    1. [OHHAMILT] Witt, Good & Kelsch funeral home
    2. Colin Roth
    3. Hello Teri! Thank you for the idea of contacting the Witt, Good & Kelsch funeral home. I noticed there appears to be two locations, one at 7312 Beechmont Ave. and the other at 3026 Madison Road. If I had to make an educated guess, I figure Stella Donnelly's wake was at 3026 Madison Rd. considering this location is only about two blocks away from where Stella lived. This is of course considering if the Madison Rd. location existed in 1953. This might be a silly question, but what sort of records do you think the funeral home may have that I could inquire about? There is something else that I just remembered about which would be helpful. I know that some cemeteries offer a "registration of heirs" document for specific burial plots. I am wondering if anyone here from previous experience knows if the St. Joseph Cemetery in Cincinnati offers such "registration of heirs" documents? Thanks again! I am sorry I can't give you the addy I recentally lost my address book and am in the process of rebuilding it. Teri In a message dated 1/28/2008 5:13:18 PM Eastern Standard Time, [email protected] writes: Hello Everyone, I am looking to see if there may be anyone reading this message who may have a connection to the family of Matthew Donnelly and Stella Burkhardt who lived in Cincinnati. The children of Matthew Donnelly (born about 1861 - died 04 Jun 1913, Cincinnati) and Stella Burkhardt (born 17 Jun 1879 - died 15 Nov 1953, Cincinnati) who were married about the year 1904 are: 1. Joseph Bartholomew Donnelly (born 25 Aug 1904, Cincinnati - died 13 Oct 1981, Sacramento, California) 2. Mary Donnelly (born about 1909, Cincinnati - died ?) At the moment, I only know that Mary Donnelly married a certain Charles Cole (born about 1907, Indiana - died ?) around the year 1927. The 1930 Cincinnati census indicates that Charles and Mary had at least one child, a certain Ruth Cole born about 1928. Based upon Stella Donnelly's obituary which I am going to include below, there were at least three other grandchildren of Matthew and Stella Donnelly whom are currently unknown at the present time. I would like to see if there are any potential living descendants or relatives of the Donnelly or Cole families. Matthew Donnelly's sister, a certain Sallie G. Donnelly was married to my great grand uncle Bartholomew Fanning who was also a Captain in the Cincinnati Fire Department. I just have two quick questions before I end this message. I am familiar with the St. Joseph New Cemetery burial records, but are there burial records available for the old St. Joseph Cemetery? I am curious to know if anyone may have quick access to the 1900 Williams' Cincinnati directory? I am having difficulty tracking down Matthew Donnelly in the 1900 census record for Cincinnati, and hoping that the 1900 directory may list a street address for him. Below I shall include some transcriptions I made from Stella Donnelly's obituary and article on Captain Matthew Donnelly. Thanks!!Colin Cincinnati Enquirer, November 17, 1953 Mrs. Stella G. Donnelly Requiem High Mass for Mrs. Stella G. Donnelly, widow of Matthew F. Donnelly, former captain in the Cincinnati Fire Department, will be sung at 9 a.m. tomorrow in St. Cecilia Church. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Eighth St. and Enright Ave. Friends may call after 4 p.m. today at the Witt, Good & Kelsch funeral home. Mrs. Donnelly, who was 74 years old, died Sunday night at her home, 2929 Minot Ave., Oakley, following a heart attack. She was a member of St. Cecilia Church and of the Fire Department's Ladies Auxiliary. She is survived by a son, Joe B. Donnelly, Wyoming, Ohio, director of industrial relations for the Schenley Industries; a daughter, Mrs. Mary Cole, of the Oakley address; three sisters, Mrs. Mamie Zanone, Mrs. Retta Himsel and Miss Katherine Burkhardt, all of Cincinnati; a brother Charles Burkhardt, also Cincinnati, and four grandchildren. Cincinnati Times Star, June 4, 1913 Last Call To Fire Captain Came Suddenly Well Known Man Was Stricken While on Duty - Was Inspecting Garage When He Became Sick - Died Within Few Minutes After Being Taken Home. Apparently in splendid health, a powerful, robust-appearing man, Capt. Matthew Donnelly of the Cincinnati Fire department, was stricken suddenly Wednesday morning and in a few minutes he was dead. Captain Donnelly had gone from his post of duty, Engine Company 27 in Clifton, to Vine and Mulberry streets, to inspect the fire prevention equipment of a garage. He was making the rounds of the garage when he sank to a chair, saying he felt ill. He was taken to the 19's house on Upper Vine street. Almost immediately he became unconscious. District Fire Marshal Burk was summoned. The marshal hastened in his auto to Donnelly's residence on Clifton avenue, and physicians were summoned, but Donnelly expired soon after he was carried into his home not having regained consciousness. Dr. Arch Carson who was called to attend the stricken fire captain reported the case to Coroner Foertmeyer. It is said Donnelly had recently been complaining about heart trouble. "Matty" Donnelly was 52 years of age and leaves a widow and two children. He became a member of the fire department in 1888, was promoted to lieutenant in 1902 and became a captain in 1908. He was considered a very capable fireman. _________________________________________________________________ Helping your favorite cause is as easy as instant messaging. 