Author: Cornelia Warner <[email protected]> Surnames: Moore, Scott, Downer Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/AWB.2ACE/2031.1 Message Board Post: I have proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that the John S. Moore in the 1860 census is the man I'm researching. I have found him in later census than we thought we would find him, found his records from the Kansas Soldier's home and his death record, and found several obituaries that mention him. I'm waiting for his CW pension file. so anyone wondering about this family, I can put it together for them. I'm still looking into John S. and Isabel Moore's relationship to the family. John's middle name is Scott, just like our John Scott Moore, so I am even more intrigued. Catherine Scott Moore's obituary 2 Feb 1893 Mrs. Catherine Moore, widow of Thomas B. Moore, died of paralysis, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Wm Downer, two miles south-west of Cambridge, Saturday, Jan. 21st, 1893, aged 78 years, 11 months, 11 days. She was born in Beaver Co., Pa., Feb 10 1814, and was converted under the pasterate of the Rev. George Scott, pastor of the Presbytarian congregation of Mill Creek, at the age of 18 years, was married to Thomas B. Moore, Oct 10 1836, moved to Guernsey Co. in 1843, lived in the vicinity of Cumberland four years, then came to Cambridge, where they remained a number of years, raising a family of seven children, only two of whom are now living, namely, Mrs. Wm. Downer and Mr. John S. Moore, of Missouri, who was unable to attend her funeral on account of illness. As a christian she was unaustentatious, her piety deep, her acquqintance with the Scriptures extensive, her view of doctrines clear and comprehensive. As a wife and mother she was faithfully devoted, affectionate, exemplary; patient in suffering, submissive, never murmuring or complaining at any time. She was cheered with God's presence and sustained by His grace. She leaves numerous friends who mourn her loss, but who feel it is her gain. Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Doctor Milligan on Monday, Jan. 23, her mortal remains laid in the cemetery in Cambridge her daughter Julia's obituary; 6 Sep 1900 Death of Mrs. William Downer Mrs. Wm Downer, whose sickness has been mentioned heretofore, died at the residence of her son and daughter, on E. Gomber Ave., this city, at 1 o'clock p. m., Saturday, Sept. 1st. She was the daughter of Thomas and Katherine Moore, and was born near Burgettstown, Pa., Oct. 29 1837. At about the age of nine years she, with her parents, removed to this county, where she has since resided, the greater part of her life having been passed on the home farm near this city. in 1857 she was married to Mr. William Downer who survives her, and in the same year, in company with her husband united with the Presbytarian church of this city, of which she has since been a consistant member, and until failing health prevented, ever faithful to her attendance upon all religous services. to them were born eleven children, of whom three have gone before, and eight survive her; every one of the latter being present at her last sickness. One brother, J. Scott Moore, living in Arkansas, sixteen gr! andchildren and one great grand child also survive her. she was a kind, loving and indulgant mother, a fond and faithful wife, a concientious and consistant Christian, bearing her sufferings patiently, and without a murmur, a generous and noble woman, who has passed from the sorrows and trials of this life for the peaceful joys that await the true Christian in the great Master's Mansion. The funeral services at 4 o'clock Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Doctor Milligan assisted by Revs Boughton and Selby, were very largely attended. Prof. Brown with a selected choir, rendered Several favorite hymns of the deceased. Interment was made in the city cemetery. I have more information on the descendants of Thomas B. Moore and Catherine Scott, available to anyone interested.
