Hi List, I am looking for some information on the family of Truman Strong who lived in Miami Township in 1830. By 1840, Truman and his wife Rachel are living in Colerain where they remain until the 1860's. I would like to know when Truman and Rachel were married, believe in would be in the late 1820's in either Miami Township or in Colerain. Believe Rachel's maiden name is Booth or Boothby. Children of Truman and Elizabeth are: 1. John W. born in Cincinatti about 1832. He married Elizabeth Yanney in Hamilton County. 2. William born about 1836, most likely in the area. 3. Truman born about 1839. 4. George born about 1845. 5. Mary born about 1851. Truman was farmer in the area for many, many years and am hoping that there maybe information on him or a write up on him in some historical book. I believe Truman may have died at some point after the 1860 federal census where I loose all track of him. I am hoping maybe he is buried in one of the cemeteries in the area of Colerain. If anyone could help me out with this, it would be most helpful. Also, could someone tell me what type of community Colerain was in those days? Also, I am trying to determine if this family was Quackers...any suggestions as how to go about determining that? Thanks for your time, Paula
If anyone has any questions or comments on this genealogy report, or think they may be related, please do let me know! I do apologize as there are probably a few errors in spelling or spacing in these, when I convert them from PAF to FTW then to RTF to get them in the emails, there are a few things that bring up "errors" that can't be converted. So, his aunt, Sister Mary Angela Meiners (who was Mother Superior at the Sisters of Notre Dame Provincial House in Park H ills, Kentucky) sponsored him to come the USA. He emigrated in 1927 at the age of 19 on the ship "Berlin 3" (I have pictures). When he arrived in Cincinnati he went to work, but soon found he was discriminated against because of his thick German accent. He appealed to hi s aunt at the provincial house, and the nuns took him in and taught him to speak English with out an accent. My grandmother recalls she never once heard her father speak with an accent . During WWII he was active in anti-Hitler activities, and gave a speech on the rise of Socialist Nationalism under Hitler. An article on him and his speech appeared in the Cincinnati Enquirer. He went back to his hometown of Moenchengladbach (t! his is where he was actually raised, though born in Bottrop) after WWII and I have inherited pictures showing the devastation. He and his wife, Mildred Viola Spiesz, bought a house not far from the Provincial House where Bernard spent so much of his time, at 609 S. Arlington Road in Park Hills, Kentucky. She was featured in a Cincinnati Enquirer article for her 100th birthday! 21 JAN 1989 - TURNING 100 IS OCCASION TO THANK BLESSED MOTHER Emma Borges looked at a huge basket of 100 red and white and pink carnations, breathed the heady scent, touched the skin soft petals and tucked her face behind clasped hands in delight. Miss Borges turned 100 on Friday, and the flowers were a gift of love. She savored them for a moment and made a decision. "I want the flowers to go to the Blessed Mother," she said. Her friends and family, packed into a recreation room at Mother Margaret Hall in Delhi Township, Ohio, weren't surprised. For 100 years Emma Borges has been giving her best to God. I t was only natural that she'd want to share her bounty with the mother of Jesus. Miss Borges plants to use her flowers to decorate a statue of the Blessed Mother in the hall' s chapel. "Her whole life has been religion, prayer and the Catholic church, " said Miss Borges' cousin , Vera May Pundsack of Ft. Wright, who arranged the gathering. "She had a pipeline to heaven. " She worked hard and prayed hard and smiled a lot. "I was born in the shadow of her house," said Jack Burkhart of Edgewood. "I'm 66 years old . She's always been the same. A happy person. She has such a personality." Miss Borges grew up at 12th and Greenup streets and later lived at 20th and Pearl in Covington. She moved to Delhi Township about two years ago. Miss Borges arched heavy eyebrows and nodded to the crowd, buzzing and laughing and eating dainty sandwiches. "I never expected anything like this," she said. "All these people from all my life." The memories are sweet. "I made my first communion when I was 13, and that very summer I went to work," she said. "My family didn't have much money." She worked for milliners. "No pay for the first six months. That was the way then," she said. She started with Potter Shoes in Cincinnati when she was 25 and retired at 69. She and two sisters and a brother never married. They stayed in the family home. Some at the birthday celebration talked of the Borges dinners and card parties, filled with good jokes and good food. Those who couldn't make it to Miss Borges' party sent letters. A birthday greeting from President Reagan was upstaged by a letter from a favorite priest and a blessing from the pope. "Oh, that Vera May," Miss Borges said, pinpointing the instigator of the letters. "I've had it good," Miss Borges said. "I love my God. That's the first thing. If I didn't have my Lord, I wouldn't have anything. "" More About EMMA BORGES: Burial: November 29, 1994, Mother of God Cemetery, Kenton County, Kentucky vii. EDWARD H. BORGES, b. February 1891; d. They were her step-children! No doubt John must have been married previously to someone else, who probably died. Hello Everyone, A subscriber named Rene, who lives in Northern Kentucky has contacted me that she has a copy of << Index of Death and Marriage Notices Appearing in the Cincinnati Daily Gazette 1827-1881 Part One" by Jeffrey G. Herbert >> that she no longer has any use for and would like to find a good home for it. She says it was put out by the Hamilton Co. Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society and according to the table of contents it lists the Cincinnati cemeteries in 1850; the Revolutionary War Soldiers living in Cincinnati; members of the Pioneer Assoc. of Cincinnati in 1858; marriage licenses issued in Cincinnati from Nov. 1795 to May 1796; the alphabetical listings of death notices in the Daily Gazette from 1827-1881; and the alphabetical marriage notices for the same time period. If anyone is interested in this book, DO NOT contact her through this mailing list. You can contact her privately at NaiThom@aol.com Thanks! Marilyn - List Mom

LeeAnn, Michael HOEHN was born June 13, 1813. Frank was a few years older or younger. I can't remember. Both named their first son George. Michael also had a son named Aloysius which is not very common. They came to Cincinnati in the early 1840's. Frank stay there for 10 years then moved to Putnam County Ohio where he bought a farm. It is kind of silly to hide or remove a SS# from a death record since it is in the SSDI anyway. I just copied four of them today from as recent as 1990. However It does make sense I think when it comes to marriage or Birth records within the past 75 years or so (which is about when SS started. I always find it kind of funny hiding all this anyway. I am in the military and my SSN is literally on every piece of paper that has anything to do with me and is probably seen by dozens of people very day. Any access list has the SSN of hundreds of people and is used by different people every day. Of course my father refused to give his SSN to anyone besides SSA. Even when they wanted it for his voter registration and other things he always insisted they give him a seperate number not his SSN. When I talked with the historian at Kenton Co, He said there's some rule that they can't be published for 100 years. And it was only 50 for the death certificates. Which is why the 1954 death records are available. And birth certificates are not. On Feb 27, 2005, at 3:02 PM, CharlotteAnneMlr@aol.com wrote: > > > In a message dated 2/27/2005 2:43:42 P.M. Freinsheim is currently in Rhein-Pfalz, but at one time was considered Bavaria. So, your ancestor may be from the same area as mine (or may not). Do you have an approximate birth date for Michael and Frank and I can try and keep an eye open in the Freinsheim records if I come to truly understand them :). Hi LeeAnn, How do you like the German surname list? I've never tried it. I recently subscribed to the GERMANY-PASSENGER-LISTS-L@rootsweb.com list. Don't let the name mislead you, it seems to be focused on German emigration as a whole, and on helping people figure out their families' locations of origin there. The administrator is friendly and knowledgeable. He is in Germany and up-to-date on what's available. Hello Janet. I do know her parents were Johann Hoehn and Barbara Wolf. They lived in Freinsheim, Bavaria. Johann Hoehn was born 1802 in Frienshiem and his parents were Wendel Hoehn and Sophia Jacobi. At this time I do not have any of her siblings :(. I haven't attempted looking them up on the IGI yet since that isn't my ancestral line (mine is through George Spiesz's second wife Christina Brueckmann, also of Freinsheim). I recently recieved the microfilm for Freinsheim. I've only looked at it once, but I will try again. I found it VERY difficult to read (more difficult than other old german church records I've ordered) so my comprehension was minimal at best. But, after looking at it a few times, I may begin to decipher it better. In the next month, if I find any siblings on that microfilm, I will post them to this mailing list in hopes that you will see them. On the census, did they ever say a part of Germany they were from? For instance, Hesse or Bavaria or Thuringen or Prussia? Thanks for writing Janet. LeeAnn, I am researching the name Hoehn in Cincinnati. Do you know who Anna Maria Hoehn's parents were or brothers? I have a Michael Hoehn and Frank Hoehn who came to Cincinnati in the early 1840's. I have no idea where they came from in Germany. Janet
i sent to the archdiocese a few years ago while searching my father's VOEGTLE side of the family. the archdiocese sent me pages of information from the church records. it was wonderful. i will do this again. thanks. They do charge $25.00 to research for one hour, so try to be as clear and specific with your questions as you possibly can. There is a sample letter on the site that shows how to set up your questions. The way that I understand it, the Archdiocese is a central archive that has all the old church data from the congregations in the Cincinnati, Ohio area. Am I correct? Last year, I sent for records, but I didn't get much information from the archive. It appeared to me that they did the absolute minimum possible, but they may find more for you. Ok guys, here's the last one I sent to the list serv. The only one that would apply to your two mailing lists would in fact be the first (the others are in Germany), so I've deleted those. Anyway, I will also be sending over the next few days, more family group sheets of descendancy of my various Cincinnati and Covington ancestors. Any questions on those, please do email me.
