She was probably the oldest person in Guernsey County, having been born at Winchester, Virginia, in 1782, as near as can be a curtained. Her grandfather and her mother were slaves, but her father, a free man married her mother and redeemed her iron bondage. Her memory was faithful to within a few years of her death. Her accurate description of the scenes that came within her collection of contemporaneous events corroborate her statement as to her age. As far back as the memory of old men reaches Jane Ransom was an old women. She has two sons and one daughter living, and a large number dead. George Ransom is the barbering business at Bellaire and Louis is following the same vocation. Her daughter, Hannah, an old woman, lives in Washington.
