    2. Phyllis Garratt
    3. Is Oskamp-Nolting of Cincinnati still in business, but under another name? I know there were several Oskamps at one time. A jewelry store and then a store that carried a variety of items. My father said that when his father left Cincinnati in 1902, that he continued to order items from Oskamp-Nolting. My Dad said he used to love looking through their catalog. I just wondered if they were still around. Phyllis G.

    1. Regarding land to ME Church of Columbia twp - HELP!!!!
    2. Kathryn
    3. It appears to me that Joseph Edwards sold a quarter of an acre in 1818 to the Methodist Episcopal Church of Columbia township for a meeting house and graveyard from his Section 32, Township 4 (Columbia twp) property. The following is to replace the lost deed. Job Edwards is the son of Joseph and Hannah Mulford Edwards and he and his brothers paid taxes on this property after the death of their father (1841). We have never been able to find the burial spot of Joseph Edwards and I suspect that it might be in this cemetery WHEREVER that might be. One problem is that the plat map shows no Section 32 but we have transcripts of two documents that state that Joseph Edwards owned Section 32, Township 4. He was in Columbia twp from 1810 tax list to the 1840 Census. Does anyone know what church and burial ground this is? See document transcription below: Kathryn E. Stuart DEED from JOHN DOWNEY to JOB EDWARDS Hamilton County, Ohio Deeds Book 148. Page 344 Property in Section 32 Township 4 Fractional Range 2 Refiling of lost Deed originally dated 21 March 1818 1/4 Acre on South Side of County Road for Church & Burial lots John Downey. Deed. 1. Early Marriage Record s - McClelland/Marshall
    2. Judith Watt
    3. My ancestor, James McClellan/d, remarried abt. 1821-2-3, in Hamilton County, to Elizabeth Marshall. They jointly filed a Petition for her "dower rights" in 1821 and this was granted by the Probate Ct. of Ham. Co. in 1823. I am thus assuming James and Elizabeth might have married around 1820. He and his first wife, Ann Wilson, had 10 children and lived in the Springdale area prior to 1800. James died in 1831 when Elizabeth then filed for a "widow's allowance" which was granted. I believe she died abt. 1834 when Probate records show an administrator was appointed. Would someone have the Early Marriage Records for Hamilton Co. and look for both James and Elizabeth's marriage and a possible earlier marriage for Elizabeth ??? to ??? Marshall. Thank you. 1. MULFORD Family Photograph with connection to WILSON Family
    2. Shelley Cardiel
    3. I've "rescued" an old photograph of Jesse Ames MULFORD which was taken at the Stevens Studio in Logansport, Indiana. The photograph was likely taken in the 1870's with Jesse appearing to be in his 40's at the time. Based on limited research, I believe that Jesse Ames MULFORD was b. 9 Dec 1830 at Watervliet Center, NY and married Martha Baxter WILSON 17 Jan 1856 at Carthage, OH. In 1880 the family was living in Logansport, IN and recorded in the census there. Jesse was age 49, born in NY, a RR Engineer whose parents were also born in NY. His wife, listed as Marthia was age 47, born in OH to parents also born in OH. The couple had four daughters living with them at the time, including, Luella age 23, Saddie age 20, Edith age 16, and Mollie age 12. The two oldest girls were born in KY and the two youngest in IN. I'm hoping to locate someone from this family so that the photograph can be returned to its rightful place, with family. If you are a member of this family, or know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley

    1. Re: [OH-HAMILT] Save NARA
    2. Hello, DO NOT post notices like this to the Hamilton County mailing list without asking my permission first. It is OFF TOPIC, since posts to this list should only refer to anything related to Hamilton County. Any government operation is at risk during the budget process, however, the NARA itself is not the target of the proposed budget cuts; rather it is a related organization, the NHPRC, that is probably going to be abolished. This organization provides grants to local (not national) archives and record preservation projects so the message itself is not accurate about NARA. It might be acceptable on a few relevant lists for genealogical resource topics -- if it could be verified that it is still current and relevant--which it doesn't appear to be--the website says action was needed by April 26th. It could also be posted in a general forum--something like ROOTS-L or the RootsWeb-Review but permission would be needed before it was posted and pre-screeners or the editor would first verify that the info is up-to-date and accurate before publishing it so that ALL RootsWeb users can see it rather than having it repeated on county and state lists over and over. 2. Lori Nichols
