This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: Betty_Cordial Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.ohio.counties.guernsey/4463/mb.ashx Message Board Post: My ancestor (John Karr) migrated to Londonderry Township in 1834. In 1838 he purchased BLM land in Wills Township; in 1838 he purchased 73 acres from James Karr in Wills Township. In the 1840 Census James Karr (age 30-40) and family are living in Wills Township. They are gone by 1850. Can anyone provide me with some suggestions on further research for Wills Township? I've found lots of material on most other Guernsey County townships, but haven't as yet located anything on Wills. John Karr never moved or lived in Wills Township and died in Londonderry in 1844. James Karr had to be related to our John, but there is no record showing a James of this age range (earliest born in the 1860s). Any help with Wills Township records would be most appreciated. How funny. I was just about to post a question about Wills Township too. Where the heck is/was it and what if anything happened to it? I am looking for Hugh and Mary Stewart who in the 1850 census lived in Wills Township. They also lived in Gibson Station later and I can't find anything on either place. Betty, I will let you know if I come across anything in my research but maybe we will get lucky and find someone who knows more. THANKS ALL. Wills Twp - one of the original 5 - is located east of Center Twp, which is east of Cambridge Twp. There's an awful lot of information available on the Web; the absolute best is the Ohio GenWeb site: http://www.usgennet.org/usa/oh/county/guernsey/ , which contains a really well-written history and maps. The town of Washington (now "Old" Washington), which was the hub of the township, and a pretty lively place - possibly more so than Cambridge for a few decades. If you read the early Guernsey County newspaper, you get a pretty good idea of the number of people, businesses, and society of the early and mid-19th Century Washington, which was a major crossroads. And, of the apparent competitive relationship between Washington and Cambridge - one that was fairly political. Washington appears to have begun declining in the later 19th C, and is now a very quiet place. There's an exhaustive history of Guernsey County, including info on Wills Twp in Sarchet: http://contentdm.byu.edu/cdm4/document.php?CISOROOT=%2FFH2&CISOPTR=10732&REC=5&CISOBOX As for Gibson Station, take a look at this site: http://www.epodunk.com/cgi-bin/localProx.php?local=142917&locTGroup=Cemeteries&dist=7 Hope these links help others, as they've helped me. I knew nothing of the area when we visited briefly in April 2008, but want to go back and pursue leads to ten (maybe eleven) early Guernsey families, all of whom are my ancestors!
