Broom died at his residence on Highland Avenue, Cambridge, Ohio, Sunday evening December 29, 1907. His sudden and unexpected death cast a gloom over the city, where he had so long resided and was universally esteemed. For many years past he was prominent in business affairs and since 1889 was engaged in the business of grocer and queensware dealer. He was a veteran of the war of the Rebellion, participated in many of the principal battles of the war and since its close has been a leading and enthusiastic member of the G.A.R. He was one of the trustee instrumental of the erection of the beautiful monument on the public square. He was a son of the late Daniel and Rebecca Broom, of this city, and was born March 6, 1843 and grew to manhood on a farm north east of Cambridge. At the age of 18 years, Dec. 18, 1861, he enlisted in Company, 18th O.V.I. and discharged August 1865 at Little Rock, Ark., bearing a good record as a brave, faithful soldier as any man ever enjoyed. A more minute sketch of his subsequent life is as follows; In 1869 he engaged in the business of butchering and sold his products in Cambridge to which place he removed in 1872 where he afterwards resided and continued his occupation until he went to Colorado where he was employed for seven years in prospecting and mining. Returning to Cambridge he established the business in which in recent years he was associated with his sons. In 1866 he was united in marriage with Miss Amanda C. Mather's, who survives him. To them were born four children, namely; William H., Mary E., wife of John G. Payne, of Indiana, James Franklin and Albert K. is deceased. He was frequently honored by his fellow citizens with public positions, notably as Justice of the Peace and Township Trustee, to which last position he was recently reelected in Cambridge Township. In all the relations in life, public and private, he was a soul of honor, kindly, benevolent and thoughtful of the welfare of others. Funeral services will be held from the resident at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon, conducted by Dr. McFarland and Rev. Ashwood. Interment at Northwood.
