    1. Elijah Grimes of Belmont, Guernsey, and Muskingum Cos.....parents? Obit? D. 1876
    2. I'm following up the obit for the second wife of Col. Elijah Grimes, Nancy Lippincott Grimes of Cambridge, Guernsey Co., OH. Nancy Grimes died in 1898, and her obituary in the Cambridge Jeffersonian is as much about her husband, Col. Elijah Grimes, as it is about her. Fortunately, it gives the date of death--May 8, 1876--and age--87 yrs--for Col. Grimes, and the fact that he operated a hotel in Zanesville--the Zane House--which he ran for some years prior to his death. His extended family, though, was in Cambridge, where the obit states he was buried--as was his wife Nancy Lippincott Grimes. It was the second marriage for Elijah Grimes; his first wife, Suzanne Holtz Grimes, died in the 1830s. Both of his marriages occurred in Belmont Co., where Elijah Grimes ran both a mill and a hotel in Morristown. I'm hoping that there was a county death record for Elijah Grimes in Muskingum Co., and that it might possibly name his parents. He was born around 1789, and came to eastern OH as a soldier in the War of 1812. His military career advanced beyond this service, and upon leaving the military he went into the milling and hotel business, first in Morristown, and then on to Cambridge, ending up in Zanesville. From the obit for Nancy Grimes, it looks like both are buried in the cemetery in Cambridge. There is a possible connection between this Elijah Grimes and a Robert Grimes, also of Belmont Co., who died in 1866 and is buried in Barnesville. Both Robert and Elijah Grimes seemed to have lived in the Hendrysburg/ Morristown area between 1820 and 1840. Both men were--according to census data--born in MD; Robert Grimes looks to have been born ca. 1790/1...a couple of years younger than Elijah. It is not known where in MD these Grimes men were from.
