Downar died at his home on West Steubenville avenue Monday, August 4th, 1902 at about 12 o'clock noon, aged 60 years, 1 month and 26 days. For a year or more past his health seemed to be gradually failing, but was not regarded as seriously ill till about seven weeks ago, he was forced to remain in the house and most of the time confined to his bed. His illness was a complication of diseases that baffled the skill of the ablest physicians. Dr. Downar was born in Cambridge June 8th, 1842 and this has been his home during life. August 17, 1878, he was united in marriage with Miss Sarah M. Shriver, two whom were born three children, namely; James, Mrs. Bessie Dervies of Wheeling, W.Va., and Gertrude who died in infancy. After completing his education, he became a druggist and was one of the best know and must skilled pharmacists in Ohio. He followed this occupation until failing health warned him to relinquish active employment. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Downar, both of whom are now deceased. Three brothers are living viz: William and Andrew, of Cambridge, and Newton and three sisters: Mrs. Mary McCoffery and Mrs. Carrie Harris, of Baltimore, Md., and Mrs. Thomas Cochran, of Bellaire, Ohio. Dr. Downar was a kind hearted generous man, exceedingly kind and indulgent to his family and amiable and gentle toward all his acquaintances. Funeral services will be held at the residence on Wednesday at 2:30 o'clock. He was a member of the I.O.O.F and B.P.O.E. and these fraternities will take part in the services.
