    2. I know most of you are annoyed with the online Probate Court Records but I am grateful for the information that they made available. I am pretty sure I have found a Daniel Gallagher being appointed guardian to my grandmother. Alice Gallagher, 5 years old. I believe the Michael and Margaret Gallagher buried in 1873 at St. Joes are her parents. I knew that if this was true Alice should show up somewhere as an orphan and there she was. This is a great piece of the puzzle. The other surprise was that she had a 3 year old sister. I may even have relatives in Cinci. Thanks to this website for telling us about the records going online. Joanne

    3. Apparently these records have not been transcribed. At Ancestry.com and other online databases, someone (many hundreds of people) have been employed to read the records and type the names into a database that links to images. In the Hamilton Co. records only images are available, not words that we can search. It means we have to look at the images just as we would do in a book. It's more difficult on the computer, though, because we can't flip through the whole thing to get an idea of what we are looking at. That's how I figure it, anyway. 3. All of the records on ProbateCt.org are likely still in their original form, or scanned PDFs. This means you are looking at an image. When you are using Ancestry or the Family History Library sites, what you are actually searching is a digital record that someone has created from that original record. That is why the FHL (LDS) site is always asking for volunteers, and that is why Ancestry.com is a paid subscription site. It takes a lot of manpower and hours to do all that transcribing. Since they've provided all the records free, I imagine that the courthouse couldn't justify hiring the people it would require to enable a search engine to be of use on the site. Maybe it will be part of their efforts in the future. Or maybe the local genealogical society volunteers could help too. I am reading a lot of frustration from everybody about these records. I know it is frustrating to think we might have finally had a new chance of finding more about our ancestors, only to still run into dead ends. But try to keep in mind that it is still a new thing for a courthouse to provide these records to the public free of charge, and easily available without requiring travel. My suggestion would be to just be patient with digging through the records. You never know what you might stumble upon as you go. Best of luck, Amy On Thu, Jan 7, 2010 at 1:54 PM, <harand8479@aol.com> wrote: > > Could someone on the list who knows a lot about computer programming and > search engines, please tell us why the county court could not list the > records to INCLUDE a name search. > > how is it that Ancestry, LDS site, Rootsweb, and on and > on..............search by name and the probate court site cannot. > > is it not possible with the records they have, or is it a monetary thing. > > no long detailed technical explanation required..........just any ideas of > why. > > thanks..............Helen in Florida > > > > > > > > > To contact the List Administrator, send an email to: Kaesemein@aol.com > > Did you miss a message? 2. I am extremely disgusted that they haven't done a better job with this. We've been waiting for several years for these records. I don't know who did the programming and setup but it seems to me to have been done by someone who doesn't know what they're doing. I've only found 2 marriage records and the remainder of my lookups have come back with an "Invalid Volume" notice. And these aren't any records that were destroyed by a fire.....they are from 1930 to the most recent records available at the site. As far as I'm concerned the site is useless as it is. 2. I have a question that might clear up a few issues for everyone when answered. These records are for Hamilton County. Obviously, Cincinnati is within Hamilton County. I know that birth records are handled differently for those that live in Cincinnati city limits and those that live in Hamilton County outside of Cincinnati. You need to go to different locations to request the birth records. Were the wills, marriages, etc also recorded in two different places - for those that live in Hamilton County outside of Cincinnati and those that live in Cincinnati city limits? I have found wills/estates for family that are within the city of Cincinnati on the website but wanted to make sure that there was not a distinction as with birth records when starting to look at other databases on the site. 3. It is kinda frustrating using their site. The lower number books I try using A, then B, then C-before the volume number. Sometimes I come up with a winner that way. I also try various spellings of the last name. The original books were just about as confusing. I did have the opportunity to go through them before they started digitally scanning them. Had to check through many indexes just to get the book/page number. Phyllis - as best I can tell from the naturalization page, they just have the indexes online. the indexes reference microfilms that you can call the courthouse to see; however I think naturalization was one of the types of files that were lost in the fires. 3. It's widely known and mourned here locally that there were several fires at the courthouse, resulting in the loss of countless records. Naturalization, marriage, birth, death etc. It's very unfortunate and a terrible loss. But true. To Carol: My last message didn't exclude any of those instances. My point was and remains, that the actual certificates just don't exist for the most part, and that would probably explain why the online records are returning invalid links to Tom. My guess is that this is why the county was so easily able to put the records online; simply because so many of them were destroyed and all that is left is reconstructions, indexes, and the like. It's really disappointing, to say the least.
