Hi Cheryl, I think I will be sure to include the source in the body of the message from now on! This email was from some time ago. These are names of men who are in an old (circa 1875) photo album of German Pioneer Society members (in possession of the Cincinnati Historical Society). There is most likely membership information on him as well in one of the Tracer magazines put out by the Hamilton County Genealogical Society. Do you have that information? It gives place of birth, birth date, when they came to the US and through which port, etc. Phyllis -----Original Message----- From: Cheryl Fehring [mailto:cahf@fuse.net] Subject: Re: [OH-HAMILT] RE: KUHLMANN What is the source (and years) that you are using for the names below. Dear Listmembers, I am new to this list and may not ask the correct questions. I have been searching for information about my dad's family for years. I am looking for Joseph Heiss who was born in 1825 in Baden. Any help would be appreciated. Sincerely, Marilyn
<< Hi list, I just found on the county list website that two of my ancestors were buried at West Fork Road (or Abadoned Cemetery), believe it is located in Green Twp. Can anyone on the list tell me if there is a plot book available for this cemetery. I would like to find out if there were any other Yanney's buried there. Also, can any one tell me which religion this cemetery maybe associated with? And, perhaps the history behind the cemtery...from what I can gather it looks like a rather small buriel place. Thanks, Paula
Hi list! I am trying to find any information on James Boothby who lived in Miami Township in the 1830's. Believe he died before the 1840 Federal Census. He was married to Abigail Round in Yankeetown, Clermont County in 1802. Somewhere between 1820 and 1830 the family moved to Miami Township. James and Abigail had atleast 8 children, sure would love to find out who the children were. Believe 2 of their sons names were James and William. Any and all information on this surnames would be extremely helpful. Thanks, Paula
Dear Yvonne Do you have any knowledge of where they were from in Cincinnati? There are Catholic Niehaus on the westside of town today. The Niehaus-Minges Funeral home is in Westwood in the St. Catherine/St. Martin area. I went to school with the Minges kids and Wessels as well! I just got this reply e-mail from Marianne Reynolds at the library. If you have contacted these people already...do it again. They need all the support they can get. Lori Thank you for your support. Someone I know just got the axe today and the rest of us are nervously waiting to see if we have a job. Here is a further list of contacts. At this point, any letter writing, calling or emails to the Ohio Legislature should be directed at those in the highest offices of the House and Senate. Attached you will find the lists of the leaders of the Ohio Legislature. As per the suggestion of an aide in Representative Steve Driehaus's office, we should concentrate our letter writing, email and calling efforts to the people on this list. The list includes the Chair of the Finance and Appropriations Committee also. Although time is of the essence, it was also suggested that we continue the campaign of emails, letters and calls until the end of May when the House and Senate will vote on the final budget bill. I would very much like for you to send me a copy of the obit for Barbara Deible, she died about September 28,1872. The only information I have for Julian George Deible death is he was buried August 5,1872. If you can check for a notice with this information, and send me a copy, that would be wonderful and if not I do understand. I have contacted Gov.Taft as well as many other politicians asking them to support the much needed library system in our state. Thank you again, Lora Chaffin
I just made a request to the library about two obits last night and got a reply today. I wanted to know if they had the Cincinnati Voltsblatt on film and if it was available for inter library loan or if they could send me a copy of the obits I was looking for. Maybe it will help to answer some questions for someone. This is the reply I got: Our newspaper microfilm does not leave the building. There is one copy of each film, and each gets heavy use by patrons and staff. If you want to use them, you are welcome to come to the Magazines and Newspapers Dept. on the second floor of the Ninth St. building of the Main Library. We can mail you copies of obits. Barbara Deible is listed in the Volksblatt index, so we can make you a copy of her obit and send it to you. Julian Deible is not listed in the indexes of any of our German language local newspapers. We also searched the indexes of the English language local newspapers of the day, and he does not appear in them, either. The only local newspaper of the time that does not have a print index is the