    3. Cece, I just had a chance to read your post and know that Mr. Arthur Brownell bought the J. B. Kelly Photographic Studio or Old Reliable Gallery from James B. Kelly in 1880. See this website. Http://www.rootsweb com/~kykenton/Kelly.htm. Also see http://www.rootsweb.com/~kykenton/kirkby htm. Hope this helps. Renee Werth Thanks to all who have taken the time and had an interest to respond. This last letter from Phyllis sounds interesting in its idea. The proof did Have directions, so it is entirely possible portrait was being made. Funny The family would have the proof, but no sign of a portrait or a final print Of the proof ! The dates coincide with the dates my G Grandmother would have been a young Woman. Once again, I thank you all. Phyllis, I will join the group you mentioned. Cece

    3. I checked the following Cincinnati City directories and did not find any Headlight Portrait Co: 1876, 1887-88, 1896, 1905, 1910, 1928/29, 1933, 1941, and 1951. Nor did I find Brownell Photographic Studio or a Brownell as a photographer in any of the years above, except for 1887-88 only which shows a C.A. Brownell photographer listed at 196 W. 5th St. Perhaps the Headlight portrait co was in business only a short time. I do not know what the photo looks like, but is it possible that the photo was taken in the 1880's and a portrait painting done of it in the 1930's? If you still need help, the Rootsweb Vintage Photos list is excellent for dating photos. Phyllis -----Original Message----- > I have found an old picture of my G Grandmother or grandmother. 3. You didn't mention if you have an idea of the date. Just to help you figure when it was taken, the Carew Tower was finished being built around 1931, if that helps. Joan Williams, Miami, FL. 2. Re: Pedigree Resource File: If you look at about the middle of each entry you open in the Pedigree Resource File, there's a little section that says "Notes: Sources:" If there are none, the word "None" appears there. If you're looking for these, then going to the trouble to look up those discs isn't going to be worth the time. Also, bearing in mind that there are now well over 100 discs in the File, if your contact information (name and address of submitter) is on a disc numbered 1- 75 or so, the odds that it's old are better than if it's on a more recent disc. I hope this helps you decide whether to look up a disc or not. 3. I remember a couple of years ago before I knew her maiden name was Phillips, that I did a search on Ancestry for just the first name, "Artie". I was surprised that several people popped up, in different areas of the country. So it isn't completely off the wall. I'm reading a book right now written from the perspective of a woman named Arty who would have been in her mid-late 20's when the civil war started - she lived in the mtns of western North Carolina, and it is a true story as told by her descendant. I imgine there are other spellings as well. 1. Re: [OHHAMILT] Hillside Chapel...a cemetery?
    2. Hi Deborah, When I said I had family members interred there -- I should have explained a little further. What I meant by interred was, their cremated remains are interred in urns in little niches behind glass with a brass plate on the front of the niche giving name and dates. There are little bud vases that can be clipped onto the front of the niche that will hold one or two individual flowers. Hillside Chapel isn't a cemetery -- so there are no burials. It's a series of small to moderate size rooms with lovely stained glass or frosted windows, little water fountains in the center of some of the rooms have the quiet sound of trickling water and there are benches in each room. The last time I was there they also had large bird cages in the center of some rooms (from floor to ceiling and probably 3 to 4 feet in diameter with lovely song birds, A very peaceful and beautiful place. The also have a lovely chapel there for services. It's been many years since I visited there so I don't know if it's still the same. I mean, if you have relatives buried there it must be a cemetery; but I can't find any references to it on all the cemetery lists. 3. I have ordered a number of discs from FHL in the past, but have been disappointed that there is no backup information at all. Maybe for some people, but I sure haven't had any luck. So I don't think I will order any more unless I'm desperate! I've also written to numerous "submitters" with very little response. I have discs 111-115, plus 132. I think I could do a lookup for anyone needing these discs, although each time I use them it's like learning all over again. 2. All; I just came back from an annual research trip to the FAmily History Library in SAlt Lake City. One of the things I was looking for is very much like this entry submitted for PHILLIPS/PENDERY. The Compact Discs are available, as far as I know, only at FAmily History Centers. However-- I did not find any sort of original documentation on the one I looked at. Only the usual family group information submitted by someone (see "submitter" on the previous message). There are, however, some notes that go along with the Family Group sheet information and in that case there was an e-mail address along with some information about where the submitter found data. 2. What could Artie be short for? Or is it not a shortened name? Lindsey -----Original Message----- From: MFederle <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Sent: Wed, 6 Feb 2008 11:36 am Subject: [OHHAMILT] Civil War Orphans My great grandmother, Artie Phillips, was born in 1862 (according to tombstone). In the 1870 census she is living with what looks to be an unrelated family (Walden). There is also a census listing for a boy who might be her twin, and who is living with a different and probably unrelated family (Pendrey). The post office for both is Sedamsville. There is a record of both children being baptised in the Presbyterian Church, although I'm embarassed to say I can't find the record at the moment, but I believe it was in 1867. Since this was shortly after the end of the civil war, I am wondering if they were casualties of that event, and if so, what type of records might have been kept for placing children in foster homes. Since they were both baptised in the same church at the same time, and since that was after the end of the war, I really think they were twins. I have been unable to find either of them in 1880, and I don't know whatever happened to Henry. Thanks for any input.
