I am researching early (prior to 1840) German schools in Cincinnati. I have a letter that states that my great grandfather Jacob Gessert arrived in Cincinnati at the age of 5 in September 1836 on an Ohio Steamer. "He first attended the so-called German Emigrant School of which the first teachers were Mr. Wise and Mr. Salomon. Soon the German-English Free School was established, of which Mr. Joseph A. Hermann was the first teacher. In 1839, a Mr. Henry Poppelman became his teacher." I have contacted Don Heinrich Tolzmann (indirectly through one of his good friends) and I have spoken with Blegen Library in Cincinnati as well as the Cincinnati Historical Society. No one seems to know anything about these schools. I did find this little bit online: ".Philipp Hauser, and . Julius Weyse (or Weise), who taught from 1836 to 1839 at a school for German emigrant children sponsored by the Presbyterian Lane Seminary." Has anyone else run across information about the German Emigrant (Immigrant) School? Phyllis

Would the original marriage certificate at the courthouse have more information on the couple such as parent's names? -------------------------- Hi Ken, I'm glad you were able to find some couples that may be part of your family. I can't really say if the marriage certificate would have the parent's names. The certificates I have don't give parent's names, but other researchers I've talked to, said the parent's names were given on "their" certificates. I think it all depends on who was filling out the certificate and what questions they were or were not asking and what year the couple were getting married. Would another subscriber on this list who got marriage certificates from Hamilton County be able to offer an opinion? I'm sorry I wasn't more help, Marilyn **************Gas prices getting you down? My ancestor John Williamson who was a very early resident of Cincinnati (since 1803), on Water near what is now the Suspension Bridge. He probably died during the cholera epidemic (Between the 1830 City Directory publishing/1830 census and his Will Inventory dated Nov. 22, 1831 witness: Isaac G. Burnet). He was a cabinetmaker, as were his sons John, Daniel, Charles and William. Are there any lists of victims available, and where could he have been buried? I'm not finding him in any index. He was probably of German descent. Thanks so much for any ideas! Kimberly **************Gas prices getting you down? Search AOL Autos for fuel-efficient used cars. Steven, I have done research on a Henry B. Weglage b 16 Mar 1846 Hanover, Germany, d 04 Sep 1924 Cincinnati, buried Old St. Joseph Cemetery who married into my Irish family. According to his death certificate his parents were Henry Weglage and Teckla Aherns (sp? difficult to read), both born in Germany. Henry B. Weglage's wife was Elizabeth McDonald, b abt 1846 Ireland. They m 05 Sep 1871 Holy Trinity Church, Cincinnati. They had 3 daughters two of whom I have traced to the present generation. The third is a mystery after her marriage in 1896. No sons. I don't see them on your list, but there weren't many people with the surname Weglage in Cincinnati at that time. Let me know if you see a connection. Nora Galvin Bridgeport CT

Sometimes you can get a detailed listing of property transfers through the years. I have found a lot of ancestral homes here. HOWEVER, I'm not sure what's available for structures no longer there or whose land has been attached to another address. So anyway, when I tried your addresses (2507-2515) there was nothing there: there is no odd numbered address in the 2500 block any more. It took me some playing around, but what I did was find a 2510 which would be across the street (parking garage). Looking at the map view of 2510, I got the parcel number for a building across the street which also faces Calhoun Street-- it's a gas station whose address is officially on Calhoun. The site has some of the property transactions for this location-- the bit I found was all commercial but there may be more there. So anyway, you might want to check out this site. Poke around a bit-- things seem to be put in different places in different ways and the more you look, the more information there seems to be, but it requires some looking in un-obvious places. Other than that you might wish to contact the Cincinnati Historical Society to see what their collection has. Hope this is of some help. You've gotten me curious about the building. I'd like to see pictures of it, too. Juliann

This topic tweaked my interest. Family legend has it that my gg-father Aaron Brown who arrived in Hamilton Co in 1805 at age 7 yr was apprenticed to a blacksmith at age 14, circa 1812. Prior to becoming a farmer/blacksmith, about 1820, in the Glendale area he is said to have worked on the first steamboat built in Cincinnati , and the iron bands used on the water pipes for the first water distribution system for the town. Hi; I did quite a bit of searching several years ago when I found my great-great grandfather's obituary which stated he was "the well known steamboat man". Apparently he was not well known enough to have been documented anywhere! But in the process, I ran across some very interesting resources. Look for books about Ohio River and Inland rivers steamboats by Frederick WAY. Many names and boats are mentioned, although most of the people were ship's captains, not just crew. If you are in Cincinnati - volumes should be in the main library. Also, there is an organization which published an extremely detailed journal, probably quarterly. I believe the name of the society is "Sons and Daughters of Riverboat Pioneers" and is located in Marietta, Ohio. Those publications are also full of details, including family names and information. Turned out my ancestor was apparently a watchman on the boats, most likely on the Kentucky side of the Ohio, as he was found in both Newport and Covington late in life. So, good luck on your search -- and if you run across Hiram POTTS, I'd appreciate the info! Ann Bergelt Florida **************Get trade secrets for amazing burgers.
