    1. [OHGUERNS] Marriage licenses vs. marriage records
    2. Dear list, I've seen postings yesterday/today regarding whether or not Guernsey County maintained marriage license records. I don't know. ...But....let me throw this into the mix for consideration. I'm not sure if Guernsey County has kept records of marriage licenses. They certainly have records of marriage dating back to the formation of the county. There is a difference between marriage licenses and marriage records. Marriage licenses were issued in some places, but appearantly, not all, and not consistently even where they were issued. And, not all marriage licenses which were issued were acted upon. .......e.g., John and Jane could obtain a marriage "license", then have a quarrel, and not actually get married. Their mariage license was recorded, ...but that doesn't mean they actually got married. So,....now, as genealogists, we have be be careful when looking at marriage licenses. Just because they got a marriage license, doesn't (in all cases) mean they followed through with it. (...This is probably only a small percentage of the cases that didn't follow through with the deed, ...but I think it's prudent to keep that in mind.) Concentrate on finding the marriage record. That sealed the deed. McCracken family of Cambridge descendant, Andy Miller, Columbus, Ohio
