    3. Penny et al, I photgraphed my great grandparents' photo portraits (John and Anna Broxterman) that were each 24 by 32 inches, in elaborate frames at my elderly cousin Rosemary Broxterman's family home on West Eighth St. in Price Hill, Cincinnati. Rosemary allowed me to do that in her place but would not allow them outside for me to copy and return. I used a good 35 mm camera wirth adjustable focal length and a flash, set the portrait of each, in turn, upright on the floor in an interior door opening to avoid sunlight and took the photo (several shots each) from a slight angle to avoid flash bloom on the glass of the portrait. I selected the best of the developed photos and scanned them into my family history and as separate 5 by 7's. She did start to trust me more after this on-my-knees effort by me, a 65 year old male relative and lent me other, smaller snapshot photos of our ancestors to copy and return. If I had not gone to this trouble my chances of getting the portaits and the pics later would have been lost. Rosemary died a few months later. Her son then had her home cleaned out and all such pictures taken to the dump!! Bob Niehaus

    3. Hello List, Recent discussions of family photographs lead me to wonder if anyone can give me some suggestions on the ones I have. I was given old, formal portraits of a couple ancestors. The portraits are HUGE/ GIGANTIC and in old frames. Since I don't want to display these portraits is there anything that I can do with them? Is there some place that could handle scanning very large photos and then I could reduce them to a manageable size? And does anyone have suggestions on how they should be stored. I won't be able to just throw them out. Thanks in advance to all suggestions. Penny Fairfield, OH

    1. [OHHAMILT] FOERTMEYER and WALLEN Family Photographs
    2. Shelley Cardiel
    3. I've "rescued" a group of photographs belonging to the FOERTMEYER Family of Ohio and Kentucky. The first photograph is identified as Easton & Margie FOERTMEYER. There is no studio or location indicated on this photograph, however, it appears to have been taken in the 1880's or 1890's with the two children appearing to be about 4-7 years old at the time. The second photograph is of Samuel FOERTMEYER and was taken at the J. C. Volz Studio in Newport, KY. This photograph was probably taken in the 1890's or early 1900's with Samuel likely about 5 years old at the time. The third photograph is of three young girls, Helen FOERTMEYER, Margie FOERTMEYER, and Theresa WALLEN. It was taken at the Mathews Studio in Cincinnati, OH, likely sometime in the 1890's or early 1900's with the three girls appearing to be all about 12 years old. I believe that the family is somehow connected to the FOGLE and WUNDER Family of Ohio and Kentucky as photographs belonging to that family were recovered from the same source. I am hoping to locate someone from this family so that these wonderful old photographs can be returned to their care. If you are a member of this family, or you know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley

    1. [OHHAMILT] FOGLE Family Photographs
    2. Shelley Cardiel
    3. I've "rescued three old photographs which I believe all belong to the FOGLE Family of Cincinnati, Ohio. The first is a photograph of Norma & Willie FOGLE which was taken at the E. B. Cory Studio in Cincinnati. The photograph appears to have been taken in the 1890's with the children appearing to be 4-6 years old at the time it was taken. The boy appears to be the oldest. The second photograph is one of Willie FOGLE which was taken at the Dickinson Studio in Cincinnati, likely sometime in the 1880's with Willie appearing to be about 3-4 years old at the time. The third is a photograph of an unidentified woman which was taken at the A. T. Slocum Studio in Cincinnati. The woman in this third photograph appears to be in her 20's or 30's when the photograph was taken, likely sometime in the 1880's. William and Pearl divorced and he married Mattie Eva JONES on 9 Feb 1921 and had a son William Henry FOGLE Jr. William died 24 Jun 1932 in Little Rock, AR. Norma and William had 6 siblings, Effie Marie; Charles Herbert; Clara Louise; Wilbur H.; Oliver Hobart; and Samuel Wunder FOGLE born between 1889 and 1897 all in Cincinnati, OH. 2. Yes Hatties middle name is Lee. She would have been 27 in 1900. I found her in 1900 working in the home of Joseph Fennell I believe in Covington. No sign of Charles or their son James. I have no idea when Charles was born. The only place I have his name is on the marriage record of Hatties. Thanks for any help Rose ************** Ideas to please picky eaters. 2. This is a real roadblock for me. I can't seem to find Charles W. Smith anywhere. He married my grandmother Hattie Lee Davis in 1892 in Cincinnati, they had a child in 1894. In the 1900 census Hattie is a servant in a home in Covington and I can't find Charles or their son. By 1908 Hattie remarries George Usborne. On her marriage record she states that she is widowed. In the 1900 census she states that she is married. So sometime between 1900 and 1908 Charles has died. I sent to the University of Cincinnati Library for a list of Charles Smiths that died in those years. There was one that I thought would have been a good possibility. Says he died in 1905. He was an elevator man and had an accidental fall from an elevator shaft. Says he lived at Sycamore between 8 & 7 St. Maybe you can shed some light on this for me. I don't know what else to do. I have been searching for 12 years with no luck. Thanks Rose ************** Ideas to please picky eaters. Watch video on AOL Living. 3. Seems like a fall from an elevator shaft would have made the Cincinnati newspapers. And it sounds like you have the date this particular Charles Smith died. Have you tried the Newsdex? The index is not complete by any means but it may have something. Not sure how far back it goes though. Can someone help here? Or better yet, requested a lookup from the Cincinnati library for any news article on the accident? In the 1896 Cincinnati City Directory there are several Hattie Smiths, but no Charles W. Smith. One of the Hattie's is a chambermaid who lived at 1634 Hewitt. But she is not listed as a widow. Only one Hattie is listed as a widow; but widow of a Thomas Smith. And none of the 50 or so Charles Smiths listed lived at that address. By the way, there are 7 Charles W. Smiths listed. Again, wives are not listed with their husbands. Have you checked in Covington, KY? You say you found her in the 1900 census as a servant in a home in Covington in 1900. Are you sure it is her? 3. Judy, in addition to what others may have responded, and I may not even be correct on this, BUT, most, if not all of the hospitals still in the late 1900's (1950-????) were located within the city of Cincinnati limits. Thus, no matter where they "lived" if they were taken to or died in a hospital, the death occurred within the city of Cincinnati & not in the outlying areas of Hamilton Co. 2. Hello Members, ....two favorite words of the genealogist.... Free and Online. Last week someone on this list was looking for old Cincinnati ward Locations. There is a map Online for Cincinnati 1869. This map does list ward numbers. Also, 270 pages of other interesting Cincinnati things in 1869. Go to: HeritageQuest Online (I think most of us link to this free via the public library system) Under the category of BOOKS : Title: The city of Cincinnati : a summary of its attractions, advantages, institutions and internal improvements, with a statement of its public charities Cincinnati: G.S. Blanchard & Co., 1869, 271 pgs. I hope this helps the person who was looking for ward information. Smiles to you, Deborah **************Ideas to please picky eaters. Watch video on AOL Living. 1. Re: [OHHAMILT] Question about 1856 birth records.
    2. Again; Unless something drastic (and miraculous) has changed since I visited Salt Lake City less than a month ago, those church records microfilms do not include any Catholic records. The "baptisms" indexes do refer the searcher back to the name of the church of the event, and the LDS film numbers are given in that list. Again, all the indexes available for church events in Cincinnati will at least give some kind of headway into finding family records at the same church when one relative is identified.