    3. Hi folks, I just wanted to thank ALL of you that helped me with this issue. I'm pleased to report that I sent the documentation in for a headstone for my great uncle yesterday! Uncle Dave served during WWI, and passed away in 1971, and has not had a headstone on his grave. Regarding the cemetery charges, the only fee involved was a $75.00 charge for a foundation for the headstone. The rep at the cemetery told me that the government will take care of everything else. This is one stone out of the way, and 1 more to go (that I know at this time, anyway!). I do not have my grandfathers military papers, and am waiting for my 3rd request from St. Louis to come back. So far, they've not been able to locate his records. All I know is that he served during WW1, and was stationed in Illinois. Hopefully, I'll have this information reasonably soon, so I can put in a request for his headstone also. The gal that handles the military burial issues is on vacation until next week, so I guess it will be then when I find out what happens with all the back fees that they want before they can put a stone in. (My g-uncle and grandfather are buried in different Catholic cemeteries) Anyway, thanks again to all that helped. It still blows me away with what can be accomplished when one belongs to these mailing lists! 1. overview of Cincinnati research. Was: looking for DEMPSEY birth & marr info in Cincinnati
    2. J Hansen
    3. Hi Jacqi, Welcome to Cincinnati (so to speak). I'll try to give you a run-down on Cincinnati research from my experience to give you a general idea, but hopefully others who know more or better or who have access to resources can answer you more specifically (I'm in New England and far from any library with any sort of collection of use to me). I'm cutting and pasting parts of this from old posts, so if it sounds disjointed and/or repetitious, I apologize. You are unlikely to find birth and death records for that time period for two reasons: one, the state of Ohio didn't require them until sometime around 1908, although there were some earlier ones; and two, because the courthouse in Cincinnati was burned down in 1884 and most records were destroyed (although efforts have been made to compile "restored" records). Your best bet is church records if you can locate the church. Some people on this list may have access to published baptismal records. Or if you can narrow down the church, the LDS has microfilmed a lot of church records-- Protestant for the most part. For Catholic records you pretty much have to work through the Archdiocese archives-- they'll do the search for a minimum fee, I think of $25.00. http://www2.eos.net/dajend/catholic.html http://www.catholiccincinnati.org/archives/ Here are some useful sites you might want to look at. Be sure to check out the links and look into the nooks and crannies of the sites: Cemeteries: A general Hamilton county cemetery web site: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ohhamilt/cemeteries1.htm There are some excellent on-line cemetery records, but many are not yet on-line. If you can narrow down the most likely cemeteries by location and/or religion, someone here might be able to check copies of published records for you or even provide the contact info for the cemetery. In any case be sure to check out these 2 sites which do have on-line records: http://www.springgrove.org/springgrove/genealogy_query.asp for Spring Grove Cemetery, which is a very large (and beautiful) cemetery founded in the mid-1800s. They have images of the actual records from burials on-line and computer records for those from around 1990 on. http://www.rootsweb.com/~ohhamcem/cemlist.html Listings for Wesleyan Cemetery, which is maintained by a member of this list. There may be others, but these are the 2 I'm aware of. There is a general site for Catholic cemeteries, but their records are not on-line: http://www.cccsohio.org/Default.htm A couple more sites which have good info on Cincinnati genealogy: http://www.jungclas.com/gensite/hamilton/hamresou/ (includes a link to where particular published or filmed cemetery records and church records may be located. Plus more.) and http://members.aol.com/ogshc/ogshcweb.htm This is the local genealogy society's site with more links. They put out a very informative book on the how's and where's etc. of research in Hamilton County, very reasonably priced-- if you think you'll be doing much research in the area, it might be worth buying a copy. There are people on the list with access to city