    2. M Hess, The earliest I find a BOCKHORST in Hamilton County is in 1850 census records but no Anna or Catherine is listed: Gerrard Bockhorst, Cincinnati Ward 9, Hamilton Co., OH b. abt. 1822 Germany Mary Bockhorst, Cincinnati Ward 9, Hamilton Co., OH, b. abt. 1822 Germany The first Anna BOCKHORST that shows up is in the 1870 MO census The first I find a Catherine BOCKHORST is in the 1860 MO census in St. Louis. She's age 25, born 1834 in Hanover, Germany. In the 1900 census there's an Anna BOCKHORST in Cincinnati, but the index says she's born 1882 in Ohio. 3. Selected Hamilton County, Ohio, Church Baptism Records, 1870-1879 by Jeffrey Herbert is Vol. 3 which the library has listed simply as "Selected Hamilton County, Ohio, church baptism records" in the index. The library does have Vol. 3 listed so they do have it. Little Miami Publishing has it listed as new, so it must be recent. If you have trouble finding it in the catalogue by the title try searching for the author Jeffrey Herbert. Hi Mark, My genealogist found the record in the index of a court book in Champaign County, Ohio, but the clerk wouldn't let her see it. I have no idea what is in it or what happened. You could try to find a court "lunacy" record at the courthouses in Hamilton Co., Ohio and over the river in Kentucky. Has anyone heard of a "lunacy" record? I'm so curious about this I can't stand it! By the way, I did find the death certificate and one-line obit for this ancestor: He committed suicide at his home. I wonder if all suicides had a court "lunacy" record? Maybe that is what the record contains. The genealogist did not give me the date of the record, but my ancestor died in 1884. Sincerely, Susan E. 2. Susan, I recall that someone on this list got medical records from the Ohio Historical Society for a relative who was confined to Longview State Hospital as a mental patient years ago. Perhaps there's a difference as to whether you can get the records from the court or from the mental hospital? You might try contacting the Ohio Historical Society to find out. They might be able to also give you information about the adoption records. www.ohiohistory.org Marilyn ------------original message----------------- In a message dated 8/22/2005 2:12:43 P.M. 2. Hi, Whoops, I made a mistake with the lunacy record -- that record is in Champaign County, Ohio. My genealogist actually found that record but the clerk (common pleas, probate, I think) told her that she couldn't see it because all lunacy records in Ohio are sealed forever -- so this would still apply to Hamilton Co., Ohio, too. I've tried to find out, but no one but that clerk holding the record seems to know. Does anyone know where I could find out for sure? I have two adoption records to find. One is in Hamilton Co., OH and one is in Preble Co., Ohio (I think) -- I really didn't get very far because I talked to a librarian in Preble County and she said adoption records in Ohio are sealed forever. Is this true? I also am trying to obtain a 1921 birth certificate from Hamilton Co., Ohio. I was told that the only people that can get it are the children of the person, the parents, or the spouse. My mother could sign for it because the deceased individual was her sister, or I could sign for it because I was her niece, but there are no children, parents, or spouses to sign for it. Is it true that only the parents, spouse, or children of a person can sign for a 1921 birth certificate? As you can see, I'm having problems obtaining records. I just would like to know for sure that these clerks have the right information. Please help me if you can. Thanks! Susan

I visit the offices when I need things and there is a very small fee for photocopying but I am sure they could also respond by fax or snail mail (for a fee) to service out of town people. 2. Hi, Interesting question, and I'm looking forward to someone having an answer. However, the 1881 date would seem to belong to those records, if recorded in Hamilton County, that would have been destroyed in the 1884 courthouse fire (unless, like the marriages, they were somehow "restored"). What court would have been in charge of adoption and lunacy? Probate? Family Court (if they had that designation then)? There may be some mention in the court minutes. Ann Bergelt Florida
