    3. OK so here it goes as I am thinking out loud and typing: My GG Grandfather looks like he might have lead a double life. I found a death cert on the familysearch website. On the cert his name is Gustave M Arnold. His parents are Wendelin Arnold and Elizabeth Rentz. It states his wife is Mary M Arnold (dont know her maiden name). It states he was a cafe operator. With that said, I was talking with my grandma and she remebers my grandpa talking about his grandparents, August and Jenny. My grandma also told me my grandpa took her to the cafe when they starting dating in the 50s. August and Jenny had my G Grandfather Alfred Arnold Sr, and my grandpa was Alfred Arnold Jr. I have no death cert for this August. Looking at the census that are avaiable through ancestry.com I see Gustave with Mary and I see August with Jenny, both with kids. I am so confused. Is there someone that can help me possibly disprove this? Any help and suggestions is GREATLY APPRECIATED! 3. Do the two families have children with the same names and similar ages? (Meaning born around the same time). Could the wife's name be Mary Jenny or Jenny Mary? German naming practices had them using both. More commonly went by the middle name. August and Gustave have sometimes been used interchangeably. I have an ancestor who went by Gus, short for Gustave. But I've seen his name as August too. And if the record was transcribed from Latin, Augustus or Augustinus was used for Gus. If the census taker was trying to put down the legal form of the name, not what the person went by, that could account for the different names. Hope this helped.
