    2. I would check at St. Mary's or St. John's north of Cincinnati (St. Bernard area). A good numbr of my German ancestors from the mid to late 1800's are buried there. You might be able to get a copy of the microfilm for these cemeteries from FHC. Also you might try sending a letter to St. Mary's with a donation. They can be helpful but I don't think they answer too many questions over the phone. Karen

    3. The Archives in Cincinnati Archdiocesis have the old Catholic baptismal records. You would have to contact them. Esp. since you have the church and year of birth. That would help. The only Catholic cemeteries with online indexes in Cincinnati are Gate of Heaven (which opened too late) and New St Joseph. No Nusberger listed at New St Joseph. The main cemeteries old enough for Joseph to be buried in are Old St Joseph & St John's in St Bernard. St John's records are at ST Mary Cemetery, St Mary & St John Cemetery 701 East Ross Ave. Cincinnati Hamilton County Ohio USA Postal Code: 45217 Phone: (513) 242-4191 St Joseph (Old) Cemetery 3819 West Eighth Street Cincinnati Hamilton County Ohio USA Postal Code: 45205 Phone: (513) 921-3050 These two would be the most likely burial places. 3. Sue, so it is possible that the South Western Lunatic Asylum he was at in the 1860 census is a different place than Longview. Checking the addresses on the census might help clear that up. I could not find any mention of a South Western Lunatic Asylum, although maybe it was a casual name for the place and not its official name. Here is the full description of that Longview database, if it helps: About this Database Longview Insane Asylum, Mill Creek Township, Hamilton County, Ohio in 1870: List of staff and inmates Longview Insane Asylum was a commercial hospital and lunatic asylum that opened in Cincinnati in 1823. The facility dealt with medical, surgical, obstetrical and mental health issues. It also had a services for the poor. In the early 1850's, the hospital was declared disgraceful. Over 160 patients lived in space that was to serve 60. Surrounding counties frequently left their mentally-ill residents on the streets of Cincinnati knowing they'd receive care. In the late 1850's, a new building, the Longview Asylum, was started along the Miami & Erie Canal in a rural area. The architect was Isaiah Rogers. The new hospital could accommodate 400 and had a separate building for African-American patients. This is a list of approximately 600 people residing at Longview at the time of the 1870 census. The list begins on page 67 of that particular microfilm. Heading information is: Inhabitants in N. East Portion of Mill Creek Township in the county of Hamilton, State of Ohio, enumerated by me on the 24th day of June, 1870. Post office: Avondale. Henry A. Johnson, Ass't Marshal. Subsequent pages were enumerated on 30 June, 11July, 12 July, 13 July. The asylum was dwelling 230 and family 235. Written in the margin of most pages was this notation: Longview Lunatic Asylum. On page 68 this note appears: These names were taken from the books of the Asylum and many places of nativity and the occupations were not known. US Federal Census 1870, Hamilton County Ohio. National Archives Microfilm Publication. Microcopy No. 593, Population Schedules of the Ninth Census of the United States 170, Roll 1207 Ohio, Volume 23 (1-368A), Hamilton County (pt.).

    3. Hi Phyllis Thanks for checking the Longview records for me. James Flagerty was in the South Western Lunatic Asylum on the 1860 census.  The OHS thinks this name was used prior to establishing the institution as Longview. James Flaherty was definitely at Longview on the 1880 census. Thanks for saving me the $32.00 to buy a membership. I hope everyone knows that there are many records online from the 1790s to 1900s at the Hamilton County Probate Court website.   This is a current court directory but if you will look at the red print in the middle of the page, it says the archived records are available online.  So click and see what is there.  It is a goldmine.  There are images of the original marriage licenses from the 1850s.  The probate staff probably filmed them in self-defense. 1. [OHHAMILT] Naturalization questions
    2. Some input regarding naturalization records. I believe the Family History Library has Naturalizations on film for Hamilton County, Ohio; but also think those same films may be at the main Library in Cincinnati. (I have found some, but not all I was looking for). As far as the female's citizenship and naturalization, it would be very rare in the 1870's for her to have actually gone through the process separately. In most cases, women were naturalized (or became US citizens) at the time they married a citizen, or if they were under age and came to the US with an older direct relative. Perhaps she, or whomever answered the census taker, was just a year off (from the marriage). Ann Bergelt Florida

Ann is right, it's highly unlikely your great-grandmother was naturalized alone. She would have fallen under the "others" category when her father or her husband were naturalized.
