GOODEN.” [Transcribed 13 Feb 2001 from Bloomfield-Eastern Greene County Public Library’s IHS Microfilm Records.] Benton GOODEN was born in Guernsey County, Ohio, near Senecaville, September 22, 1848, and departed from this life Friday, May 11, 1917, at his home in Newark. He came to Greene County about 1867. He was united in marriage to Lavina GASTON, September 21, 1873. No children were born to this union. Jennie GRIMES, now wife of J. D. NASH, of Balleyville, Kansas, made her home with the deceased and wife from childhood until her marriage. The home of Benton GOODEN and wife was known for its generous hospitality. Their kindness and help to any sick or needy of the vicinity will not be forgotten. “In as much as ye have done it to the least of these ye have done it to me.” His wife departed from this life May 31, 1902. Mr. GOODEN was the youngest of a family of nine children—five sisters and four brothers—born to William and Tamar GOODEN. Of this family, one brother and four sisters are now living. Benton GOODEN was a charter member of the Knights of Pythias Lodge No. 270, of Newark. The funeral was held in the M. E. church at Newark, in charge of the K. of P. brothers. — We desire to thank the friends and neighbors and the members of the K. of P. lodge for their kindness and help in the last sickness and death of our beloved foster father and grandfather, Benton GOODEN.
