    1. [OHHAMILT] Civil War Orphans
    2. MFederle
    3. My great grandmother, Artie Phillips, was born in 1862 (according to tombstone). In the 1870 census she is living with what looks to be an unrelated family (Walden). There is also a census listing for a boy who might be her twin, and who is living with a different and probably unrelated family (Pendrey). The post office for both is Sedamsville. There is a record of both children being baptised in the Presbyterian Church, although I'm embarassed to say I can't find the record at the moment, but I believe it was in 1867. Since this was shortly after the end of the civil war, I am wondering if they were casualties of that event, and if so, what type of records might have been kept for placing children in foster homes. Since they were both baptised in the same church at the same time, and since that was after the end of the war, I really think they were twins. I have been unable to find either of them in 1880, and I don't know whatever happened to Henry. Thanks for any input. Martha Federle

    3. Hello Martha, I have an ancestor who died during the Civil War and I was able to get the complete file from the National Archives. It listed his widow, their children and birth dates. What a wealth of information for $1. (this was in the 1960s) Try checking for a civil war record for the father, I know there are some books available listing Civil War soldiers in Ohio. Try checking on the Civil War mail list at rootsweb, also. 3. Hi. Sure does. The part of the Hamilton County Genealogy site has the year, but not the page and date. That index that is both at the downtown library and Green Twp branch has that info. Once you have that, you can easily get the page from downtown library. I believe that they also do the search without the exact date but it is much faster if you have the page. 1. [OHHAMILT] Old German newspapers at the Cincinnati Public Library
    2. Colin Roth
    3. Hello Everyone, I am curious to know if my thinking is correct on the following. It sounds like the Cincinnati Public Library has in its collection on microfilm the following old German newspapers, "The Cincinnati Freie Presse, 1874-1920" and "Cincinnatier Zeitung, 1887-1901". From the Hamilton County Genealogical Society web site I found three specific death notices of interest in the "Cincinnati newspaper death notice name indexes" database. From what I read on the HCGS web site, it sounds like the Cincinnati Public Library has the following books, "Index of death lists appearing in the Cincinnatier Zeitung, 1887-1901 - Call #: 929.377178 qC57412Zh" and " Index of death and other notices appearing in Cincinnati Freie Presse, 1874-1920 - Call #: 929.377178 qC5743Zh". From these two books it sounds like one should be able to find the exact newspaper page number and date of notice for the desired death notice of interest. Would I be correct in thinking that once one obtains the newspaper page number and date of notice that one can then get in contact with the Magazines and Newspapers Department of the library and place a photocopy request for death notices from the "Cincinnatier Zeitung" and "The Cincinnati Freie Presse" microfilms? Thank again for any answers!Colin _________________________________________________________________ Connect and share in new ways with Windows Live. http://www.windowslive.com/share.html?ocid=TXT_TAGHM_Wave2_sharelife_012008

    1. [OHHAMILT] Hillside Chapel...a cemetery?
    2. Hello List Members and Marilyn, Marilyn, seems like I read where you said that some of your relatives are buried at: HILLSIDE CHAPEL 525 Martin Luther King Drive, Cincinnati. (also location of the Cincinnati Cremation Co.). Is Hillside Chapel a cemetery? That sounds sooooo dumb. I mean, if you have relatives buried there it must be a cemetery; but I can't find any references to it on all the cemetery lists. Also, does anyone have a photo of Hillside Chapel that you could scan to me? Thanks, Deborah : **************Biggest Grammy Award surprises of all time on AOL Music. 3. Hello All. I did get some answers from the Cincinnati Historical Society Library. And was able to order some of the records I wanted. I first started trying to find records in 1989!! But keep in mind I live in Oregon; here are some exerpts from the email in hopes it will be helpful to someone on the list..... We do not have actual estate documents in the library. The reference you cite was created by an insurance company. They used many records to compile their data. This is explained in the front of the book under Hamilton Co. I found all of the Brooks ancestors in the abstract of probate records. After the 1884 court house fire, there were only a few pages of the packets that survived. These mostly deal with court actions such as appointment of administrators, appraisers, widow's allowances. They are very incomplete. Thank you to all who tried to help me with this!! Stephanie ----- Original Message ----- From: "Linda Boorom" To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [OHHAMILT] "Ohio Wills and Estates to 1850" Date: Thu, 31 Jan 2008 18:59:40 -0500 Barbara, As far as I'm aware, wills are recorded in the will books are in Hamilton Co. Probate (someday to be online???), the Blegin Library has copies of many older wills (before they were recorded in the will books?), but the post was regarding "Estate" records. Here is a portion of my older notes regarding my husband's ancestor Jesse Boram/Booram: DEATH: book titled OHIO WILLS & ESTATES TO 1850 H.C.P.L. call # R929.3771qB433W shows Jesse Booram on page 36 indicating that he died intestate (w/o will) Estate filed? 