    1. Help Finding Information About Civil War Ancestor
    2. Greetings: Last week, I discovered I have a Civil War ancestor. Now, I would like to find more information about this but I am not sure where I should begin to search. I hope someone on this list can point me in the right direction. Here is what I currently know about the ancestor in question: Name: Jacob Rinner. Born: in Germany in 1834. Died: in Cincinnati in November 1869. Wife: died in March 1869. Children: three, born in 1860, 1862, and 1866. Lived with relatives following death of parents. Tombstone: none. I was not able to find the name Jacob Rinner doing a search on the "Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System" web site. I suspect his name was misspelled. The "Military Graves Location" ledger at the Hamilton County Court House only indicates he served in the Army. Could the children have filed any kind of cliam for survivor benefits? If so, where can I learn more about this? Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Jim Birch

    3. I'm especially sad and upset that the Main Library will be closed on Sunday afternoons, in favor of opening two or three branches on Sunday afternoons, because the staffs are smaller in the branches. As all you researchers know, the reference materials, especially in genealogy, are not available at the branches. Think censuses, indexes, family histories, etc.

    1. Three YOUNG Brothers - Dave, John, Jeff (living)
    2. Betty
    3. Hello, I would very much like to be able to correspond with any of three YOUNG brothers who seem to have spent part of their childhood years in or near Cincinnati. And, they seem to have decided to remain in Ohio where they married and might possibly still live. They are: David YOUNG, Jonathan YOUNG, and Jeffrey YOUNG I've checked web sites like www.411.com and www.switchboard.com and there seems to be at least two of each name in Ohio currently. Their father, Winthrop YOUNG, grew up in New Haven, CT, and spent part of his married years in Ohio. Winthrop spent many years researching the YOUNG family name, and typed up a very good "family tree document" and provided a copy to the Killingly, CT, Historical Society. Winthrop's father was Earl YOUNG, only child of Abner and Clara (DEXTER) YOUNG of Killingly, CT. I am interested in Mrs. YOUNG's extended family, including her parents, John and Mary (CLARK) DEXTER, and their adopted daughter, whom they re-named, Mary Anna Clark DEXTER, in 1892. There is a VERY large MYSTERY regarding the birth and birth-parents of my grandmother, Mary Anna Clark DEXTER, born Feb. 1889, and who was reportedly "a foundling" in Boston, MA. I believe she was actually born in Killingly, CT, and the DEXTER's brought her up here when they strangely moved from their life-long home - up to Boston. Winthrop YOUNG's document only has a very brief mention of his great-grandparents, John and Mary DEXTER. And, he made NO reference to his grandmother's much younger adoptive-sister. So, I would like to know if any of his sons in Ohio have their father's "boxes of notes, papers, documents, etc." which he would have used to produce his "family document." Thank you for your time. Betty (near Lowell, MA) David, Jonathan, and Jeffrey YOUNG also had a sister. At the time the document was written (1980's? 1990?), their sister was getting ready to move from CT to MA with her husband.

He and his wife, Margaret, born 1830 in Wales, are listed in the 1860 Hamilton County census with son John, born 1849 and daughter Margaret born 1858. This daughter Margaret moved to Sussex Co, NJ and married George Danley (my great grandparents). Would love to find out more about this family. Any info or suggestions greatly appreciated. My next quest was to find some kind of death notice for Wm. H. his occupation was carriage maker/ carpenter. He died somewhere between 1891? and before 1912. I know that's a stretch, he seems all to have disappeared, with no visible trace. I tried the various sources for that also, but didn't have any luck. I'm almost ready to just give it up. It really can get discouraging. Maybe something will turn up when I least expect it. Anne Seems I had the same problem with a gggrandfather who also was a carriage maker. This family moved back and forth across the Ohio River: born in Ohio, married in KY, children born in Ohio, moved back to Covington, then back to Cincinnati. Finally found he died in Dayton, KY and was buried in Spring Grove Cemetery in Cincinnati. (Years 1849 to 1898) I found where he died by looking at the newspaper topics through CINCH which, of course is no longer in use. There was a brief obituary stating when he died and where he was buried. Joan in Scottsdale AZ

    1. Re: [OH-HAMILT] Ellen Ryan
    2. Lori
    3. Ok, Margaret, good idea! Ellen "Nellie" RYAN: Her middle initial shows up many years later as "M". There's a possibility that her given name was Mary Ellen RYAN, as a potential family match in 1870 Illinois is indicating. (Her firstborn was named Mary E, also) Nellie was born in June of 1860, in Ohio, according to census records. Nellie's parents: Listed on her death certificate as Lawrence RYAN and Mary MCCLOUD, both of Ireland. William MARTIN: Never had a middle initial or name turn up. No birth month listed on anything, but 1856 is listed for year on the 1900 census in NYC, and his birthplace has always been listed as England. William's parents: Listed on his death certificate as William and Mary MARTIN, both born in England. Nellie & William's marriage was at St. Xavier's on Sycamore St, on 3 Nov 1880. No ages or parents names are listed on it. Record was signed by W. Boex, S.J., with Witnesses Thomas CAHILL and Maria QUINN. (I should also add that I've been in contact with St. Xavier's, and they have no records on William or Nellie prior to the marriage) Nellie & William's firstborn was born 4 Sept 1881 in New York City, so they relocated between the marriage in November 1880 and the birth in Sept 1881. So, basically what I have on these people starts in 1880 and I have a lot of stuff moving forward from there. I do have 1 photograph of Nellie & William, along with another couple that are unknown. I'd be happy to post it here, but I'm not sure if it's allowed in this forum. Would love to know the identity of the other couple. It was a tintype photo that was in with Nellie's papers dating back to the 1880's. I was wondering if it might have been taken before they left Cincinnati for New York. Thanks you guys for all your help with this, it's much appreciated. 3. Hi Diana--- Thank you for the information. I do have the 1870 census. I will look into A. Scott. Mary Morgan was a widow in 1912 when she died. I would dearly love to find some information on Wm. H. Morgan's demise between 1891 --1911. Thanks again.
