Knowing that a number of German immigrants in the Cinti area originated from the Alfhausen, Germany (Osnabruck) area, I wonder if anyone has access to the St. Johann Church records? I found this online. http://www.sjsmid.nl/Overledenen_1812-1926.htm Lori
Lori, thanks. My grandfather was born in Alfhausen. A cousin (still there--in Damme) scanned all of my ancestors records on a portable scanner and so we have been able to trace the family back to 1800. Their records go back farther than that, but our line stops (begins?) there. They all (both Protestant and Catholic lines) settled mainly in Cincinnati and the name Varnau (as it was contracted in the US) still exists there. Lori, My ancestor Henry Wischer/Wisker came to Cincinnati in 1843 from Alfhausen. Several years ago I ordered the set of index & transcription books & cd's with the birth/death/marriage images of St. Johann's records from Siegfried Smid. I didn't realize that he had put the indexes online! Everything I ordered cost over $200 cash. It looks like he has set it all up now on a single CD for 35 Euro?? For more information, his website is here: http://www.sjsmid.nl/ If you go to the English page you will find links to indexes for all of the records! I would be willing to do some "limited" checking. One really needs to have the CD's to do a complete study of connecting surnames. Meanwhile, I've spent every spare minute the past 2 weeks painting. The carpet will get layed tomorrow morning & then I will begin moving my "office" from a basement room to the room upstairs :-) I've tons of binders, books & files to move, not to mention the desk, shelving units, file cabinets & computer equip. I've no idea how long it will take..................