1847 and the books source is shown as # cA634. I checked into this with the Court House first (Millie had no idea what these #s were) and the Cincinnati Historical Society next. I was told that these are the numbers used by the Minnesota Title Company, to which they have their records, but, they are not public records and noone is allowed to see them. The book referenced above states the following in regards to the records used in Hamilton Co.: The intestate estate records have been listed from the Minnesota Title Company Records housed at the Cincinnati Historical society, Eden Park. These 7 volumes give names of decedents, date of probate, type of record, case number and will record. the case number bears no relationship to any court-assigned case number. It is given here in hopes that someday the extant probate files may be rearranged so that they may be used. There is no further data to be obtained from these case numbers, and it should be noted that the Title Company Records are highly accurate as to names, when compared with the extant will record. Many years ago, I spoke on the phone with someone who had helped to compile the records of estates from Hamilton Co. for this book. Supposedly the Minnesota Title Company Records were searched, mostly bonds for the estates and the individual I spoke with did not seem to think the actual records would give any additional information. >From what I recall being told, way back when, from the Cincinnati Historical Society, was that these records were actually considered private since they could include information on adoptions or other private issues. Didn't matter that they were 150 years old. Sad, since none of those indivuals or their children are living and there are so few Hamilton Co. estate records existing. In the case of Jesse Boram/Booram mentioned above, I know that he was dead by Oct. 7th 1845, as I have a receipt for the purchase of his coffin on that date by his wife. His father, Aaron Boram/Booram wrote a will shortly after Jesse's death on 11 Nov 1845 which was probated 10 Oct 1846. I have a copy from Probate as recorded in the will books & also a copy from the Blegin Library which included papers signed by his named executors refusing such & assignment of another administrator. I also have a copy of a summons to appear in court where various individuals were contesting Aaron's will (handed down the family) but because of the court house fires (or so I have been told) no record exists of this suit. The date of the admin. of Jesse's estate as given in the Ohio Wills & Estates book seems to coinside with the date of the lawsuit & as gleaned from Administration Book 1837-1847 in Probate, the same attorney involved with the Aaron Booram lawsuit, Henry Snow, was also the same indvidual granted administration of Jesse's estate in 1847. My guess at this time is that Jesse's estate had to be administered becasue of the lawsuit regarding his father's estate as Jesse obv. died 2 years previous. BUT, I've been unable to find out anything more............ The records were: George Hudson 1834 A 3638 John Brooks 1819 A 793 Sarah Brooks 1830 A 802 Any idea where these records are? Thank you for your help. Stephanie in Oregon

    3. Barbara, As far as I'm aware, wills are recorded in the will books are in Hamilton Co. 3. I hope I'm not too off base here, but according to the Hamilton County's Guide to Genealogical Resources in Cincinnati and Hamilton County (page 30), Index and Estate records are in the Probate Court Office in the William Howard Taft Center, 230 E. 9th St. (513-946-3551). Apparently they have all been copied there and will eventually be online. But for now you can view the the copies in that office. Also, I am told that the pages have been copied and are available at the Cincinnati Library downtown. So you may want to check with them as well. Also, index and will records are available there. And Bill Graver's Guide tells what indexes are available at the Recorder's Office for what years and samples of those indexes and types of information they will lead you to. Hope that helps. 