    3. Phyllis, Thanks so much for posting this stuff. 2. Thanks so much for the examples of old-fashioned "flowery" news descriptions. What wonderful prose! We can all imagine how those tales of divorce would look in print today - perhaps the National Enquirer could give the sordid details. Keep 'em coming. 1. SMITH/HOBAR/SPECKERMAN Scandalous Reception 1877
    2. Phyllis Garratt
    3. News article from the Cincinnati Daily Enquirer, Monday Morning, September 24, 1877. Scandalous Reception to a Company of Serenaders "George H. SMITH, Matt HOBAR, and Henry SPECKERMAN, a company of Covington and Newport amateur musicians tried a serenade on a bad-house kept on Sixth street, opposite the Market-house, yesterday morning. The proprietress of the bad-house being an Italian, with a fine ear for music, was offended with the playing and expressed her disgust by hurling from the window, not a rotten cabbage-head, but a half-filled and tolerably heavy spittoon, right into the midst of the band of minstrels. It landed square on the head of George H. Smith, the flutist. The amateurs didn't like this reception, and being a little under the influence of beer, were ready for a muss. The police arrested them before they had an opportunity to pay up the score. All day yesterday and all last night the flutist played dolorous music in his cell. With the instinct of a true musician they all three held on to their instruments, just as a true soldier holds fast to his gun." Phyllis

    3. In the mid 1960's I attended a church called the Evangelical United Brethren Church at McMillan and Rohs Sts. across from Hughes H.S. near the U. of Cincinnati. I think the church was a product of two or more churches having merged. The building might have been more than 60 years old. I think it is now a United Methodist Church, but I'm not sure. I no longer live in Cincinnati. Good luck! 1. HIRSCH Divorce MACKLIN SCULLY June 1888 News Article
    2. Phyllis Garratt
    3. From the Cincinnati newspaper, The Enquirer, Tuesday, June 26, 1888: "A 'State of things' was developed yesterday at the hearing of the divorce suit of Samuel HIRSCH against Mary HIRSCH. The woman, through her ignorance and fondness for men other than her legal husband, committed a crime punishable by imprisonment in the Penitentiary. It is not probably, however, that she will be prosecuted. The couple were married May 31, 1882. In 1885 she left him and went to Cleveland with a man named Pat MACKLIN. She returned in a short time and confessed that she had committed an unpardonable sin. MACKLIN also told HIRSCH that his wife's story was true. HIRSCH would not live with her after that. She had sold all her household furniture before she went away with MACKLIN. When her husband refused to live with her and filed suit for divorce she supposed that the bringing of the suit released her from all obligations as his wife. She therefore, not long afterward married a man named Michael SCULLY, in Covington. She is now living with him in this city. This was the story told to Judge Evans, and he allowed HIRSCH a divorce." (Covington) KY and there is: Predmore, Andrew W. age 23, resident of OH - farmer, b. OH fb NJ mb OH married Fowler, Maggie A. age 20, res. of Kenton Co. b. OH fb OH mb KY. Date of the license issuance and of the marriage is 3/8/1870 Record from Marriage Book #1, Kenton Co.