directories for Cincinnati which might give the location of your people and of possibly near-by churches in your time frame. The 1890 directory is available free on-line at http://members.aol.com/cintigenealogy/1890citydirectory/ As I said, Ohio did not require death certificates until 1908 (although there may be other instances of earlier versions). There is more information about the "history" of death certificates in Ohio on the Ohio Historical Society site: http://www.ohiohistory.org/resource/archlib/refemail.html#death The OHS can send you a copy of the certificate for a reasonable fee if you have the date-- for details see the site. They do have an on-line index for 1913-1937 (more years are in the works). For deaths occurring before 1908 (or even after, why not?), your best bet is to find obituaries/death notices which might provide the name of their church/minister or the cemetery. Church records can be a gold mine in Cincinnati if you can locate the one(s) your ancestors belonged to. The public library-- http://www.cincinnatilibrary.org/ -- has a partial on-line index to local newspapers, including obituaries. They also charge a small fee to copy the obits and send them to you. The catch is you need the date of death, at least to within a few days-- if it's not in their newspaper index you need to find the date some other way. I haven't used this service for a couple of years so ask on the list and someone who has done it more recently can give you up-to-date information, or check the list archives. The Little Miami Publishing Company has published a bunch of local history books, including transcribed church and cemetery records. Worth looking for in libraries or perhaps someone on the list can do lookups if you have a specific reference: http://littlemiamibooks.com/ Heritage books also publishes some (heritagebooks.com) Sorry this is so long. Hope it helps. DEMPSEY and Margaret TULLY Dempsey in Chicago, with no success...until someone found them for me in the Hamilton Co 1900 census. Does anyone on this list have access to birth and/or marriage data for Cincinnati in that time period? The census shows their daughter, Margaret (or Rita) born Aug 1891 in OH, and I am wondering if that would be in Cincinnati or elsewhere. Also, news to me from the census, Michael's niece Adeline DAVIDSON, b 1893 in OH, was living with them. It appears Adeline may have been orphaned. In later info I have, she is called "daughter" of Michael and Margaret, not niece. Does anyone have access to death/obit info that would show her parents' names? Thanks in advance for any help, suggestions, or referral to online resources for Ohio/Hamilton (a new area for me to research). Jacqi -- No virus found in this outgoing message. 1. funding for NARA
    2. The following e-mail was distributed by the NHPRC Joint Advocacy Task Force. I wanted to share this information, as it is of concern to any genealogists who use archives. I just finished signing the petition. Please send this to any other Rootsweb or genealogy lists you're on. Penny Nelson Garden City, MI The President's budget recommendations for Fiscal Year 2006 slash or eliminate more than 150 federal programs. In that budget, the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) has been targeted to receive NO funding. This includes no funds for the grants program and no funds for staffing to support the NHPRC programs. It effectively eliminates NHPRC. The Council of State Historical Records Coordinators, the Society of American Archivists, and the National Association for Government Archivists and Records Administrators are working collaboratively to address this threat to NHPRC and NARA. Archivists across the U.S. are rallying to save NHPRC while also ensuring that NARA has sufficient funding to sustain its current programs and continue to advance in areas that benefit all archival repositories and every citizen of the United States As part of our efforts to continue to express to Congress interest in restoration of funding for NHPRC, we have created an online petition. Please consider signing this petition, and please forward it to any listservs, e-mail groups, or organizations and people you feel would be interested in helping with this effort. It is a quick and easy way for many people to assist. The petition will be forwarded to the House Appropriations Committee and Subcommittee on Treasury, Transportation, HUD and the Judiciary in late May. The petition can be access at: _www.savearchives.org_ (http://www.savearchives.org/) Click on the "petition" button. If you have not received a previous action alert on this issue, we encourage you to also write a letter to your members of Congress.
