Davis in 1892 in Cincinnati, they had a child in 1894. In the 1900 census Hattie is a servant in a home in Covington and I can't find Charles or their son. By 1908 Hattie remarries George Usborne. On her marriage record she states that she is widowed. In the 1900 census she states that she is married. So sometime between 1900 and 1908 Charles has died. I sent to the University of Cincinnati Library for a list of Charles Smiths that died in those years. There was one that I thought would have been a good possibility. Says he died in 1905. He was an elevator man and had an accidental fall from an elevator shaft. Says he lived at Sycamore between 8 & 7 St. Maybe you can shed some light on this for me. I don't know what else to do. I have been searching for 12 years with no luck. Thanks Rose ************** Ideas to please picky eaters. Watch video on AOL Living. Seems like a fall from an elevator shaft would have made the Cincinnati newspapers. And it sounds like you have the date this particular Charles Smith died. Have you tried the Newsdex? The index is not complete by any means but it may have something. Not sure how far back it goes though. Can someone help here? Or better yet, requested a lookup from the Cincinnati library for any news article on the accident? In the 1896 Cincinnati City Directory there are several Hattie Smiths, but no Charles W. Smith. One of the Hattie's is a chambermaid who lived at 1634 Hewitt. But she is not listed as a widow. Only one Hattie is listed as a widow; but widow of a Thomas Smith. And none of the 50 or so Charles Smiths listed lived at that address. By the way, there are 7 Charles W. Smiths listed. Again, wives are not listed with their husbands. Have you checked in Covington, KY? You say you found her in the 1900 census as a servant in a home in Covington in 1900. Are you sure it is her?
