    3. Gerald: Not sure what period you're talking about but there does appear to be one connection, at least via the Lawrence family, who are connected to the Bell's. The first one I find is Index Guernsey Co Marriages 1879-1885 (Book III, pg 308) Groom: Orr, E. C. Bride: Lawrence Adda A. Here's a site that may help you: http://bettyshinn.com/ which has many of the vital records indexed. Happy Hunting! Elizabeth

    3. I noticed in the pension records for my Civil War ancestor Isaac B. Finney, of Tuscarawas, that his wife Rachel Orr had hired an attorney from Guernsey County to help her file her pension records. I am curious as to why Rachel did not hire someone from the county that she lived in? Why would she travel to a neighboring county? Rachel lived in Gilmore which is at the southern end of the county so perhaps it was closer to go another county? I think the attorney she hired, Edward Bell was in Cambridge and I have not checked mapquest yet to see if Cambrigde is closer to Gilmore than New Philadelphia or Uhricsville. Perhaps she chose Edward Bell due to a family connection? I was told once years ago by someone who thought Isaac's middle initial B. stood for Bell as there was some Finney's somewhere that connected with the Bell family somewhere in Ohio but I could never make a connection or confirm this information. If anyone has ever heard of any Finney/Bell or Bell/Orr connections, I would very much like to correspond with you. Many thanks again. Gerald Finney

    3. Hi, It's far more likely that your Finneys came from further east, e.g. Pennsylvania, or Maryland as your Orr family did. Or, they might have been immigrants, probably from Ireland, who came ashore and quickly went on to Ohio. There was, however, some migration out of Guernsey County at this time (~1830), as it was on the National Road and so something of a beachhead into Ohio in the first quarter of the century. If you search the Guernsey County Genweb site, you'll also find a number of Finneys (John, Mary, Andrew, and Thomas ) listed in "Portrait and Biographical Record" and in the census records: http://www.usgennet.org/search/oh.html Have you done any census research on them, yet? For example, are they the right age to be Isaac's parent, and do they have any children in the age range of your Isaac in the 1840 census? Have you found Isaac on the 1850 census? This is the first to list occupation, so you might find some other Finneys that are carpenters, and they might be relatives. If you haven't already, join the Finney surname mailing list as it's the easiest way to connect with Finneys in diverse locations. P.S. Watch out for incorrect spellings and transcriptions from the Census. For example, what may look like a "Z" on census records is probably an "L", i.e. "Zincoln" is almost certainly "Lincoln". 1. [OHGUERNS] Finney's of Ohio
    2. gfinney
    3. Greetings, I am looking to come into contact and exchange genealogy information with anyone that is researching the Finney surname. I have been researching my Coshocton/Tuscarawas County Finney ancestor for 14 years now and I have not been able to locate the name of his parents. At the end of August I will be taking the trip from California to Ohio, for one short week, in the hopes of finding some more detailed information on my ancestors from Ohio. I will be the first person in my family line to return to Ohio since my Great Grandfather left for Missouri sometime between 1880 and 1889. It is my hopes that by posting this message in the neighboring counties of Tuscarawas and Coshocton Counties that I may find someone who is researching the same Finney line that I am. I cannot find the parents of my Civil War Veteran ancestor nor do I know if he has any siblings. I have not even been able to figure out his middle name from the middle initial that I have. I will post some information on my ancestor in the hopes that his name appear in the research of one of your list members. Thank you in advance for anyone that can assist me. Isaac B. Finney was born in or about the year of 1830 or 1831. This is an estimated date as I have no actual documentation to his actual date of birth. His death record shows his age as 43 years, 3 months, and 24 days of age at the time of his death on March 14, 1874. When Isaac enlisted in the Civil War on September 11, 1861 he stated that he was 29 years of age. On September 11, 1853, Isaac B. Finney married Rachel Orr. Rachel was the daughter of William Orr and Ann Perkins of Perry Township, Tuscarawas County, Ohio. William Orr was from Maryland and was a veteran of the War of 1812. Ann Perkins was born in Virginia. The marriage was conducted by Clark Conwell, Esquire, at the home of William and Ann Orr. Isaac B. Finney was a carpenter. I do not know if this was a trade taught to him by his father or if it was a trade he learned from someone else. Isaac and Rachel had 10 surviving children, if the information on the death certificates for the two older children are correct then they were born in Washington Township near Gilmore in 1853 and 1859. Isaac is found in census records as living in Coshocton County in 1860 and 1870 and his Civil War pension records states that Isaac and Rachel moved back to Tuscarawas in Washington Township, near Gilmore in late 1870. One of their children , Josephine, stayed behind in Coshocton County due to an illness and lived in the home of Mary Zincoln. Children's names: William Finney - Died at a young age Hannah Finney - Died at a young age George Washington Finney - Married Minnie Dempster, lived in Columbus. Robert Ellsworth Finney - Married Irma Herrick Kezia Ann Finney - Married Leonard Kail Isaac Marshel Finney - Unknown if married. Last found in 1880 census in Centerville, Indiana Ozias S. Finney - Married Hester Mitchell and Prudence Murphy, both in Indiana. Josephine Finney - Remained in Coshocton Co. when Finney family moved back to Tuscarawas in 1870 Josephus Finney - Married unknown and lived in Steubenville in 1910. Josephine and Josephus were twins. Lewellis Pendleton Finney - Married Mary Borders and Georgia Ann Miles, 1890 and 1893 in Missouri. Mary E. Finney - Married Jacob Miller and then later someone named Williams. Lillie Dale Finney - Married Ed Fowler Isaac and Rachel are listed on page 182 of the Tuscarawas County Cemetery listing and are in Volume 6 of the Tuscarawas County Cemetery Inscriptions. They are both shown as being buried in West Union Cemetery near the town of Gilmore.

