    1. Re: [OHHAMILT] Question about 1856 birth records.

    3. Sandra: I used an approach that involved lots of time and some luck but it did produce results. Many of the early records from Cincinnati churches have been microfilmed and are available for viewing at Family History Libraries operated by the Mormon Church. I used census records to locate a street address for an ancestor and then checked maps to find churches located near that address. I then started with microfilms from the nearest church and worked my way outward until I either found information or decided my ancestors didn't attend a church whose records were microfilmed. There is a good index of available microfilms at the website operated by the Mormons: http://familysearch.org. The index will usually tell you what records are available (birth, death, marriage, etc.) and what dates are covered. The time-consuming part of this process is scrolling through frame after frame of microfilmed records looking for your ancestor. However, the records are in chronological order so you can skip to the appropriate section fairly quickly if you have a reasonable idea of the date of interest. You can see where time and luck are involved but I found tons of information about the births, marriages and deaths of my ancestors. 1. Re: [OHHAMILT] Question about 1856 birth records.
    2. Greetings; I have also not run into any "real" birth records for Hamilton County OH, but there is a series of indexes called "Selected Hamilton County Ohio Church Baptism Records" by Jeff Herbert. The earliest of these several volumes is pre-1856. However, it is definitely "selected", in that it contains NO Catholic church records at all, and not all churches in the area by any means. When you get lucky, it will at least provide some lead toward finding other records at the same church. Best wishes, Ann Bergelt Florida **************Ideas to please picky eaters. 2. Another thought for your research trip. I came in a couple of years ago from Florida and stayed at Ashley Quarters, which is actually in Florence KY (convenient to the airport, rental cars, etc.). After many years away from Cincinnati, I was not about to attempt to drive across the bridge and downtown by myself. When I went to the Kenton Co. Library, and had a wonderful research day, I learned about the public transporation system. Next day, parked the car at a free lot in Florence (on Turfway, I believe) and took the bus to Sixth Street in Cincinnati. Checked the schedule and came back just before rush hour, picked up my rental car at the parking lot and felt I had really accomplished something with a minimum of stress and expense! 3. I am here in Cincy and I would suggest staying right over the bridge from downtown at Newport area. I don't like going downtown. I know you'll have to park to do research but think it would be worth it. Or just stay out by the convention and drive downtown for the day. With the highways its all connected. Peg <[email protected]> wrote: Phyllis - are you coming for the Ohio Genealogical Conference April 17-19? It's on the north side of Cincinnati. Re places to stay - where are you planning to do most of your work? Downtown library, courthouse, cemeteries, ? I just did some Googling of downtown hotels (hotels near 45202) and came up with this one: (there are other downtown hotels but they are 3-6 blocks away. http://www.garfieldsuiteshotel.com/ I think it is within a block of the library if that is your primary aim. Personally I wouldn't wonder around downtown at night alone, but during the day and early evening you would be fine. I don't know how that would work out in terms what they charge for parking your car in addition to the room. Parking around the library can be a bit of a hassle. Here's another option, though it's about a 30 minute drive. On the east side of town there is an area called Eastgate - it's a big shopping mall area. There's a Holiday Inn and a Fairfield Inn out that way (you can Google hotels near 45244 to see these. They are also close to the expressway (I-275) so it is an easy drive to downtown. There's a hotel on Montgomery rd which I think is in Norwood. That might be ok. The area around the University and the hospitals - Clifton - is iffy for someone alone at night. I'd be happy to try to answer any specific questions you might have. You can email me directly at fayfeder at cinci.rr.com By the way - would you like company on any parts of your research? I live here, am retired, but the only research I've done is on the internet or a little at the downtown library. I am intimidated by walking into the courthouse and other places and so would love to go with someone and see how it is done. For the time in the library, if that is where you are going, we could take turns watching each other's things. - set up at a table and one of us stay with our stuff while the other went for books and films and so on. There are people cruising through the library all the time with an eye to stealing anything that is left unattended.
