    3. Hi LeeAnn, I don't believe this is one of my Flanagans though had to ask. Many of my family both maternal and maternal migrated to the tri-state area at least for periods of their life. My grandparents eloped and married in Northern Kentucky and they lived in Cinci for some time. I have some letters scanned and on my webpage that my grandfather and grandmother wrote back home. Kind if nice for one to have that insight into my grandparents minds and thoughts. I appreciate your response. Although this doesn't appear to be one of mine, one never knows. :) Slan, Granuaile -- "Knowledge is the best cure for the poison of ignorance" Granuaile Lythande O'Flanagan gflanagan@adelphia.net Web Page: http://flanaganfamily.org DNA Project Page: http://dna.flanaganfamily.org DNA Project Results: http://flanaganfamily.org/FlanaganHaplotypes.html Yahoo SN: transgendered40351 ---- miriam <mcnabbuc@netzero.net> wrote: ============= Hello. 3. To add to this, after 1913 the Ohio Historical Society has a search engine for 1913-1937 online: http://www.ohiohistory.org/dindex/ The $6.00 isn't the "research" fee, but the copy fee. That was raised 2 years or so ago from $1.00 when the Ohio budget past cutting back their funding AND eliminating genealogical copies and raising the fees on certified copies. To "research" I believe the fee is higher. The last word I had some time ago from the library in downtown Cincinnati when they first obtained the death certificate microfilm from the Historical Society is that they had no plans to respond for requests of copies. With cut backs at the library recently, I doubt that policy has changed. But, there are a lot of "kind souls" on this list and perhaps with given the exact information from the search at the Historical Society someone when at the library may do a look-up for you. As yet, I've not heard via this list or the Hamilton Co. OHGenWeb page (http://www.rootsweb.com/~ohhamilt/mnpg.html) that anyone is willing to commit to do this on a regular basis. 3. Nancy, When did your GGrandfather die, and where did he die. North College Hill is a city/municipality in it's own right. It actually borders the city limits of Cincinnati. 3. Hello! I hope everyone is doing well! It's been a while since I've written. I've been busy with travelling and doing family history research. I have made several updates to my PAF file and wanted to share with everyone the new list of Tri-State surnames that are included in it. Note that some of the names may just have one individual associated with them at this time, but some of them have quite a good deal of information. Abeln, Amend, Arnold, Bauer, Baus, Bergin, Bode, Borges, Bosterman, Brames, Brink, Brueckmann, Bubenhofer, Burkhart, Busse, Calvert, Campbell, Castellini, Connor, Copenhaver, Dean, Dedden, Dressman, Duncan, Ferrari, Flanagan, Funke, Geldreich, Gohs, Grollig, Gruey, Gulden, Hackman, Hauser, Heman, Hesslar, Heving/Hewing, Hoffman, Hughes, Hussey, Kallmeyer, Katzenstein, Keating, Meyer, Middendorf, Morgan, Muench, Nagel, Osner, Prell, Prieshoff, Rauen, Rosenfelder, Rowekamp/Rowenkamp, Rusin, Schlinkert, Schriber, Schroth, Schulte, Schwain/Schwein, Spiesz, Sprengelmeyer, Steffen, Stoll, Sutter, Tennison, Tolken, Tunney, Voegele, Volpenhein, Willinger, Wilmhoff, and Wirthlin. Also, looking for any Deters researchers - attempting to make the link between Bernard Deters with Adelheid Hewing and my Hewings. Please feel free to contact me off list (so we don't clog the list up with emails). Thanks! LeeAnn McNabb Cincinnati, Ohio

    3. John and all, Just talked to Kenny Burck, Hamilton County Chapter president, who is working on a revision of the Guide that you referred to. Guess this will be a 5th edition. 1) First of all, The Reading, Ohio, records have been sent to Ham.Co. General Health District at 250 Wm. Howard Taft Rd. Address/phone in the book. 2) Mutually exclusive or overlap? Kenny says you can never be sure of anything and best to check all sources. Sometimes they registered twice. 3) Why not all in one place? It was a great distance to travel by buggy so they likely went to the nearest town and all of these places were their own towns back then. 4) City records at Blegen. Be sure to call ahead and let them know you are coming in from out of town and when you will be there so they can have the records available for you. 5) The Cincinnati library is acquiring (if they have not already done so) death records that extend to 1953 with an index to 1954. 