He was born around 1815 in PA and died in 1891 in Newark, OH. He was married to my ancestor Mary Elizabeth Campbell and the census shows them living on a farm in Wills Twp in 1850. I was hoping for an obit or anything that might give me more information. I also found a reference that said "his remains were brought to Gibson's and buried beside his first wife (my ancestor) on the farm he once owned." Author: johncook790 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.ohio.counties.guernsey/4400.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: David: Here's a little more data: 1830 Census data, Spencer Twp, for Nathan West household shows: Male, 10-15: 1 (?) Male, 30-40: 1 (Nathan) Female, under 5: 3 Female, 5-10: 1 Female, 10-15: 1 Female, 30-40: 1 (Mary or?) For 1820, there are a couple of alternatives: 1820 Census data, Muskingum County, Ohio for Nathan West household Male, under 10: 1 Male, 18-26: 1 Female, under 10: 1 Female, 16-18: 1 OR 1820 Census data, Harrison County VA for Nathan West household Male, under 10: 2 Male, 10-16: 2 Male, 16-18: 1 Male, 18-26: 1 Male, 26-45: 1 (Nathan) Female, under 10: 2 Female, 18-26: 1 (Mary) This enumeration indicates that 4 members of the household are identified as "Foreigners not Naturalized". But, given the consistency of the data, I believe that the enumerator was counting those "Engaged in Agriculture". Given the composition of the household (number of people by age group), the Harrison County family seems the more likely. And, there is a marriage for Nathan West and Sarah Davisson, Harrison Co VA dated 04 Jan 1803. She could be Rebecca's mother (maybe). Given Rebecca's age in 1850 (and Sarah Godfrey's ditto) I would guess that Mary is not their mother, and might be Nathan's 2nd wife, or even his third. Suggest you ask the Guernsey Co Gen Soc for info on any/all West marriages and for cemetery look-up's ditto. Or, contact Genealogical section librarian (Shirley) of the Guernsey Co Library, who will also help (fordsh@oplin.org). That's about all I have time to contribute to your search. Happy Hunting.
