    1. Hamilton County Reference Books
    2. Linda Boorom
    3. To everyone who may be interested in knowing where to find Hamilton County Reference books, I've spent the past few days doing a bit of research & compiling a list of what is available & links to those websites where you can order. I've also included a few things that are out of print, but have been advised by Barbara, the Hamilton County Chapter, OGS, Publications Director that some will be reprinted this year! I've set up a web page on the Hamilton Co. OHGenWeb site with all of the information. You will find the new page here: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ohhamilt/books.html I welcome additions & corrections :-) Linda Boorom co-coordinator Hamilton Co., OHGenWeb.

    3. Juvanne, I tried sending this to your e-mail, but it came back with an automatic response "To control spam, I now allow incoming messages only from senders I have approved beforehand......" I'm resending to the list & hope you get it by that means. If someone submits a surname to the surname registry & then later changes their e-mail address but does not notify the registry of the change, there isn't a whole lot the webmaster can do. You may be able to find a current e-mail address for the individual you are trying to contact by searching for that individual in a variety of places. You could search: A) this list's archives to see if the person sent a message to the list recently B) if there is a Martin list at rootsweb, try searching that as well C) message boards at ancestry/rootsweb or FTM GenForum for both Hamilton Co. and/or the Martin surname D) Google search for the individual you're looking for E) check http://www.rootsweb.com/~archreg/ which is an e-mail registry to see if the individual you're looking for is in the registry. F) check Rootsweb's surname list & other resources there. I can think of a dozen other places to search, you'll need to be creative. Not everyone remembers to change their e-mail address in all of the places it may have appeared over time, but usually if the individual is still active with genealogy, you can usually find them somewhere searching for something or someone :-) Linda Boorom ----- Original Message ----- From: "Juvanne Martin" <juvanne@earthlink.net> To: <OHHAMILT-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, June 17, 2005 11:19 AM Subject: [OH-HAMILT] bounced emails on the Hamilton surname page > Webmaster, would you PLEASE contact me? I just wanted you to be aware out of the 10 people listed on the Martin surname list, at least half of the emails no longer work. Perhaps a note next to their names might be appropriate. 1. parents of Alexander Constantine Martin
    2. Juvanne Martin
    3. Dear List: I am trying to locate the parents of my husband's great-grandfather, Alexander Constantiine Martin. He was born 15 Dec. 1833 in Cincinatti, Ohio to a father born in Virginia and a mother born in New Jersey. Recently, I found Hannah Martin, 44, living in Warren County, Washington Township, Ohio in 1850 with her family. There was no husband so either he died prior to 1850 or they got a divorce. Hannah was born in New Jersey and had a 16 year old son named Constine. The census reads: Isaac Smith 28 M Farmer born Ohio Rhoda Smith 22 F born Ohio Hannah Smith 5 F born Ohio Theodore Smith 2 M born Ohio Harriet E. Smith 4/12 F born Ohio Hannah Martin 44 F born New Jersey Constine Martin 16 M laborer born Ohio Charles Martin 13 M born Ohio ______(can't read) Martin 11 M born Ohio Mary Martin 9 F born Ohio [I feel Rhoda Smith must be the daughter of Hannah Martin, since they are living in the same household and she named her first daughter, Hannah.] Does anyone know about early marriages in Hamilton County, Ohio sometime around 1827? I am looking for a man named Martin who married a woman named Hannah. I am also looking for the marriage of Isaac Smith to Rhoda Martin around 1844.... Would sincerely appreciate any help on the above. Juvanne Martin Nampa, Idaho

