January 2001 Mary Ruth Calvert, 85, of Cambridge, died Sunday (Jan. 7, 2001) at Southeastern Ohio Regional Medical Center. She was born Sept. 6, 1915, in Pleasant City, daughter of the late Dwight and Cleo (Larrick) Bates. Mrs. Calvert had worked for the telephone company and for Dr. Swan as a receptionist. She gave organ lessons. She was a member of Mt. Zion Lutheran Church. She was a graduate of the former Brown High School and attended Columbus Business College. She was preceded in death by a brother, Donald L. Bates. She leaves her husband, Thomas A. Calvert, whom she married Nov. 24, 1937; a niece, Mrs. George (Connie) Hawthorne of Cambridge; two nephews, John (Barb) Bates of Cambridge and Tom (Linda) Bates of Florida; four sisters-in-law, Betty Bates, Pat Goodwin, Mildred Calvert and Ruth Calvert, all of Cambridge. Friends may call from noon to 2 p.m. today at Thorn-Black Funeral Home, Cambridge, with services to follow at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Diana Gugel officiating. Burial will be in Northwood Cemetery.
