I've been trying to make the connection between Jacob Shipman (Jr.!) and his parents for a while now, and getting nowhere. I wondered if the Jacob Shipman of Lycoming Co. were related to my Jacob but could find nothing to prove it. With the obituary information, it falls into place! I found a message, don't remember whether it was on Ancestry.com, Rootsweb.com, or one of the Genforum message boards at Genealogy.com, by a Smith descendant. Evidently Jacob Shipman Jr.'s first wife (the mother of his children) died and Jacob remarried, to a woman named Mrs. Mary Smith (she was a widow with children near in age to Jacob's); that is the Mary who is listed in Jacob's household in the 1850 census in Guernsey Co. I am guessing that his first wife was still alive in 1830 because there are only 4 children listed in Jacob's household at the time, which accounts for John and his three full siblings, but not the (Smith) step-children. And of course, by 1840, most of the children and steps were grown and on their own, so I haven't been able to confirm this information. Jacob Shipman Jr. and his first wife (possibly Mary Bonnell, according to information sent me from the book The Shipman Family in America, and I haven't seen the whole book yet!) had four children: Jane Shipman, born between 1810-1815 Margaret Shipman, born 3 Mar 1813 Lewis Shipman, born 1817 John Shipman, born 1818. I haven't located any further information on Jane yet. Margaret married Barnett William Fordyce. I know of at least one child in this family, John Shipman Fordyce, born 15 Feb 1837 in Guernsey Co. Lewis Shipman married Mary Jane (Polly?) Gillet, and they had 11 children: Elizabeth M., George M., John, William B., Phoeba A., Margaret, Jacob, Mary J., Jedediah, Samuel L, and Flora J. Shipman, spaced fairly regularly between 1840 and 1865. John Shipman married Hannah Maria Gillet (sister of Lewis' wife). They had four children that I know of: Martha A., Mary Elizabeth, Hannah Maria, and Alma A. I don't have more on Martha at this time, except that she was born around 1852. Mary Elizabeth, born 24 Mar 1855 in Winterset, Madison Twp., Guernsey Co., Ohio; on 12 Apr 1874, she married George Walter Reelhorn, a dentist. They had 8 children, moved to Licking County, Ohio, settled in the Kirkersville area. The children were Etta May (Emch), John Shipman, Samuel Ray, Charles Wesley, Hattie Lee (White), Calla Maria (Lucas), Nellie Elma (Handshy), and Mary Clare (Elrod). Mary Elizabeth died 2 Jun 1927 and is buried in the Kirkersville Cemetery. Hannah Maria, born 7 Jun 1859, married Asberry Lee Beal. Their children were Tirzah Rachael (McCormick), Waldo H., Jennie V. (Hollingsworth), and Clyde Sparks Beal. Alma A., born about 1862, married Marion Fayette McConnell. Their children were Laura (Krebs) and Clyde Edgar McConnell. On the next generation, I have mostly information on the descendants of George Walter and Mary Elizabeth Shipman Reelhorn, although I have picked up some information on Hannah and Alma's grandchildren from census records, etc. Aunt Ettie married Will Emch and had no children. Uncle John married Minnie Florence Tunison, and their children were Mary Gladys, Nell Marie, Thelma Clare, Walter Tunison, Ruth Elizabeth, Dorothea Helen, and John Richard Reelhorn. (Dates available, e-mail me for details, we're getting to the generation where there are still living descendants, and I'm trying to respect their privacy.) Uncle Ray married Minnie Grace Guyton, and their children were Florence, Mildred, and Grace Reelhorn. Uncle Charlie married Armetta Arzula Lawyer, and their son was Charles Eugene Reelhorn. Aunt Hattie married Bert White and their children were William Walter and Letha White. Letha died of consumption around age 19. Callie was my great-grandmother. She married Odie Dan Lucas in 1909. Their oldest daughter, my grandmother Kathryn, is still living, age 95. Her sisters, Mildred (Case) and Wanda Lee (Pickering) have both passed on. Aunt Nellie married Harry Handshy, and their daughter ! was Mary Olive Handshy. Aunt Clare married Ezekiel Elrod (a Methodist Minister), and they had four children: William W., Margaret E. (Betty), Dorothy M., and Mary Alice Elrod. I'll be happy to give you additional details and further generations. E-mail me! Thank you again for your help! --Kathryn
