Regarding your second question on 1860 census, column 13 - why were the numbers encased in parentheses? I can't say for sure, but I would guess this just happened to be the style of R. (Robert) Savage, the enumerator and Assistant Marshal (who later became a state senator). He used the same style in column 12 and also for his enumerations in Spencer Twp. He also seemed to use it consistently from page to page. In some of the other townships I checked, enumerators did not use parentheses. Tom Bay, Powell, OH
