Found at Spring Grove under "STAUB" but card is correct.
I'm having a hard time figuring out how to use these resources. I know, according to a Pennsylvania Archives card, that my 4ggf Brice COLLINS served in the 4th Bn., 6th Co., from Cumberland County, under Capt. Jonathon Robeson. But I can't find him anywhere on the Ancestry site. Am I doing something wrong??? Lorraine [email protected]

Phyllis As suggested, Vine Street Cemetery if he was German Protestant. If he was German Catholic, then I would look to St. Mary's in St. Bernard or possibly Old St Joe. Karen Ausdenmoore, Brady, Conley,, Hummel, Kelly, Lafont, Louis, Lyons, Mulligan, Newman, O'Connell, Waag, Weddendorf in Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio Grumski/Gronsky, Kapron, Oleniacz, Prohaska, Simoncic, Solarska in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania
Thanks Karen. I have tried Spring Grove, Vine St (I called them), Wesleyan (online only....are those records complete?), and Walnut Hills. He was German but not Catholic. I did find a reference that his death information is on a St. John's Unitarian (was located at 12th and Elm) record book that has been microfilmed by the LDS church. I have ordered the film and it should arrive in three weeks. I am hoping it lists where he is buried. I also have a short obit from the Volksfreund written in fancy German script that someone is going to try to decipher for me. We don't know if it states the burial place. I called Blegen Library just now as they supposedly have death records from that time period...and they do. I am sending them $10 and a SASE for them to send me the information. He said I could request more names than this and that the $10 would cover all of them. Thanks for everyone's suggestions! perhaps Vine St Cemetery. I am trying to locate the burial place of Michael Straub who died suddenly in Cincinnati at about age 43 on 21 November 1871 (buried on 24 Nov). I have checked Spring Grove and Walnut Hills records but no sign of him. I see there was a notice published in the Volksfreund (per the index to notices), but it doesn't give the burial place. It just says he attend St. John's Unitarian church at 12th and Elm. Any suggestions on where else I should look? Thanks! Phyllis
New Legislation in Congress Aims to Help Preserve State and Local RecordsI received this email from the Ohio Historical Society yesterday, and with permission from this List Administrator, I'm posting it here. It concerns legislation recently introduced in Congress providing grants to help preserve historical records held by state and local government agencies, libraries, genealogical societies, etc. ----- Original Message ----- From: Todd Kleismit To: Robert Gels Sent: Monday, May 19, 2008 11:32 AM Subject: New Legislation in Congress Aims to Help Preserve State and Local Records New Legislation in Congress Aims to Help Preserve State and Local Records Preserving the American Historical Record Act Take Action! HR 6056 would establish federal formula grant program Legislation was introduced in Congress May 14 that would make federal formula grants available to each state for the preservation of historical records held by state and local governments, historical societies, libraries and other organizations. HR 6056, also known as the Preserving the American Historical Record (PAHR), was introduced by Representatives Maurice Hinchey (D-NY) and Chris Cannon (R-UT). HR 6056 would provide $50 million to states based on a formula that takes into account population and geographic size. If funded at the $50 million level, PAHR would allow the State Archives, part of the Ohio Historical Society, to provide grant funding of more than $1.65 million annually to Ohio's local recordkeeping institutions. You can view HR 6056 by clicking here. Ohio's local governments, libraries, genealogical societies, archival institutions and local historical societies would benefit tremendously by the enactment of PAHR. The legislation has been referred to the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. Ohio Congressmen Dennis Kucinich (D-Cleveland), Mike Turner (R-Dayton) and Jim Jordan (R-Urbana) serve on the Committee. Please contact your member of Congress to urge their support of PAHR (HR 6056) by utilizing the tools below. If you no longer wish to receive e-mail from us, please click here.