3. The Hamilton Co. Genealogical Society has a Research Committee and a list of members who do research for a moderate fee. Refer to their website: hcgsohio.org for the details and form to request the Research Committee and also the list of Paid Researchers. If you do not live in Cincinnati, the above would be the most efficient method of finding the answers you seek on your families. The children of Matthew Donnelly (born about 1861 - died 04 Jun 1913, Cincinnati) and Stella Burkhardt (born 17 Jun 1879 - died 15 Nov 1953, Cincinnati) who were married about the year 1904 are: 1. Joseph Bartholomew Donnelly (born 25 Aug 1904, Cincinnati - died 13 Oct 1981, Sacramento, California) 2. Mary Donnelly (born about 1909, Cincinnati - died ?) At the moment, I only know that Mary Donnelly married a certain Charles Cole (born about 1907, Indiana - died ?) around the year 1927. The 1930 Cincinnati census indicates that Charles and Mary had at least one child, a certain Ruth Cole born about 1928. Based upon Stella Donnelly's obituary which I am going to include below, there were at least three other grandchildren of Matthew and Stella Donnelly whom are currently unknown at the present time. I would like to see if there are any potential living descendants or relatives of the Donnelly or Cole families. Matthew Donnelly's sister, a certain Sallie G. Donnelly was married to my great grand uncle Bartholomew Fanning who was also a Captain in the Cincinnati Fire Department. I just have two quick questions before I end this message. I am familiar with the St. Joseph New Cemetery burial records, but are there burial records available for the old St. Joseph Cemetery? I am curious to know if anyone may have quick access to the 1900 Williams' Cincinnati directory? I am having difficulty tracking down Matthew Donnelly in the 1900 census record for Cincinnati, and hoping that the 1900 directory may list a street address for him. Below I shall include some transcriptions I made from Stella Donnelly's obituary and article on Captain Matthew Donnelly. Thanks!!Colin Cincinnati Enquirer, November 17, 1953 Mrs. Stella G. Donnelly Requiem High Mass for Mrs. Stella G. Donnelly, widow of Matthew F. Donnelly, former captain in the Cincinnati Fire Department, will be sung at 9 a.m. tomorrow in St. Cecilia Church. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Eighth St. and Enright Ave. Friends may call after 4 p.m. today at the Witt, Good & Kelsch funeral home. Mrs. Donnelly, who was 74 years old, died Sunday night at her home, 2929 Minot Ave., Oakley, following a heart attack. She was a member of St. Cecilia Church and of the Fire Department's Ladies Auxiliary. She is survived by a son, Joe B. Donnelly, Wyoming, Ohio, director of industrial relations for the Schenley Industries; a daughter, Mrs. Mary Cole, of the Oakley address; three sisters, Mrs. Mamie Zanone, Mrs. Retta Himsel and Miss Katherine Burkhardt, all of Cincinnati; a brother Charles Burkhardt, also Cincinnati, and four grandchildren. Cincinnati Times Star, June 4, 1913 Last Call To Fire Captain Came Suddenly Well Known Man Was Stricken While on Duty - Was Inspecting Garage When He Became Sick - Died Within Few Minutes After Being Taken Home. Apparently in splendid health, a powerful, robust-appearing man, Capt. Matthew Donnelly of the Cincinnati Fire department, was stricken suddenly Wednesday morning and in a few minutes he was dead. Captain Donnelly had gone from his post of duty, Engine Company 27 in Clifton, to Vine and Mulberry streets, to inspect the fire prevention equipment of a garage. He was making the rounds of the garage when he sank to a chair, saying he felt ill. He was taken to the 19's house on Upper Vine street. Almost immediately he became unconscious. District Fire Marshal Burk was summoned. The marshal hastened in his auto to Donnelly's residence on Clifton avenue, and physicians were summoned, but Donnelly expired soon after he was carried into his home not having regained consciousness. Dr. Arch Carson who was called to attend the stricken fire captain reported the case to Coroner Foertmeyer. It is said Donnelly had recently been complaining about heart trouble. "Matty" Donnelly was 52 years of age and leaves a widow and two children. He became a member of the fire department in 1888, was promoted to lieutenant in 1902 and became a captain in 1908. He was considered a very capable fireman. _________________________________________________________________ Helping your favorite cause is as easy as instant messaging. You IM, we give. http://im.live.com/Messenger/IM/Home/?source=text_hotmail_join To contact the List Administrator, send an email to: [email protected] Did you miss a message? 3. Liz, Thank you for writing all of that out. A lot of good information. And something else to remind everyone about who wonders why they can't find what they're looking for: the Hamilton County courthouse burned down 2-3 times in the 19th century, the last time in 1884 (I think 1852 was another year).
