I would suggest contacting Dayton, OH library to see if they can find an obituary for this Helen Spettel. Since you have her death date, they should be able to search the newspapers. From what I've read online, you should be able to make the request via email or phone. (I know that for Cincinnati/Hamilton Co., the library can and will email you the obit.) If you can obtain this Helen's obit, you might be able to determine one way or the other if she was your Ralph's wife. And with any luck, if she was, perhaps or obit will mention when hubbie died, or perhaps list survivors.
