    1. Dr. Hiram Smith
    2. A. Murdock
    3. I just received a copies of obituaries for Hiram Smith and Elizabeth J. Smith from the The Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County. It did not take too long and the charge was only $.50. I had e-mailed the library with the date of the publication and my name. They were great! Here are the obituaries. I am also including the other names listed on the same page. I did not transcribe the page in its entirety. If anyone wants more information, I will be glad to share. >From Cincinnati Commercial 10-27-1866 Died SMITH -- On Thursday, October 25, of cholera, Elizabeth J. Smith, the beloved wife of Dr. Hiram Smith, aged 47 years, 8 months and 18 days. Funeral from the residence of her husband, 285 West Sixth street, at 2 o'clock this (Saturday) afternoon. Friends of the family are invited to attend. (As a matter of information, the undertaker was J. Soards & Company according to the information at Spring Grove.) Others on the same page are as follows: James Davison of Covington, Kentucky, aged 56 Lucy Belle Helman, age 2 yrs 1 mo, daughter of W.H. Helman and Susie E. Helman, grandparent J. W. Robinson Emma C. Widner - no age given Charles Feller of Germany, aged 46 Dr. David Baird of Woodland Farm, Miami County, Ohio, 62 John W. Dunham, jr. of Wilmington, Ohio James C. Shaw, a native of Perth, Canada West, 34 Annie T. Harris, wife of John Harris, aged 33 >From Cincinnati Commercial July 10, 1883 DEATHS SMITH -- Monday evening, July 9, 1883, at 4 o'clock, Hiram Smith, in his 73d year, at his late residence, Norwood. Due notice of funeral will be given. Unfortunately, this is not my Dr. Hiram Smith. This Hiram Smith is buried at Spring Grove. He was born August 31, 1810 in Hamilton County, Ohio. His parents were Abraham and Elizabeth Smith. I still need help finding my Dr. Hiram Smith. If anyone can help, I would appreciate your help. Smiths are not the easiest people to track. In the 1870 census Dr. Hiram Smith was in Cumminsville, Ohio - essentially a suburb on the west side of Cincinnati. My information shows that Dr. Hiram Smith was born March 22, 1811 in Woodhull, Steuben County, New York. He married 2nd Mary Louisa Martin, July 14, 1868. I believe he was a member of the Presbyterian Church. The 1880 census does not show a Hiram that fits the information I have. Other deaths >From Cincinnati Commercial July 10, 1883 Britting, infant child, aged 2 mos 3 days, infant child of John and Christina Britting Cook, Arthur, infant son of Willard E. and Jennie Cook, age 4 mos Coats, M.H. in Covington, Ky, aged 67 Donn Ellen, Wm. 3. Hi Barbara, Please let me know how much a copy of this book would cost, as well as shipping charges to Indianapolis, IN. It sounds like a wonderful reference book that I could really use as all my ancestors were from Hamilton County, OH. Thanks for mentioning it to someone else. Does the book indicate if the records are indexed and will the recorders office check the index if asked? 1. Spring Grove - section for infants/toddlers?
    2. Blais
    3. Hi All - In looking over my list of "must see" graves at Spring Grove, I noticed that four infants born to my ggg-grandmother were buried in Section 29, apart from the rest of the family in Section 113. When I searched on just that section number (I love the Spring Grove site!), I got a huge list of various surnames and random clicking revealed that all of burials were that of young children before 1900 - the ailments differed but the ages that I saw were all under 4 years old. Also, Section B seemed to be for individual plots, rather than family lots. If anyone has any info on these two sections, I would be appreciative. Of course, I'll be there in a week's time (yay!), so I can ask in person, too. Best, Chaille

    1. Re: [OH-HAMILT] Marriage Records of Hamilton County
    2. Linda Boorom
    3. John, I don't recall there being a distinction between the books at the courthouse. But, I have often wondered if there is a list of what was lost with each fire & what was able to be restored after. There were several fires, I don't recall exactly the years of all, but 4 in all, 1st b/f 1800, 2nd ca 1814 when the courthouse was used as a barracks during the war, 3rd 1848/49 & last in 1884. We are told that following each fire the county basically salvaged what they could into new books I presume & also advertised for people to resubmit info to be "restored" and/or I guess this was done if the need arose, say perhaps following a death & the need arose to prove a relationship. If people moved away, had died or had no other reason to have their marriage record re-recorded, it's likely they didn't bother. Hence the reason for so many gaps in our records up through the last fire in 1884. But, back to the distinction between the books. I don't know if this will help, but I have posted a page to the Hamilton Co. OHGenWeb site which refers to the microfilm that LDS has of Hamilton Co. Marriage records: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ohhamilt/marrbatch.html LDS description includes "Original", Restored A, Restored B, & Restored C. As I said, I don't recall their being a distinction between the books when I've been at the courthouse, but I also have to admit that I've mostly gone after copies for records say before 1850 which fall into the Restored A catagory & more recently for copies of later records after the 1884 fire. I will say that I've noticed by searching LDS with the batch #'s I've listed that is seemed with some of the restored records or maybe it was the single searchable batch under section C (1893-1903) that the marriages actually occured before the 1884 fire so perhaps were restored in 1893-1903 period. At some point I have thought about checking into this, I'd be curious if there was a record or something of when it was "restored", which who knows what valuable information one might glean from that if the courts required proof of some sort :-) Afraid this isn't much help, but if I find anything more conclusive I'll post it. If anyone else has something to add, please do. Linda Boorom Hamilton Co. 1. Re: [OH-HAMILT] Marriage Records of Hamilton County
    2. bob
    3. John, Not sure I have all the details straight but I'll do my best here. In the early 1890's there was a fire in the courthouse and some marriage records were destroyed. I have seen the books or similar to those you mentioned attempting to index those records that were lost, using newspaper announcements, church records or other available sources. These books I have found at various libraries and historical societies. I am not aware if an actual certificate or record exists from the courthouse for those in these indexes. At least I have not been able to find those that I wanted. At the Hamilton County courthouse they have marriage records as early as 1817 through present day. The earliest ones are in bound volumes and starting, I believe, about the 1920's they are either on microfilm or microfiche. There is also a set of books called "Marriage Bans". The information on these marriage records is very basic and limited.....groom, bride, date, place, and who performed the service. These records end about the 1930's or 1940's. I hope this answers your question. Maybe someone else can fill in the details I'm missing or correct the information I have. I do know they are in the process of filming all the records and making them available online.......sometime in the future. Being a government agency, that's probably the best you'll get to narrow it down when it will be finished. 3. They will do the search for marriage records for you. I'm not sure if there would be any sort of fee. I'm not aware of any. I've been down there several times and have never heard mention of such a fee. The best advice I can give you is to call them and see just what their policy is. The closer you can get to the date of marriage the better chance of them finding it for you. They are currently in the process of having all the records filmed to be made available online. No telling when that will be finished. Hope this answered you question. Good luck.
