    3. I have been going to Cincy yearly for the last 7 years or so to do genealogical research for 1 week at a time. I have been staying at the Red Roof Inn in the Beachmont area. They have a weekly rate that is quite reasonable. It is near I-275 and is an easy drive to the city. Their phone number is (513) 528-2741. The best place (cheapest) place to park if going to the Cincy Library is the garage on Ninth St just past the Library on Vine St. John Charles Tippet [email protected] ----- Original Message ----- From: "Peg" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, February 13, 2008 1:00 AM Subject: Re: [OHHAMILT] Cincinnati Research Trip > Phyllis - are you coming for the Ohio Genealogical Conference April 17-19? > It's on the north side of Cincinnati. > > Re places to stay - where are you planning to do most of your work? > Downtown library, courthouse, cemeteries, ? > > I just did some Googling of downtown hotels (hotels near 45202) and came > up > with this one: (there are other downtown hotels but they are 3-6 blocks > away. > > http://www.garfieldsuiteshotel.com/ > > I think it is within a block of the library if that is your primary aim. > Personally I wouldn't wonder around downtown at night alone, but during > the > day and early evening you would be fine. 3. Phyllis - are you coming for the Ohio Genealogical Conference April 17-19? It's on the north side of Cincinnati. Re places to stay - where are you planning to do most of your work? Downtown library, courthouse, cemeteries, ? I just did some Googling of downtown hotels (hotels near 45202) and came up with this one: (there are other downtown hotels but they are 3-6 blocks away. http://www.garfieldsuiteshotel.com/ I think it is within a block of the library if that is your primary aim. Personally I wouldn't wonder around downtown at night alone, but during the day and early evening you would be fine. I don't know how that would work out in terms what they charge for parking your car in addition to the room. Parking around the library can be a bit of a hassle. Here's another option, though it's about a 30 minute drive. On the east side of town there is an area called Eastgate - it's a big shopping mall area. There's a Holiday Inn and a Fairfield Inn out that way (you can Google hotels near 45244 to see these. They are also close to the expressway (I-275) so it is an easy drive to downtown. There's a hotel on Montgomery rd which I think is in Norwood. That might be ok. The area around the University and the hospitals - Clifton - is iffy for someone alone at night. I'd be happy to try to answer any specific questions you might have. You can email me directly at fayfeder at cinci.rr.com By the way - would you like company on any parts of your research? I live here, am retired, but the only research I've done is on the internet or a little at the downtown library. I am intimidated by walking into the courthouse and other places and so would love to go with someone and see how it is done. For the time in the library, if that is where you are going, we could take turns watching each other's things. - set up at a table and one of us stay with our stuff while the other went for books and films and so on. There are people cruising through the library all the time with an eye to stealing anything that is left unattended. 2. Bev Jones
    3. I am interested in any information on the Bauer & Schmitt/Schmidt. My grgrgrandfather Jacob Schmidt/Smith was born in Alsace/Lorraine 1827. So we were told that he came to America when he was four years old. I have been looking for his parents name for years. I have a copy of when Jacob enlsited in the Mexican War in 1847 in Brookville, Indiana. In 1848, Jacob received a land grant in Marion Co., Bauer Iowa. Bauer, Marion Co., IA is a Catholic Settlement started in 1848 by two Bauers and Metz. These three families had came to America between 1830-1835 and first were at Cinnannati, Ohio and then were in Franklin, Brookville, Indiana until they came to Marion Co., IA. Bauer was started by Alloys Bauer, Joseph Bauer and George Metz. I feel like my Jacob Smith knew these families before he came to Iowa. There are a lot of Bauers, still in Marion Co., IA. Jacob Smith/Schmidt died in 1863 at Bauer, Marion Co., IA. Jacob married Emerinatha Ohnemus in 1854 in Keokuk Co., IA. I have found in a ships list New Orleans Passenger list 1820-1845 Ship Allbree from LaHavre, arriving New Orleans, July 1831with the following passengers, Jacob Schmidt 34 France, America Madaline J. Schmidt 35 Germany, America Nicholas Schmidt 51 Germany, America Mary 7 Anna 5 Jacob 4 Nichoals 1 This Jacob could by age be the Jacob I am looking for. Thank you for any information anyone can give me. Bev Jones

    1. Re: [OHHAMILT] A Double Life Arnold Family member
    2. Hi Carol. I think I may have found something for you. In the 1910 census for August G. ARNOLD and his wife Jennie M. ARNOLD there are two children listed. Laura and Alfred. In 1900 there was an additional daughter named "Georgianna" who was 8. Which got me to thinking that perhaps August middle name was George. In 1912 there is a death record for Jennie at the familysearch lab. She apparently died from tuberculosis. In 1920 Alfred is living with his married sister Laura BONKOWSKI(mispelled BONKINSKY). In 1930 Laura is listed as "Elenora BONKOWSKI". Living with her is her father George ARNOLD! There is a death cert. for a George A. ARNOLD, Hamilton Co., April 22, 1930 at the familysearch lab. His daughter Laura is the informant. I don't know where he was in 1920. I couldn"t find him on the census. So it looks like you have two separate people here. I don't what to think about the conflict with the cafe information. Up until 1930 none of the people I found in the! census worked or owned a cafe. Maybe that happened later? Margaret

    3. Hello, I have been reading this thread with great interest. I have a photo of my grandmother, Florence Elizabeth RIALL (born in Cincinnati in 1887) which was taken at Brownell Studio. My grandmother looks like she is about 8 years old in the photo. My guess is that the photo was taken about 1895. The address on the front is 196 West Fifth Street. On the back it says "Brownell, The Popular Fifth Street Photographer, Cincinnati, Ohio, Bridal Groups and Instantaneous Pictures of Children a Speciality, Negatives Preserved". Karen

    2. Crystal; According to various volumes of "Restored Marriages, Hamilton Co. OH", you may be right on the names, but perhaps are missing a generation. Wendel Arnold married Elisabeth Rentz 15 May 1856 at St. John the Baptist ch. (they would be Gustave M. Arnold's parents?) August G. Arnold married Jennie Bliss 29 Oct 1884, Cinci. Freie Presse page 2 (that looks like "August and Jenny") Gustav Arnold married Mary M. Laiser 5 December 1894 by Christian Schenck (German Evangelical Protestant Church on Apple St.) (and there's Mary M. - possibly a 2nd wife)? 3. Do the two families have children with the same names and similar ages? (Meaning born around the same time). Could the wife's name be Mary Jenny or Jenny Mary? German naming practices had them using both. More commonly went by the middle name. August and Gustave have sometimes been used interchangeably. I have an ancestor who went by Gus, short for Gustave. But I've seen his name as August too. And if the record was transcribed from Latin, Augustus or Augustinus was used for Gus. If the census taker was trying to put down the legal form of the name, not what the person went by, that could account for the different names. Hope this helped. James and Dollie along with Philip and his wife Emma Church Kirkby (whom I descend from) moved to Florida to apparently try their hands at the booming orange business. Renee Werth I have been reading this thread with great interest.
