Author: Mary Jane Haight-Eckert <[email protected]> Surnames: KNOWLES, HUGHES Classification: Obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/AWB.2ACE/2193 Message Board Post: Unidentified Newsclipping - 1887 The Rev. Samuel F. KNOWLES was born near Allentown, Monmouth County, New Jersey, July 6, 1810, and died in Claysville, Guernsey County, Ohio, September 18, 1887. He was converted when about twenty, and united with the Methodist Episcopal chyrch, which he loved dearly all his life. He married Margaret P. HUGHES October 1, 1830. In 1833 they came to Ohio, settling in Guernsey County, where they lived for more than half a century. She preceded him 15 months to the home above. Having been licensed as Exhorter for some yearss, he was licensed as Local Preacher, and for many years was quite successful, extensive revivals often attending his labors. He always was found a helper to his pastors in all departments of work. He was ordained Deacon in 1858, and some years later was elected to Elder's orders. All offices from that down he held, and filled with great acceptability. Decided in his convictions, resolute in his understandings, he was generally successful. For six ye! ars he was afflicted, and endured sufferings beyond description, but in them all his faith never faltered. In his life example, and in his death, he has left a goodly heritage. He was the remaining brother of the Rev. Enoch KNOWLES, who died at Lambertville, Hunterdon County, New Jersey, and John KNOWLES, who died at North Crosswicks, Burlington County, New Jersey. Two surviving sisters will, ere long, join them where family ties will nevermore be broken. Additional information: Note 1: 1850 US Census - Monroe, Guernsey County, Ohio - Household: Saml.
