I'm trying to piece together some possible connections between the families named above. If anyone can help unravel this, I'd appreciate your help! While my particular clan of BAY is that of Thomas Bay, Sr. who married Elizabeth Blackburn and who migrated from south of Winchester, VA to Cross Creek Twp., Washington County, PA to Spencer, Twp., Guernsey County and Cumberland, I've run across a number of other BAY names which seem to fit with another group, perhaps distantly related. The people are MARY BAY who married JOSEPH MULLIN (sometimes McUlin) on 17 Aug 1815 in Muskingum County. They had children according to IGI - JOSEPH MULLIN b 20 Feb 1822 in Zanesville and MARY JANE MULLIN b 20 Apr 1826 in Guernsey. According to IGI, the line is JOSEPH MULLIN m. TAMER A. PHILLIS who had son JOSEPH born 11 Mar 1786 in PA. He is the one who married MARY BAY in 1815. Joseph and Mary Bay Mullin had a son Joseph born in 1822 in Zanesbville and a daughter, listed as Mary "Catherine" b 14 May 1828 in Guernsey. She died in 1848 in Iowa County Iowa according to one source. Mary "Catherine" (don't know why it's listed that way) married John Nelson Smart and among their offspring is a TAMER ANN SMART. They evidently moved to Iowa after 1850. Then we have an 1848 marriage of THAMER ANN BAY to LEE OGAN in Guernsey. The unusal name of TAMER or THAMER makes me wonder if THAMER ANN BAY was daughter of a WILLIAM CAMPBELL BAY and ANNA WILSON who married in Guernsey in 1822. There was probably some connection between WILLIAM C. BAY and the PHILLIS family, particularly Joseph and Charles since William sold some land to those two and ended up in court after much controversy over the deal. Where the Wilsons come in is not certain but I've also found a John Phillis and wife Isabell Wilson who had a son, Joseph, b. about 1838 in Ohio. And J. W. and Prudence Marshall (who later married my Thomas Bay, Jr.) were grandparents of a Mary Phillis. I have a hunch that Mary Bay was sister of William Campbell Bay and of Catherine Bay Whitaker (Mrs. Peter Whitaker) and the three were children of Robert Bay and Ann Gibson, but this is only a hunch. The other couple in the mix are Joseph Bay and Catherine (Katharine) Derrick Bay, married in 1813 in Jefferson County, but ending up in Zanesville, Muskingum County. I have a feeling that these Bays, Phillis', Marshall's and perhaps Mullins all came from the northern part of Washington County, PA - Smith Twp or thereabouts.