    3. Hamilton Co. has had several court house fires (4 up through the last in 1884). We have lot's of "missing records" but we have also a dedicated group of people, for the most part connected through the Hamilton County Chapter of Ohio Genealogical Society (http://members.aol.com/ogshc/index.htm) over the years who have spent a great many hours compiling information from other sources (church, cemetery, and yes, court house records) & publishing those in book form. These are ALL copyrighted & thus they can't be found and/or reproduced on the internet. Yes, that makes it hard for our out of town researchers to find things, but, I also think we have a dedicated group of individuals here on the list who go beyond the call with help for people seeking information. We also have a list of volunteers on the Hamilton Co. OHGenWeb site to do LOOK-UPS (http://www.rootsweb.com/~ohhamilt/lookups.html) & always seeking new volunteers who own or have access to specific publications. Otherwise, one must buy the book to have access to the information. I am in the middle of working on a page for the Hamilton Co OHGenWeb site (http://www.rootsweb.com/~ohhamilt/mnpg.html), it will probably take me a few days to get in online, but, I have found 3-4 places to purchase books & am as well trying to list out of print books which contain info. Will let you know when it is online & ready for additions/corrections. I guess my point is (& I may have sounded a bit rough last night), but there is information out there, it may not all be free & found on the internet, nor can it be because of copyright. My hope with the new page I am setting up is to let you know what has been published & where/if you can still find it to buy. Beyond that, it is up to some "kind soul" who will take the time to check for information in copies they own of the published resources. 3. About marriages. Kenny Burck, president of the Hamilton County Chapter, OGS, is indexing marriage records beginning after the courthouse fires. The first of these, from 1885-1889, has been published and more will follow soon. These records came from Probate Court Marriage Licenses & Returns, Probate Court Catholic Marriage Banns, and Old St. Mary's Catholic Church Marriage Records. He also lists justices of the peace, ministers, priests, rabbis, elders, mayors, or others who performed marriages in this county during this time period along with their location and/or church affiliation. Any additional questions I can refer to him as I will see him tomorrow evening (Thursday evening). 3. I'll try to answer everything in this message. I am the publications director for the Hamilton Co. Chap. OGS, I research my own family in Hamilton County, but also publish books (an outgrowth of my own research). I don't want to jeopardize my standing on this list by advertising, but do like to let you know when something comes up that will help with your research, so if the webmaster for this site will allow this to go through, I'll give my Web site address www.littlemiamibooks.com so you can find this book under Hamilton County books in the drop down menu. There are more than 20 different types of records that Bill Graver lists here (power of attorney documents, veterans' discharge documents, cemetery lot doc. & maps, doc. in miscellaneous books, to will excerpts, welfare : aid-for-the-aged lien doc., deeds, leases, registered land, mortgages, mechanic liens, releases, organization papers of churches, clubs, businesses, etc., partnership doc. and names, unemployment compensation liens, liens from gov. agencies, financing statements, maps, sundries (by-name) indexes, and other resources such as directories, census, surveys, maps, auditor, and recorders). He also provides a map of the floor and location as to where you can find these indexes, he discusses street and number changes--when and where they occurred, info about maps, etc. Some of these are also in the Cincinnati Historical Society library and Blegen Library at Univ. of Cinci.-- an appendix will direct you to those. The cost is $29.50 and even local attorneys have found this guide useful. I'm not sure about staff lookups, but I know some local researchers who could do the work for you for a reasonable price if you like, or there may be someone on this list who could provide that service. This is truly an untapped source by many people. 2. In a message dated 6/13/2005 1:01:19 P.M. Eastern Standard Time, lboorom@fuse.net writes: John, I don't recall there being a distinction between the books at the courthouse. But, I have often wondered if there is a list of what was lost with each fire & what was able to be restored after. There were several fires, I don't recall exactly the years of all, but 4 in all, 1st b/f 1800, 2nd ca 1814 when the courthouse was used as a barracks during the war, 3rd 1848/49 & last in 1884. We are told that following each fire the county basically salvaged what they could into new books I presume & also advertised for people to resubmit info to be "restored" and/or I guess this was done if the need arose, say perhaps following a death & the need arose to prove a relationship. If people moved away, had died or had no other reason to have their marriage record re-recorded, it's likely they didn't bother. Hence the reason for so many gaps in our records up through the last fire in 1884. But, back to the distinction between the books. I don't know if this will help, but I have posted a page to the Hamilton Co. OHGenWeb site which refers to the microfilm that LDS has of Hamilton Co. Marriage records: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ohhamilt/marrbatch.html LDS description includes "Original", Restored A, Restored B, & Restored C. As I said, I don't recall their being a distinction between the books when I've been at the courthouse, but I also have to admit that I've mostly gone after copies for records say before 1850 which fall into the Restored A catagory & more recently for copies of later records after the 1884 fire. I will say that I've noticed by searching LDS with the batch #'s I've listed that is seemed with some of the restored records or maybe it was the single searchable batch under section C (1893-1903) that the marriages actually occured before the 1884 fire so perhaps were restored in 1893-1903 period. At some point I have thought about checking into this, I'd be curious if there was a record or something of when it was "restored", which who knows what valuable information one might glean from that if the courts required proof of some sort :-) Afraid this isn't much help, but if I find anything more conclusive I'll post it. If anyone else has something to add, please do. Linda Boorom Hamilton Co. OHGenWeb co-CC Does any library in Cincinnati have these microfilms (or other copies of the "restored" records), or are they only available through LDS or at the courthouse? Wilson DeCamp

    3. I purchased this book before my trip to Cincinnati last year and it was very helpful being briefed before hand. I might have been overwhelmed had I arrived without any knowledge. There are about 80-100 machines and stacks of film, a lot of title searching going on. When I ran into trouble trying to figure something out the title searchers were helpful. Although the posted opening is 8:00 A.M. I believe they open at 6:30. By 8 AM there were few machines available. Another book that was a great help was "A Guide to Genealogical Resources in Cincinnati" 4th edition. Having studied both books a few weeks before I arrived help cut down on wasted time.