I believe that obit for Nurre was the same lady who was in the assisted living with my mother about 5 yrs. ago. She was related to the Nurre Funeral people. She moved from that home to another. I believe she had been living in FL before she returned to Cincinnati to be near her family. Bob, Sorry to just jump in, but being from a family that passed kids around a lot I have only found one reason. The welfare system was not set up then and a lot of time there was just not enough money to support the family. If he re-married and did not take the first batch of kids, it may have been he could not support all of the kids and they were better cared for in the orphanage, so he loved them enough to leave them there. Hi list, Does anyone on the list know if inquest records for 1863 still can be found and where? I'm still searching for Hiram Sloop, who first appears in the the Hamilton Co., restored marriage records for 1826. He appears in the 1831 Cincinnati City Directory and in several following years until his suicide in 1863. No burial record found other than he was buried at the Methodist Protestant Cemetery. Census and other records state he was born in Ohio and Scotland. He apparently had some depression or other mental condition and the declaration that he was born in Scotland appears to be a reflection of this problem. He may be the son of John Sloop m. Rachel Williams 1804, but proof is needed. John appears in the 1825 city directory as a blacksmith b. MD. Hiram is also a blacksmith. John is listed in an Ohio roster for the War of 1812. Pioneer Ohio newspapers have a John Sloop living in Cincinnati reporting a stolen mare in 1814. It seems strange however that none of Hiram's male sons were named John. Hiram's son's Civil War Pension file states that Mary Sloop Lape is either a sister or Aunt. She too was born in Maryland 20 Nov 1789. In Book 1 and A, Probate Record 1791-1821, John Sloop and Jacob Sloop are mentioned in the record for Mary's husband Benjamin. Mary's sons: Benjamin and Jacob S. Lape, helped Hiram and state that they are nephews. Mary was a member of the Old Stone Church and is a member 1812-1813. Hiram has one known niece: Henrietta Sloop Burch who dies about 1851 Indiana. Her parents are unknown. Is she Mary's daughter? Hiram buys and sells land, but no information has been found in Deed records. Hiram was a member of the Church of the New Jerusalem along with Samuel Sloop. Samuel was a plane maker and b. PA, died age 39, 1840. I feel he is most likely a relative, but again connection unknown. A Samuel Sloop, age 13-14, appears int he Pioneer Ohio newspapers in 1815 as a runaway apprentice. Is this the same Samuel? Hiram sued an administrator, unsuccessfully, of the Soldier's Home. Records indicate that most of Hiram's children died. All but two and his wife are found in 1870. Family history says he was born in PA, and that he was "Pennsylvania Dutch". Did he just mean he was German? No records for him have been found in PA. A Philip Sloop is found in the 1810 PA census with four sons. They are the right age for one to be Hiram, but again the record trail ends and Philip is not found again. Did his father die and his mother remarry? I've looked everywhere I can think of and feel I'm at the end of the road. If anyone knows if the inquest records exist or of any other older records available, I'd really appreciate the help! Sandy California
Ann I have just the opposite. My great-grandmother passed away in 1904 and I have a copy of the record granting guardianship of my grandfather (12 at the time) to his own father, my great-grandfather. I still haven't figured out why. 6 years later my grandfather's oldest brother gave up his 5 children when his wife died from TB. The boys went to one orphanage and the girls went to another. I know in the case of the girls, since he wanted them to have a proper religeous education, and couldn't afford it, he had to sign over the rights or guardianship of the girls to the orphanage. And it still bothers me that even after he remarried, he never got back custody of any of the 5 children from his first wife. Phyllis; It is my understanding that women simply had no legal status, and as such were not automatically granted custody of their own children, even in widowhood. There were apparently some instances, however, in which the mother was given custody of her children at a court hearing, but they usually were given to a male relative who was supposed to be responsible for them. Not always even a relative -- could have been an attorney, etc. (who just may have become involved because there was some estate to be managed as well). Thanks Ann. I guess it's a little hard to comprehend a widow not automatically having legal custody of her children. I wonder if this was done to protect the children. You know, making sure there was an income earning adult responsible for them in case the mother could not work due to childcare responsibilities. Phyllis -----Original Message----- It is my understanding that women simply had no legal status, and as such were not automatically granted custody of their own children, even in widowhood. There were apparently some instances, however, in which the mother was given custody of her children at a court hearing, Ann Bergelt
I have encountered two Cincinnati records recently that show an adult male (usually related somehow) being named guardian of children soon after the father's death, where the mother is still young, alive and capable. In one, the father was killed in the Civil War in 1864. In the other, the father killed himself in 1882. Does anyone know the legal reason why a male had to be appointed guardian when the widow was fully capable? Was this just to settle the estate? Thanks, Phyllis
His obit was published in the Enquirer, Page 7, Col 1, on 12/05/1985. You can request copy of it from Cincinnati Public Library. However, you may want to go to www.cincinnatilibrary.org and click on Research & Homework and then Newsdex to see a number of added articles dating back to1934 where Finn is mentioned.
