    3. Hello List, Recent discussions of family photographs lead me to wonder if anyone can give me some suggestions on the ones I have. I was given old, formal portraits of a couple ancestors. The portraits are HUGE/ GIGANTIC and in old frames. Since I don't want to display these portraits is there anything that I can do with them? Is there some place that could handle scanning very large photos and then I could reduce them to a manageable size? And does anyone have suggestions on how they should be stored. I won't be able to just throw them out. Thanks in advance to all suggestions. Penny Fairfield, OH

    3. An excellent source of information and ideas regarding old photos is on the Rootsweb Vintage Photos mail list ([email protected]). Many well qualified professionals and other helpful individuals offer great suggestions. I have taken photos of larger photos and then made smaller copies that way for myself. This doesn't work well if the photos are covered by the glass. 3. Penny et al, I photgraphed my great grandparents' photo portraits (John and Anna Broxterman) that were each 24 by 32 inches, in elaborate frames at my elderly cousin Rosemary Broxterman's family home on West Eighth St. in Price Hill, Cincinnati. Rosemary allowed me to do that in her place but would not allow them outside for me to copy and return. I used a good 35 mm camera wirth adjustable focal length and a flash, set the portrait of each, in turn, upright on the floor in an interior door opening to avoid sunlight and took the photo (several shots each) from a slight angle to avoid flash bloom on the glass of the portrait. I selected the best of the developed photos and scanned them into my family history and as separate 5 by 7's. She did start to trust me more after this on-my-knees effort by me, a 65 year old male relative and lent me other, smaller snapshot photos of our ancestors to copy and return. If I had not gone to this trouble my chances of getting the portaits and the pics later would have been lost. Rosemary died a few months later. Her son then had her home cleaned out and all such pictures taken to the dump!! Bob Niehaus

    3. IMPORTANT TO INCLUDE DISPOSITION OF FAMILY PHOTOS & GENEALOGICAL RECORDS IN YOUR WILL Bob's message below illustrates the importance of including information in your will, or as a codicil, to name a person or place to receive your treasured family photos and genealogical records. If you have family bibles, quilts, or other items, include them in the document. It is heartbreaking to read that Bob's family photos were destroyed.
