    1. [OHHAMILT] naturalization possibilities
    2. J. A.
    3. I am looking for the naturalization record of my gg grandfather, (Johann) Heinrich Schulze  and his brother, Wilhelm Heinrich Dietrich Schulte or Schulze. My gg grandfather came to America about 1837 and lived in Cincinnati until just before 1850.He also lived in Indiana for 7 years and Missouri from 1860 until he died in 1909. How likely is it that he was naturalized while he lived in Cincinnati, Ohio?Where do I find the records? Thank you.JJ

    3. Over the weekend we visited the Cincinnati Police Museum which is very interesting. While there I bought a packet of postcards some of which have names of particular patrolmen. If there is anyone who is researching these men, I would be glad to scan them and send them to you. Here are the names on the different men: -John "Pop" Toney, Olin Wilson -Cincinnati Police Colts Baseball Team circa 1908: -George Egloff, A.C. Brendamour (others aren't named) -William C. 3. Hello again, Well, you know the Reverend's name and you know the address, so this should be really helpful. I would visit the city directories for around the time she passed away and look up the pastor, this will give the church name and you can verify the church address. Then, follow the church through time using the city directories. Pull out every third year and look up the church section that is usually in the back of the directory. You can use the address to follow the name of the church. If it's a different denomonation (sometimes churches move and other churches buy the property) then look for the same reverend or a church of the same name, etc. I've had to do this before. Hopefully it will lead you to what the church reventually was called and you can contact the Presbytery to find out where the records are and whether you can access them. I do not have any experience with the Presbyterian church since all of my ancestors were Catholic, Lutheran or Evangelical Protestant. I wish I could tell you what their policy is. The Genealogy and Local History Department I mentioned will have the city directories you can look through. They also have several books on the history of Presbyterianism in Cincinnati that may tell you the history of the Associate Reformed Church and it's relation to the other Presbyterian Churches. They do have some of the Presbyterian Church records on microfilm, but I'm unsure about whether they have any for Northern Kentucky. Good luck! 3. Hello, you say you have the city directory information, what part of town did Martha Giffen Lamont live in? Here is one Associate Reformed congregation that joined the United Presbyterians (now called Presbyterian Church USA) - http://www.sycamorechurch.org/aboutSPC.htm. You could also contact the Presbytery of Cincinnati, they might have an idea of what churches were or are in the area she and her family lived in, here is there website: http://www.presbyteryofcincinnati.org/About/default.htm. Are you going to visit the Genealogy and Local History Department at the Main Branch of the Public Library while in Cincinnati? They have very good resources. Good luck on your research! 3. She actually lived in Newport. It was a second marriage for both of them. If Hugh is who I think he is, she is the mother of one of his daughters-in-law. They married in Cincinnati. I guess that makes her her daughter's step-mother-in-law? Hugh Lamont and Margaret MacNeillage married in Campbelltown, Argyll, Scotland and had a number of children. Three sons came to Cincinnati. James (age 21) came first in 1832 on the same ship with a William Anderson. Both were tailors. They established Lamont and Anderson Merchant Tailors. Hugh (52), David (22), Margaret (Dixon) Lamont, David's wife (21), and Roger (18) came in 1837. All were listed as tailors. Martha (Giffen) Dickson (40) also a tailor came in 1839. Both the ship record and the 1850 census give Hugh a later birth date than I have so I may have the wrong parents for him. Here is Martha's obituary: Died, July 19th, 1851, at the family residence, Newport, Kentucky, in the 60th year of her age, Martha, consort of Mr. Hugh Lamont, and mother of the Rev. Thomas Dickson, of the United Presbyterian Church, Caledon, C. W. The deceased was the daughter of Mr. James Giffen, a ruling elder of the United Presbyterian Church, Southend Kintyre. After leaving her father's house, she resided in Campbellton, and was a member of the United Presbyterian Church there, under the pastoral care of the Rev. James Boyd. In the summer of 1839, she emigrated to this country, and during her residence in this city and Newport, she has been a member of the Associate Reformed Church. She loved God's house, and when health permitted, she was sure to be there. Her disease, which was Chronic Inflammation of the stomach, baffled medical skill. Her sufferings