3. Colin, Hi. No. Old St Joseph does NOT have online records. There are some on microfilm at the Public Library of Cincinnati & Hamilton County. Those are listed alphabetically by last name. I believe you can email them for that information. Or write the cemetery. 3. Ohio Wills and Estates to 1850 catalogs many different sources in addition to the Wills that now reside at Blegen Library. A complete list of sources used for each county is at the beginning of the book. Ohio Wills and Estates includes references to both testate (with wills) and intestate (without wills) estate settlements. If there is a W before the year in the listing (W-1819), then there is a will and the will should be in both the courthouse will book and a copy of the original will at Blegen Library. If there is a E before the year (E-1819), then there was no will. The book also includes references for estates whose courthouse records were destroyed in the courthouse fires. If the A is preceded by a c, (cA793), then there may be no courthouse record remaining. The cA number refers to Estate Records from the Minn. Title Co. that are at the Cincinnati Historical Society. Bell states "7 Volumes give names of decedents, date of probate, type of record, case number and will record. The case # bears no relationship to any court-assigned case no. . . . There is no further data to be obtained from these case numbers and it should be noted that the Title Co. Records are highly accurate as to names when compared to extant will records." I followed up at the Cincinnati Historical Society and learned that the Minnesota Title Company books are sealed records since they contain adoption information. They are not available to the public without a court order. Very few estate records remain for the time period you are researching. Those that remain are scant on details. The will books mentioned previously might help you if there was a will. A few others you might want to consult in are: 1) Abstract of Book 1 & Book A Probate Record 1791-1826, Hamilton County. This book is available on ancestry.com and has several listings for John Brooks. 2) Abstract of Book 3, Probate Record 1829-1834, Hamilton County. 3) Abstract of Book 4, Probate Record 1834-1837, Hamilton County. 3) Family History Library Film 0910233 contains the administration index for 1790-1850 for Surnames beginning with A-G only. 4) I doubt you will find inventory records from this early date but a few restored inventories from 1809-1883 are found in the courthouse inventory books IRR 131-135. These are available on microfilm at the Public Library of Cincinnati (PLCH 929.377177 H222). All original inventories prior to 1971 were destroyed. 5) Administration and Guardian Appointments, 1791-1847 (index only), FHL Film 2209060, Items 2-3. The original ledger books abstracted in the Abstract books listed above are available on microfilm at the Cincinnati Public Library cataloged as 1791-1826, 1829-1834 Misc. Ledger Books, PLCH 929.377177 H222p 1970. I checked some of the original listings against the abstracts and found no omitted information. However, I did find one of my ancestors in the self-indexed ledger book that was not in the Abstract book. No estate was identified in the listing so perhaps that is why it was omitted from the Abstract book. I have been collecting probate records for 22 individuals who died 1816-1893 and left some probate record. The data prior to 1852 is extremely limited and only slightly better 1852-1884. I've expanded my search to probate-related land sales! You are probably more likely to learn more from the deed records. I've attached a summary of my probate record search for Thomas Morehouse who d. 1823 leaving very scant records in Hamilton County. I thought you might like to get an idea of what you might find. Good luck! Liz

    3. Have you had a response from the Blegen Library? Did they say they did not have the wills you are seeking? If not at the Blegen Library, perhaps the data was in a list made at a given time, but the actual material could have been lost or misfiled. It may be necessary to make a visit to the Blegen Library to verify that the wills are not there. Every once in a while we read that official material turns up in some governmental office or archive, lost and unknown for many years. Good luck.

