    3. Lori, If you have a marriage certificate from the church, you probably have more info than you would get from the courts. It's true a good number of records were lost in courthouse fires. But there is also the problem of information required on marriage records at that time.....very little. Back then you didn't get ages or birthdates but that he was at least 21 and she was at least 18. Parents of either was not asked for nor any witnesses. You got the names of the couple, the date of the marriage and who performed the service. You're lucky to have what you do, but unfortunately it seems that's the best you are going to do. I'm actually in the same spot you are. My great grandparents were married May 10, 1870. I was able to get that from an index of restored marriage records. Their's was one lost in one of the fires. My next step will be to contact the Archdioceses to research their archives for the church record. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but hopefully you have a better understanding. If still needed, I can offer the shoulder to cry on, and a box of tissues. 1. Re: [OH-HAMILT] German Methodist Orphan Asylum - Cuyahoga County
    2. Well, we're more a page for Hamilton County, Ohio, but the advice would probably be the same: The 1880 census is free online, with an every-name index, at Familysearch.org. When you get to Familysearch, click on "Search", then on "Census", then choose the 1880 census. The rest will be easy. You enter the name you're looking for, and the place (county and state) Even if the person wasn't the "head of the household" (i.e., if they were in an orphanage,) their names should still appear in the index. Hope this helps you --- good luck! 3. Hi Barbara, I wrote and heard back from Hamilton County Probate Court at 230 E. 9th St, 10th Floor. I think it's the same one that you're talking about? 3. I was by the cemetery last week, although I was just at Blue Rock going onto Colerain, it seemed in much better shape than the last time I had been by. Don't get me wrong, it is certainly not Spring Grove, but I could actually see tomb stones & not just overgrown grass, weeds etc. The volunteers that have been working there have definitely made a difference. It sounds like now it's up to our government agencies to decide who, the county or the city or even both who will help to preserve what is left. And perhaps even the many volunteers & others interested....... Linda

    2. Lori, I may have the dates a little off, but I seem to recall that Cincinnati had 4 courthouse fires during the 19th. century. So it is quite possible that the records you seek were destroyed. Unless the parties concerned made an effort to have their records remade then they are gone for good. If it's any consolation, a lot of us are in the same boat. I think the suggestion that you check the church records is a good one. Sharon Schwartz

    3. Hi, Do you know your William Martin's parent's names? Renee Werth Hi Folks, I'm wondering if anyone has access to Cincinnati directories for 1880 and working backwards from there. Looking for William MARTIN. In 1880, he was living on Longworth St. in a boarding house of some sort. He was employed as a waiter at Hunt's Hotel. I'm trying to establish how long he had been in the Cincinnati area prior to 1880. I should mention his age in 1880 was 24. Also tracking the woman that became his wife in 1880, Ellen "Nellie" RYAN. In 1880 she was living in the Charles Taft household and listed as a servant age 20. I don't know how and even if she would be listed, but figured it's worth a shot. Again, working backwards from 1880. 3. Hi busy Hamilton County List, Ollie Fox Teeters (1872-1948) lived in Delhi twp. Her funeral services were held at Union Chapel in 1948.I am interested in finding more about the chapel and cemetery if that is where she is buried. Her parents were William H.Fox (1840-?) and Sarah Rouse Girkin Fox (1841 -?) I am unable to find their death dates and places of burial also. I have information on the Fox siblings and history of Sarah til her death that I will share. Thanks for any help. Gladys in rainy San Diego

    3. Thanks very much, Phyllis. I will check out the 'dressmaker' Nellie, and see if it fits. Nellie's middle initial is M, but I don't have one for William. I only know that he would most likely show up as being employed as a waiter, and most likely boarding somewhere. Thanks again, Phyllis! Lori -- "Phyllis Garratt" <pgarratt@gessert.us> wrote: Lori, do you have a middle initial for him? There are quite a few Wm Martins and W. Martins listed in the 1876 Cincinnati City Directory. Here's Nellie from the 1876 Cincinnati City Directory: Nellie Ryan, dress maker, bds. 48 Lodge. Phyllis -----Original Message----- Looking for William MARTIN.