were long and severe, but she bore them with much patience, and Christian resignation. God made her bed for her in sickness. Her afflictions were sanctified, and they have been to her better than a thousand years of sinful mirth. She was a dutiful wife, a fond and most exemplary mother, and by her kindness, amiability and piety, she made many warmly attached friends. She lived in the faith and hope of the Gospel, and died longing to be with her Saviour in glory. She died in the Lord—she rests from her labors, and her works follow her. She was lovely in life, but more so in death. She trusted to the last in the merit of the Savior, and her end was peace. Her Pastor, the Rev. James Prestley, improved the event, from the following words, which she repeated a short time before her decease,—" Into thine hand, I commit my spirit; thou hast redeemed me, O, Lord God of truth," Ps. 31: 5. She was followed to the place of interment by a numerous and respectable concourse of sympathizing fellow-citizens and Christian friends. Her relatives feel and lament her loss, but they rejoice that they are not called to sorrow as those who have no hope. She has often sown her seed in weeping, but she is now reaping the rich harvest of a mother's toil. Her children arise and call her blessed, and they hope yet to greet her where hope is swallowed up in fruition, and prayer in praise, Asleep in Jesus! 0 how sweet To be for such a slumber meet! With holy confidence to sing That death has lost his venom'd sting. Asleep in Jesus ! Oh for me May such a blissful refuge be ! Securely shall my ashes lie, Waiting the summons from on high. T. D. Did it merge with one of the current Presbyterian churches in Cincinnati? I'm hoping to find information about other Lamonts in Cincinnati around that time. Particularly her husband, Hugh Lamont and his sons (I think) Roger and James. I have the city directory records. 3. St. Meinrad's is a Benedictine monastery, college and school of theology. Ferdinand is the location of one of the largest congregations of Benedictine nuns in the U.S. I suggest that Mr. Bauer write to the Monastery of the Immaculate Conception, 802 E. 10th St., Ferdinand IN and ask if they have any information about his GG aunt. I have found that most religious communities are very happy to help in one's search for relatives. There is more information about the Ferdinand Benedictines at www.thedome.org - including a short history of the establishment of the monastery which traces its history back to the Benedictine sisters in St. Mary's PA as well as Erie PA. 2. Mary; Sometimes the Ancestry.com transcriptions are not right on target, so I went to HeritageQuest to look for Agnes Williams and the family she was living with in 1860. Although it does appear the census taker wrote "Sasey" or something similar to that, I'm thinking perhaps it should have been "CASEY" instead. The family in question was actually living at the same address as a (clearly written) John Casey. Both John and James were coopers and were born in Ireland. Try looking in 1870 for Casey instead. 3. Yes, the Mill Creek is a pretty major waterway. There is a large impoundment lake with a major dam in Winton Woods back upstream some miles and but if flooding is major they have to eventually release water to flow south to the Ohio River. They try to minimize this flow. At the junction with the Ohio there is the very large Mill Creek Barrier Dam. Inside is a long row of immense pumps. Their function is to pump water out of the Mill Creek and raise it to flow into the Ohio River. This can allow the Mill Creek to cause some reduced flooding of low lands while the Ohio River can be at a much higher level. That Mill Creek valley is all pretty low land. It is also a wide valley so a lot of property is involved. Some is marsh land and some is rail yards that have been backfilled in the distant past. Westwood Avenue itself is not all that far above the mean water level of the Ohio River. After the big flood in '37 the barrier dam was completed in '48 and major flooding in the Mill Creek valley has been much less severe. The infield at the old Reds Stadium on the north bank of the Ohio River WAS below flood level and there are pictures of the stadium surrounded by flood water. There are major pumps there I understand. The infield is probably pretty soggy (and not used) but it is not really flooded. Jean E Schaefer Aunt Lizzie's Trunk wrote: Ann, Mill Creek goes right through there. You can see it on online maps. Mill Creek would flood very easily, I believe. 3. It IS fairly close to the river. And is low ground. Not uncommon to have it flooded On Mar 18, 2010, at 10:32 AM, AnnBergelt@aol.com wrote: > Those are really great photos. 3. Ann, Mill Creek goes right through there. You can see it on online maps. Mill Creek would flood very easily, I believe.