The records were: George Hudson 1834 A 3638 John Brooks 1819 A 793 Sarah Brooks 1830 A 802 Any idea where these records are? Thank you for your help. 3. Hello Genealogy Friends. I'm not sure I made myself clear in my first post regarding the book "Ohio Wills and Estates to 1850" by Carol W. Bell. I have seen the book at a library and copied down several estates from the index.....I am asking where the estate records would be kept in Hamilton County for the period between 1797 and 1834. I have written to the Biegen Library and also Hamilton County. I feel these records must be somewhere or how did they extract them for this index. I am not familiar with where things are in Hamilton County and appreciate your help. Thank you, Stephanie in Oregon -- Want an e-mail address like mine? 1. [OHHAMILT] Researching William Thomas McLean
    2. Joanne Gregory
    3. I am seeking information on William Thomas McLean, born 17July1859 in Canada. He married Sarah Pardee 14Nov1912 in CT. He was an oral surgeon in Cincinnati, having graduated from the Ohio College of Dental Surgery in 1889. He later held a chair at one of the universities, the story being Ohio State but when I contacted them they had no one by his name in their list of previous professors. Possibly he was at Univ. of Cincinnati. I have found a William T. McLean, dentist, 92 W. 7th, in the 1890 Cincinnati City Directory. According to the 1900 census, there is a William McLean, dentist, on Locust St., born Mar 1859 Canada, immigrated 1879, 21 years naturalized, married 18 years (that would be abt. 1882) to Mary A. born June 1859, Denmark, 3 children born and 1 living, and son Jewel born Apr. 1894 age 6. According the the Ohio Physician & Dentist Directory 1905, there is a W.T. McLean, dentist, Cincinnati, Ohio. The family story is that he was attending a dental conference in New Haven, CT and met Sarah Pardee. They fell in love, he moved to CT and they were married. They are my mother in law's parents and there is no history of him ever being married previously even though he was 52 when they married. The more I research, the more it appears that he was married and had a son. Unless there were 2 dentists by the same name in Cincinnati at the same time, both born the same year in Canada. The other items I have been able to find online are the 1910 census, in which Mary age 58, married 28 years, and son Julius age 16 are on Montieth Ave. She does list herself as married but no husband is listed on the census. I have the WW1 draft registration card for Jules Townsly McLean, listing mother and wife but not listing father. In the 1920 census, Mary is listed as a widow born 1851. I found the death certificate for Mary McLean born 18Mar 1851 in Denmark, widowed, husband was William. She committed suicide 22Feb 1927 in Cincinnati. The informant for the certificate was someone other than her son, so the personal information is not necessarily correct. Buried in Vine Street Hill. I found the death certificate for Jules T. McLean, born 01Feb 1984 and died 19 Aug 1937 in Cincinnati. He was divorced and a Dr. of Chiropractic. Father was listed as William G. McLean and mother as Mary Iverson. Buried in Vine Street Cemetery. As with his mother, the informant for the death certificate was not a family member so the information was not necessarily correct. How can I find out if there was a divorce between 1900 and 1912, or probably more likely between 1910 and 1912? Is there a way to find out what dentists were practicing in Cincinnati in the late 1800s through 1910? How about birth records for 1894 or marriage records between 1910 and 1917? This has become a real family mystery. I think I will have to come to Cincinnati at some point to do research but any help you all can give me will be appreciated. Joanne