Cincinnati Enquirer. If you would like, we can add his name to our huge queue of searches to perform. See below. We have received your request for photocopies and will process it as expeditiously as possible. ALL REQUESTS ARE NORMALLY PUT INTO A QUEUE IN THE ORDER RECEIVED. We generally receive 300 - 500 requests per month, which are handled by regular departmental staff when they are not scheduled on the reference desk, along with their other off-desk duties. There is no one assigned exclusively to this task. We have been particularly short-staffed since our department was cut three positions in 2003 due to severe state funding reductions. The state government is currently proposing even more massive cuts that, if approved, will result in the loss of millions of dollars to our system annually and additional significant staff reduction. This will further reduce our ability to provide services; if you are an Ohio resident or an out-of-state user of our e-mail reference services, you may wish to contact Ohio state legislators to voice your support of the continuation of library funding at current levels. (Our local system is 95% state-funded.) Fulfilling requests can often take six to ten weeks or more, depending upon the size of the queue, staff availability, and other departmental projects. If an item is needed by a certain date for an important reason, you need to make us aware of this, so we can let you know if we have the staff time available to process your order by that deadline. In order for us to place your order ahead of others in the queue, your request must be time-sensitive, and you must have an important reason other than personal preference (business, legal, etc.). We do not give full or partial obituary information over the telephone except in the case of an upcoming funeral. WE ALSO DO NOT CITE INFORMATION FROM INDIVIDUAL DEATH NOTICES VIA E-MAIL OR POSTAL MAIL. TO ACCESS THE CONTENT OR TO VERIFY THE INCLUSION OF A DEATH NOTICE IN A LOCAL NEWSPAPER, YOU MUST REQUEST A COPY. Beginning in 2002, charges are .25 per page for all copies, regardless of destination. PLEASE DO NOT SEND PAYMENT IN ADVANCE. We do not accept credit cards, and the cost cannot be charged to your library card. (An invoice is included with the completed request and payment can be made via cash, check, or money order.) Please be aware that requests that do not include complete references to specific publications may require considerable time to research. Also, when an exact citation is not supplied, it is possible that we will not be able to locate the material requested. A few generations ago, it was not uncommon for families to forgo today's more common practice of placing a decedent's obituary in the newspaper. Hence, many persons who died in the 1800's or earlier and even quite a few who died in the earlier part of the 1900's may not have ever had any sort of obituary or funeral notice published in the newspaper. Even nowadays, a published funeral/death notice is at the discretion of the family, although most families choose to include this sort of public announcement, for which there is usually a charge. Lengthy requests, or those which include long lists of citations, will be completed in stages, as staff availability permits. Also, please note that we are unable to complete requests for death notices that do not include an exact date of death (month, day and year), as we search local newspapers only for five days from the date of death. Just a reminder about the OGS Conference in Akron, Ohio, this week from April 14-16. Also, Jeff Herbert just published his next index in the Baptism series from 1870-1879. And Kenny Burck has a new marriage records index for 1885-1890. Both for Hamilton County. Please let me know if you want to know more about them. The Hamilton County Genealogy Society will have 2 more death records books and Kenny will have another marriage records book soon. And Bill Graver just came up to me at the Hamilton County Chapter annual event last Saturday about a tome. He has an index of many early maps that show names of people, streets, etc.--all indexed. A loose copy is now available at the Cincinnati Historical Society Library/Archives for those who live in this area. More than 700 pages so this should be a great reference for finding where people were in the city. I'm sure he said that they did not have to be landowners to be on these maps. I don't have a hard copy yet, so that is all I can tell you about it for now. But perhaps he will get it to me before I leave for Akron. Janet, I believe there's an index on the Public Library site. http://www.cincinnatilibrary.org/resources/ This gives you the day and page of the paper that the article was in. If you live in Cincinnati area, you can go to the 2nd floor of the main library and look at them on microfilm. I'm sure you can still email them too.