6) Were many birth and death records destroyed in the various fires? Don't know if they had them there or not before 1891. Guess they burned if they did. 7) Don't forget to always check Jeff (Herbert) and Kenny's(Burck) indexes before beginning. 8) Plus here is an item that Kenny found at the OGS library while there recently. A book by Paul Immel and Carol Montrose called Cincinnati Mirror & Ladies' Parterre, 1831-1833 Abstracts of Marriages, Obituaries & Miscellanea. This is a paper book of about 25 pp. No price is given but order by contacting Carol Montrose, 7421 Central College Rd., New Albany, OH 43054. Sounds like another good replacement for lost records. I love newspaper indexes and abstracts for that reason. Also, hope I'm not getting too long, but Kenny Burck has just listed himself as a researcher on the Hamilton County Chapter Web site. He will actually pick you up, get a room for you (you could probably even stay with him!) spend the day with you, take you to cemeteries, research facilities, etc., and even find a good restaurant for you. Sounds like a time saver. Other good researchers listed there as well. Check out the Researching page on the HCCOGS Web site. Hope these help. Barbara

    3. Barbara, Would you or anyone have any idea where the birth, marriage and death records would be today for those who lived in the New Baltimore/New Haven area in Crosby Township? I don't think they had a courthouse of any kind in that area to file records. 1. Re: [OH-HAMILT] Hamilton Co Death Records
    2. Linda Boorom
    3. The death is recorded where the death occurred, if in the cities of Cincinnati, Norwood, Reading or St. Bernard, it is recorded in that city. If it occurred out side of any of the above mentioned cities but within Hamilton Co., then Hamilton Co. will record the death. I'm not certain what the Probate court records exactly exist of, so it's possible there could be some overlaps in those records. You have to also remember that someone may not have died where they lived, for example St. Bernard, but died in a hospital within the city of Cincinnati & so the death would be recorded in Cincinnati, not St. Bernard. Note that death records previous to 1909 for the City of Cincinnati are now located at the University of Cincinnati's Blegen Library. Also note, you need an appointment at both the city of Cincinnati & the Hamilton Co., Bd. of Health to search the records, I'm not sure about the other cities. To check for more details, I have links to the appropriate websites here; http://www.rootsweb.com/~ohhamilt/cresources.html#Vitals As to the fires, the last one occurred in 1884, but the law to record deaths for everyone wasn't until 1908. My experience with the records previous to 1908 is that they were filled out by a doctor or sometimes a midwife in the case of births. The event was not recorded for people who were born or died at home without a doctor in attendance . Hope this helps? 1. back from Cincinnati - with two questions
    2. Blais
    3. Hi Everyone - I had a great time in Cincinnati, though I didn't get as much info as I had hoped, but the trip was well worth it. We spent a good deal of time finding (or attempting to find) places that my grandmother remembered from her youth. Almost all of the houses and businesses that she remembered were gone, but we took copious pictures of those that remained. The "crown jewel" for my grandmother was seeing the house that my gg-grandfather built in Bond Hill in 1927 for my grandmother and her parents to live in. While at Spring Grove (wow!) I noticed that one side of my family had what looked like German Iron Crosses engraved into their headstones. Can anyone give me any information about this practice? Though the family was German by heritage, they were not German war veterans and the insignia is on all of the graves, regardless of the date of burial (the graves range from 1881 to 1965) and the gender of the person buried. Maybe there was a local fraternal group whose practice it was to put the crosses on their headstone? Also, if someone were an inmate at the age of 22 at "Our Lady of the Woods" in Springfield township on the 1900 census, what would that mean - maybe they were destitute? Thanks very much! Chaille
