My maternal ggrandfather's brother, Pat SLAYMAN, passsed away on June 20, 1886 in Cambridge. I'm searching for an obit for him. Was there a paper in Cambridge, or Guernsey County at that particular time? Joe Burt
Yes, the newspaper of the era is the The Cambridge Jeffersonian . And, there are deaths recorded for members of the Slayman family in the County Death Records, all in Book Two: Slayman, Margaret, pg 66 Slayman, Michael, pg 109 Slayman, Patrick, pg 9 This info available due to the work of Betty Stillion Shinn, http://bettyshinn.com/Default.aspx It's possible to get obit look-ups by the Guernsey County Library's Genealogy Librarian, at <fordsh@oplin.org> Happy hunting! Terry: Reading your obituary transcriptions is really great. I know that they get posted to the RootsWeb archive, but wonder why you're not also submitting them to the Guernsey County GenWeb site, as well. The link is http://www.usgennet.org/usa/oh/county/guernsey/obits/ Seems to me it would be a lot easier for someone searching Guernsey Co families to look them up there. Thanks for your hard work! The date range is 1800-1830. He was supposedly born in Ohio in 1801, Anna in Virginia in 1804. They settled in 1826, having moved to Wills Creek, Thompson's Riffle from eastern Virginia. All from Sarchet's Biography of Guernsey County, Ohio and a DAR application. Such as it is, this is all I have. Thank you - whatever happens. I couldn't find anything at all on any of them. I searched the entire states (Ohio/Virginia) and all names you gave (her married and maiden names, her dad and her hubby) covering all dates. I'd suggest joining here http://groups.msn.com/CambridgeJeffersonian1878-1906 (those are no longer the only dates they'll search) and asking the owners to do a more in depth search. newspaperarchive doesn't have all papers. The group also (I think) has access to other document types. An old transcription of the grave stones in Cumberland Cemetery shows the grave of MARGARET STEVENS, 1763-1859. It is apparently close to the grave of her daughter, SUSANNAH STRAHL. I visited this cemetery about 10 years ago, but could not find the Margaret Stevens marker though a big thunderstorm struck about half way through my search and I had to give up. The grave marker may have fallen down to become illegible since 1963 when the markers were transcribed? Nevertheless, if anyone who follows this list should happen to visit Cumberland Cemetery could they keep an eye out for Margaret? It would be much appreciated.
