DearListers: I am intrigued by what I have read about an Alexander Campbell (m. 1820, Eleanor Little) family, not the least of which is the reference in the 1850 U.S. Census for Ohio (Guernsey) to (i) a daughter Emily R. Campbell b. about 1838, (ii) to the proportion of sons vs. daughters in that family, and (iii) to the possibility from the Census that an older child of the family was one Thomas W. Campbell, age 25, a lawyer, then living apart from the rest of his family. The origins of my interest lies in the excerpt from the following letter written by my great grandfather, Rev. Thomas Swainston Campbell, dated 3 June 1907, to his son Wilfred Campbell. T.S. Campbell was only 3 or 4 when his father died in 1835, so I believe that he may have confused the generations. The excerpt reads: "I would like very much to find out my uncle Alexander's family. He came to America some time previous to my father. There was a large shipload of them from the same section of Derry, & almost all of them relatives by blood or marriage. They all settled together. McKinleys & Harrisons were among them. My uncle Alexr. was the eldest of the family. He survived my father several years left seven sons & one daughter the youngest being called Emily after my mother. The eldest sons were Alexr, Robert & Jas & Thomas, the names of the others I do not know. Robert went to California in 49 & made money & and that is all I know about him. Thomas became a lawyer but died of consumption a year or two after he passed - he was the only one that used to write us, & after he died all correspondence ceased." [emphasis added] A branch of my Campbell family emigrated from Ulster in the early 19th century to Ohio; with the head being an Alexander Campbell (with wife possibly named Mary), and who is supposed to be the eldest child of James and Elizabeth Campbell who, prior to leaving for Upper Canada in 1820 with their youngest child Thomas (a one-time licentiate of the Presbyterian Church in Ulster and later a minister of the Church of England in Upper Canada) and other members of the family, were residing at Lisnagrot, two miles from Kilrae, in the parish of Tamlet O'Crilly, Londonderry. I doubt for a number of reasons that the members of the family were long-time residents of Lisnagrot. The father, James Campbell, of the Township of Thurlow, aged 84 years, died on the 21st. and was buried on the 23rd. of March, 1830. Elizabeth, his wife, aged 77 years, died on the 25th. and was buried on the 27th of July 1828. There were five known children of the marriage of James and Elizabeth Campbell, as follows: (i) Alexander Campbell, (ii) Margaret Campbell, (iii) Catherine [Campbell] Cunningham, (iv) Robert Campbell, and (v) Thomas Campbell. The 11th September 1830 issue of the Kingston Chronicle [Kingston, Upper Canada] reads: "Married .... On Thursday, the 9th inst. at St. Thomas' Church, Belleville, by the Hon. and Right Rev. the Lord Bishop of Quebec, the Rev. Thomas Campbell, A.M. Rector of said Church, to Emily Rosa, youngest daughter of the late Thomas Swainstone of London, Merchant." [emphasis added] There were three children of the marriage: Thomas Swainston Campbell born 1831, Eliza Sophia [Campbell] Carroll born 1833, and Anna Maria Pearson [Campbell] Ridley born 1835. I wonder whether any of this information/data resonates with you? I would be pleased to discuss more of this with anyone if you think there may be a family connection, or for any reason. Thanks in advance. Judith Giffin Halifax, Nova Scotia Canada <JFGiffin@eastlink.ca>
