    3. I just joined Ancestry 2 weeks ago, and though it was steep, this is my hobby and fun. No bowling or other expensive hobbies, and it keeps me out of trouble !! I bet they fear their profits will either come down or disappear as more sites put genealogy data on the net for free. The census project is doing a fine job. Can't wait for it to be complete. http://www.us-census.org/ Cece

    2. Hi Barbara, On ancestry's main page, Line 1, type in either the first & last name of a specific person or you can also just type in a surname without any first names; on line 2 click United States in the "All Countries" drop down menu, then click the state you want or you can leave it at "All States", then click "Search". When the next page opens, look under the heading Birth, Marriage & Death Records. Marilyn ------------------original message------------------- In a message dated 8/16/2005 8:59:19 P.M. 1. Re: [OH-HAMILT] Ancestry library resource
    2. Yes; All responses so far have been correct, as far as I know. Having served on our local county library advisory board for a while, I am aware the cost of providing Ancestry and other such database services to the public can be quite expensive. It is hundreds of times more in cost than an individual basic subscription for one year. But the benefits come for the library when more people begin to use their facilities in order to access the use of those databases. And I'm sure the expense will not seem warranted if the "hits" on those resources start dropping in number. Our library system here in Osceola County Florida has been extremely receptive to us in the genealogy community for the past few years, and we show our gratitude by donating volunteer time, publications, microfilm, etc. to the collection. We can access all from library facility computers, including Ancestry. However, we can also use some of the resources from home, such as HeritageQuest, American obituaries and newspapers, and other general informational options. Bottom line, I guess, is we all need to really investigate just what is available to us not only from the LDS family history centers and main library, but also the public libraries and possibly also some private ones. I'm always surprised when someone indicates on a very popular mailing list (like this one) that there is "nothing" to help them. Perhaps they just haven't looked real well. Ann

Our LDS library does have Ancestry.com (thank goodness!! I can't afford it for myself) but the Public Library does not, and even if it did, our little library only has about ten computers available and they are all in use all the time! I have wondered about it because there is never a computer avail. But thank you for reminding us of the Public library option. We (as individuals) just need to call our public library and the local LDS library in our area to find out which, if either, offer this great service. Thanks to all the libraries who do help the public in this way. I have heard that Ancestry.com is not happy about it being accessed by so many of the public for the cost of one, but otherwise their services would not be available to those of us (families) who have both parents working and are supporting a family and cannot afford the luxury of Ancestry.com in our home, especially considering that parents of young ones like myself often do not have the time to get the most use out of a subscription. Yes, it is inconvenient to have to wait till our LDS library is open (they have limited hours) but at least I can get into Ancestry.com and I am grateful for that. I am also deeply grateful to all on this mailing list and others who take the time and effort to help those of us who are limited access to records and who live so very far away from our ancestor's residences! I do try to return the favor by helping those who are researching ancestors in the Bozeman, MT area. Family history researchers are such a kind bunch! Thanks to all, Donna in MT

    1. Ancestry library resource
    2. Hi; I believe I've seen mention of this subject on both addressed mailing lists, so am sending the same message to all. It is true that you may be able to use Ancestry.com or AncestryPlus or Ancestry's Library edition through an LDS family history center near you - and if you have one you are very fortunate. However, many public libraries also have access to one of those. Ancestry is not available from your home computer, however, unless you have a privately paid subscription. If you have a public library card, by all means, check your local library's availability. Even if you have to go into a branch facility to access Ancestry, it's well worth a trip! Best wishes, Ann Bergelt Florida

    3. I believe that libraries and other similar entities such as schools who share a database (for example, Ancestry.com) with multiple users pay a much higher price for the service than do individuals. I'm sure that the cost depends on the size of the institution using the database. Just another reason to support our libraries; and if there was ever a library worth supporting it is the Cincinnati main library. Fantastic genealogy resources there!
